“Amazing hotel, warning about the stairs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2012

Afitos itself is on a cliff, so getting down to the sea and back up at the end of the day is an effort. But the hotel itself is amazing for the price, you definitely get your money's worth. I went with a friend for a holiday and it was perfect as Kalithea (the largest town of halkidiki) was only a short cab ride away, and we could go to loads of great restaurants, bars, and clubs. Definitely go and enjoy this beautiful hotel and location.

The blue bay hotel is a beautiful hotel, about a 10 minute walk to a town called afitos. The location wasn't exactly perfect as the 10 minute walk was down a back street which was fairly quiet but not lit up atall at night. The beach was a 5 minute walk down some STEEP steps. and probably a 10 minute walk back up (most of this is shaded but still quite a work out). I've been to many hotels in Greece, and this was exceptionally clean and a very good room. The aircon was great and the room was cleaned most days. The staff are mostly friendly minus a few, but they were always happy to help. The only thing that wasn't very good was the food. I'm not a fussy eater but the food was to an average standard and pretty basic. Overall, I would definitely go again and I would recommend it to couples or families.

The hotel is pretty low key, there is no evening entertainment (thank God) which makes for a nice quite relaxing atmosphere, there is piped music in the reception and restaurant but unfortunately they play the same 2 CDs over and over again. During the day there is a beach bar below the hotel and they play loud bass heavy music most of the day which is pretty intrusive considering the hotel and grounds itself are nice and quiet.

The grounds and pools are very well maintained as is the reception and general areas, most of the sun loungers at the larger pool were "death traps" but on our last day someone had started to repair them, hopefully that would sort the issues out. even when the hotel was full we never has an issue getting a couple of sun loungers, there were of course the odd Italian couple who thought they were better than other folk who put towels down hours before they used the sun beds but by and large this was not the norm, it would have been better if the smaller pool and area would have been adults only, there were a few children in the small pool shrieking etc (as kids do) but that is not what I come away for, and specifically chose this hotel because of the lack of support for kids!

There are quite a number of Wasps around the edges of the pool, but they did not cause any issues that I was aware of, we did see some 3 wasps nests during our stay, but again no real issue with them.

Our room was one that had been refurbished and had a great view of the small pool and sea, unfortunately it was not really up to spec: The house keeping was first rate, but the screen door was ripped so we could not leave the balcony down on vent in case insects got in at night (and there are a few large one lurking about), during the first 5 days we tried to take a shower after 17:00 and often got tepid/room temperature water, after having complained 3 times to reception it was finally sorted. There was a deflector missing from our AC unit so we ended up having to put a blanket on our bed at night as the cold air was blown directly onto us, but it was far too hot not to use the AC with some daytime temps reaching 41c and most days were 37c+ but the AC could not be left on in the room as once the key card was removed power would be shout off shortly after. The fridge worked fine and we managed to stock it well with large bottles of water. Some of the power sockets were loose and when pulling our adapter out one 2 of them they started to come out of the wall as well. The room lighting was very low key with no overhead light in the main area that you could turn on at night to light the room properly. The bed was very firm (too firm for us) as were the pillows but the helpful reception staff sorted us some pillows to our liking. The balcony was excellent with a pull out clothes maiden to dry swim things etc.

The food for us was probably the biggest disappointment, we took the half board option and thought that Breakfast was particularly poor with no toast option as well as fried eggs that were completely dried out, if you liked cold meats and cheese then I guess you would be OK but none of the food was covered and there were a number of flies hovering around the food not to mention some people who sneezed in the food area, not very pleasant! The views from the restaurant were fantastic as it overlooked the bay directly with no real obstructions. Evening meals were a little better with extensive use of Pork each evening, at least they appears to have a 14 days menu so they would be something different each night but on a number of occasions we saw food that had been served up at breakfast mixed with something else and served up as a dish in the evening! All in all the buffet breakfast were very poor and the evening buffet meal adequately average, with better choice but with food still uncovered and overall poor selection. We did eat out one evening in Afitos and had a really excellent meal, and spent a couple of nights in town at a cocktail bar that was fab and well worth a visit. An evening meal for 2 will set you back around 30 Euros for 2 courses and very modest drinks. The walk to the town would take 15 mins max and although not well lit it was perfectly useable and the street lighting that was present.

