The Theoxenia’s location, on the cliffs behind the famous windmills, is a strong selling point. Most of the rooms have a sea view and the ‘sea front’ rooms with balconies overlooking the cliff path are even better. As this was low season we were lucky enough to be up-graded to one of these. They are designed in typical Cycladic blue/white (as is the whole building), not unduly spacious, but ours had a bath with separate shower, a small seating area, mini-bar and satellite flat screen TV. Pillows were soft and the bed was ‘firm’ – this is not a criticism, just a fact, and factual descriptions fail to do justice to this place. The whole atmosphere is special, and the level of hospitality from the charming staff is superb. Generous policies such as free transfers both from and to the airport or port, the welcome drink at the bar, the bottle of wine and fresh fruit on arrival and the almost over-elaborate breakfast buffet (usually included in the room rate) – all this makes you feel you must be staying in the most hospitable hotel on the island. Only the greedy mini-bar prices spoil this illusion of generosity. Would you believe 3.50 Euros for a 50 cent bottle of water? That’s a 700 per cent mark up! (Don’t get me started on mini-bar prices. Why don’t hoteliers realise that by charging reasonable prices they would make a reasonable profit? Instead, they charge rip-off prices, so we go to the supermarket and they make nothing.)
OK, rant over. With this one exception, the Theoxenia ticks all the right boxes. The swimming pool is beautifully designed, surrounded not only by loungers but shady, four-poster beds. It is an oasis of calm, but only five minutes from the bustle of Little Venice and some of the best eateries in town. But please do walk 10 minutes in the opposite direction along the cliff path to Joanna's Nikos Place for some of the best taverna food on the island. You will not regret it, nor will you regret choosing this near-perfect hotel. Just don’t use the mini-bar!
