I was in Germany at the time when my then boyfriend and I booked a trip to Mykonos to get away from Germany... We got a fabulous deal from Opodo. After taking a taxi from the airport to the hotel (it only cost a few euros) we checked in and was given our room. The bathroom was super small (as with most European hotels) and we later found dead bugs all in our room.
By just laying on the bed, it would collapse. In the middle of the night, we would have to get up and fix the support boards underneath the very stiff mattress.
The windows/shutters in the hotel do not have screens. I was disappointed that our "sea view" was blocked because we could not open our shutters completely because somebody installed a light post which obstructed the shutter from opening. The front desk would not switch our rooms even after several attempts.
At least the place does have air conditioning. HOWEVER, at check-in they only give you one key. In order for the air conditioning and other electrical applicances to run, your room key must be inserted into a slot and REMAIN THERE. When you leave you're room, say "bye bye" to the air conditioner and expect a hot and muggy room to come back to.
We figured we would "outsmart" the system by requesting another key at the front desk to keep inserted into the slot to keep the a/c running while we were out. Whenever the maid serviced the room, he or she would remove the key anyway and put it on the desk, shutting off the power. Good job.
The TV in the room is about nine inches wide.
The pool is another thing. I jumped right on it and couldn't figure out what was "different" about it. After my eyes and skin started burning, I realized that it was a salt water pool.
I think I remember the hotel featuring a free breakfast. Skip it, it's not worth getting up early to get a slice of salty ham and a piece of toast.
Rent a ATV / 4 Wheeler to cruise along the island. It is definitely worth it. I think it was about 15 Euros a day or so... We were able to fit on one, however I really don't recommend it for two men. Everytime there would be a steep hill (ie driving to Paradise beach and many others) one of us would have to hop off and walk since the ATV didnt have enough "power" to get us both up the hill together.
The ATV is the best way to get from the hotel to the downtown area (and the beaches) safely and quickly. Trust me, walking late at night is not fun and you do run the risk of getting squished. That's the primary reason we got the ATV in the first place.
To go to the beaches you can either take a taxi (too expensive), take the bus (cheaper but takes a while), or the atv (quick, and costs less than two bus rides a day)
REMEMBER WHERE THE GAS STATION IS!!!
There is a free shuttle from the hotel back to the airport. When my boyfriend and I tried to bored, the driver said he only had me on the list. Not that it mattered anyway since the shuttle was EMPTY he made a big deal out of it and went and talked to the front desk. After that it was ok.
The airport is a joke. You dont have to get there too early. Remember to hit up the duty free after you land and before you leave for cheap bottles of liquor.
Overall, Mykonos itself is a GREAT party place for same sex couples and offers breath taking scenery, beaches, and nightlife. Just choose a better hotel.
