“What a view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2008

Large comfortable and clean double room and bathroom. Huge verandah and pool. Staff were friendly and helpful. Magnificent view over Mykonos and close to the little village of windy roads. Steep walk up the hill but lovely stay - highly recommended.

  • Liked — The accommodation and the view
  • Disliked — The steep walk up the hill but it only takes about 5 minutes - pleasant if not in the sun!

Stayed at the Alkyon a few years back, so can't comment on any recent changes. However, we were very happy with it. We booked via Respect (a gay holiday company) and took one of the double rooms round the side. The room was spacious, spotlessly clean and had a little kitchenette area on the side which was quite handy, as well as a pleasant shower room. The air conditioning worked very well - a blessing in Mykonos in a hot September!

Previous reviews rightly point out that it isn't a first class luxury hotel and it is on a steep hill - so if these things put you off, then maybe another choice would be better for you. I also wasn't massively impressed with the breakfasts. But I would still recommend the Alkyon partly for its views and partly for the very pleasant rooms. Next time I'm going back there.

BTW Mykonos is NOT tacky despite what some reviewers have said - but I would strongly recommend avoiding the peak summer season if you don't want to be drowned in the partying crowds. May and September are good times to go if you can.

For those that want a good value hotel with fantastic, breathtaking views, the Alkyon is by far the best hotel on the island.
It is not luxiourous- but then who goes to Greece to stay INSIDE?

For those that complain about the walk- they haven't found the short cut. Rather than walk down the road into town, there is a STEEP footpath the runs alongside the hotel straight down into town. You come out next to some of the best restaurants in town. This is a 5-10 minute safe walk, 15-20 minute stagger back at night!

The hotel has a number of "blocks". The very first block is situated right next to the main road into town: this can be noisey. Better to ask for a room down by the pool or above the main reception area.

We've been 4 times now. Having stayed around the world, our memories of watching the sunset from our terrace and see the twinkling lights of Mykonos Town come on are as vivid today as they were then.

Go!!

Our room was extremely large and we enjoyed our stay here. The pool view is fantastic and the view from the room was fantastic. The main problems entailed paying, suppossedly the credit card machine was broken for 4 days and we had to pay mostly in cash. That is difficult for people who stay a significant amount of days. The walk up the hill is tough, but after eating the Minocan food you can burn it off, and they tell you when you book it that it is at the top of the hill.

This is a great hotel with stunning views. The downside to that is of course it is up a hill but then you are told that when you book. the staff are wonderful and the rooms typically Greek and well furnished in clean surroundings. The pool is lovely with a panoramic view of the whole of Mykonos island and beyond to Delos. Loved it, we are heading back there.

Yes - Alkyon is on a steep hill overlooking Mykonos Town. Yes - the accommodations are basic but comfortable.

So rent a scooter and spend your time out of the room and alongside Alkyons large and enjoyable pool overlooking the town and the beautiful daily sunsets.

June 07 was our second stay at Alkyon and we will certainly do it again. It is not a pricey hotel - especially if you book direct but we went through Matt Holidays and paid €75 per night - a steal in Mykonos. The rooms are basic but comfortable enough with a refridgerator, desk, dryer, and basic bathroom with bath/shower. It is not the Ritz and not intended to be. It's gems come from a great pool, friendly and attentive staff, and wonderful views. Most of the rooms have their own verandas to enjoy the sunsets on your own.

If you are looking for a full service hotel - then this is not it. If you are looking for a comfortable holiday on a budget, then this is it. From its location you can easily access all of the famous beaches of Mykonos (although you will need to rent a scooter, ATV or a car). I would not suggest walking up and down the hill on a daily basis...but this is part of the reason why it is not as expensive as others.

  • Liked — The large pool with great views!
  • Disliked — Rooms are probably 2-star accommodation