I used the onsite gym and found it to be OK, there is a selection of equipment that looks fairly new and the weight machine and tread mill both worked fine, the off duty staff do use it as well and it would also appear that the waiters live on site in one or 2 of the rooms near the Gym.

So in conclusion I would say it was a 4 start hotel but it could do better, most certainly on the food front and perhaps with a little better maintenance in/on the rooms, but overall I would stay again but get a discount by not having anything to eat and go to Afitos to eat instead.

We was there from 30.06.2012 to 08.07.2012 - in Junior Suite - 2 children + 2 parents, on HB.
The room - big enough! The room was very very very clean!!!
Sheets was replaced on every 2 days.
Staff was very professional, kind, spooking English, German and Greek (off course).
The Pool - very clean!
I was impresed by covered parking.
Restourant -amazing view - but it is very hot on the morings if you chose a table next to windows. The food I will say - between Good and Very Good, more close to Good. There are Everything for Evereone.
The Beache - We were with car and we prefer to visit diferent beaches and if you chose the nearest beach - it will take 2 min to go there by car - free parking places, very good sea , bar and staff (The beach Bar is not part of the Hotel ).
The village - we love this village - it is traditional Greek village and you will feel the traditional greek atmosphere, you shoud visit Hristos taverna.

Just back from a week at the Blue Bay Afitos. Wow we loved it and yes many of the guests were German and I have to say most were very unfriendly, Why????. That didnt spoil the week for us. Food and accommodation excellent, staff very helpful and obliging, couldnt do enough to make our stay a good one.

I think you would call this hotel adult themed, which really suited us. Peace and quiet and a couple of lovely little towns just a 10 minute walk away. Everything you want there, food drinks and gifts the lot and nightlife if you want it.

Cant wait to go back, already checking out prices

Room Tip: Push the boat out and have a suite, they looked fab

Stayed half board for 2 weeks at the start of July. The web site for the hotel is accurate - views are stunning, hotel is kept very clean and common areas are well maintained.
Hotel is very popular with German people and we got the impression it was geared towards them - even some of the staff are German. Food was only OK - breakfast was good, a large selection of meats, cheeses, breads, cakes, fruit, yogurt (greek yogurt with honey is really good), all the usual things. Dinner is also buffet and while there was a variety of dishes at night, I don't think a night went by when pork wasn't on the menu. We weren't impressed with dinner overall. Everything seemed to be stewed or casseroled! very little fish on offer.

One of my biggest problems with the dining room was water stains on cutlery and glass ware - I felt like it showed a real lack of effort and while its a little thing, it would have been nice to get a clear glass with our bottle of wine at night.

The bar is very quiet at night - only a hand full of people tend to stick around. It can be difficult to get served as bar staff help to set up the dining room at night for breakfast and so are in and out to the bar very sporadically. I don't mean to sound like the impatient type, we have been to Italy two years previous to this holiday and we know what laid back service is, but this was very irritating. The bar is extremely dark at night as well - they really could do with improving the lighting.

The steps to the beach while maybe a little much for the frail or very young, are not difficult to walk, they are not very steep and there are sitting areas along the way if you need to stop. The beach is nice but beds are very cramped so we didn't go there too much. Nice for an evening swim though.

Afitos is a very small town and not as atmospheric as it is described in some places. We did go to Christos restaurant after reading reviews here and its worth a visit. The road from the hotel is OK for walking, its takes about 15 minutes max. Gets very dark though and I didn't really walking back from town when its was so dark - felt a little unsafe.

Overall we wouldn't recommend this hotel to friends or family. It was only so so. We had a very relaxing holiday but it did take us a few days to get used to the hotel and the things that fell short of the mark. We won't be going back.
