We have just arried back from a 2 week stay at the Isla Bonita and I'm afraid we would never recommend it to our friends or EVER go back! I really hate to be so negative, but I think it's best to be truthful about our experience here. I hate moaning but on this occasion, i'm not going to hold back.
We are a couple in our 30's with 2 children aged 6 + 7, and I must admit we were very dissapointed with this hotel, BUT PLEASE READ ON TO FIND OUT WHY...... Before I booked it, I read these reviews on Trip Advisor and wasn't worried at all about the odd bad review, especially when most of the bad reviews were from older couples without children,(as you can't please everyone) and as we are quite laid back and easy going, we decided to give it a go. Well I really do wish we hadn't.
The hotel is made up of 2 blocks, A and B. We weren't told when we checked in but the hotel was only 40% full, so they decided to close one side of the hotel down completley, block B. This meant that only half of the facilities that we were expecting were open. In block B the largest and deepest pool and the largest kiddy pool were drained, and the pool bar was closed. The large play room with football tables, snooker tables, slides, go karts, play houses etc was also closed. There was a chill out bar with plasma tv with an adjacent room off it, with computers and a soft play area with ball pit for the kids, but again closed. Just outside here was a childrens area with trampoline, see saw and pool table, but again all closed . (Everything was freshly painted and there was always a workman or two, repairing or maintaining something, so when they re-open that side it will be very nice) We booked this hotel purely for the pools (as we like to be pool based for the kids) and the childrens ammenities. We were hacked off to say the least but decided not to let it get to us, there was nothing we could do about it, so decided to make use of the other facilities and pool available to us. The life guards were are always changing their minds wether you could use lilos or inflatables in the pool. One day it was a no no and even babies in inflatable seats were removed from the pool but on other days the kids and adults would be happily lazing or playing on them. When we asked at the reception they said it was because some of the older guests were complaining that they were getting splashed whilst sunbathing! Im sorry but there was plenty of room around the pool, away from the splash zone, and anyway, its a family hotel. Did they expect the kids to just sit on the edge of the pool? The children had just as much right to enjoy the pool as much as the adults. If both pools were open they could have had one for inflatables etc and the other for swimmers, but they wouldn't................
They closed the 4 jacuzzi's, 4 days into our holiday and when i complained about it they said it was becaues it was low season and they wanted to refurb it for July. It didn't seem to bother them that they were busy all the time and a popular facility.
THE FOOD
The food was bad!! It was always luke warm or cold and it wasn't replenished very quickly. We lost count the amount of times we had to ask for things to be re filled. One critisisum I will point out and think is a hazard is that when they replenish the hot food, eg chicken curry, they dont change the serving dish and pour the new stuff on top of the old. You were never quite sure how long the stuff on the bottom had been in there. Also they used to cook the next batch of food and it would often sit on the side for a while before it was dished up. Many a time it would be put under the grill to be re heated before they dished it up again. Im really surprised none of us were ill! They have alot of fish and chicken dishes but if you're not a lover of them then I'm afraid you'll go hungry. They had a different themed night in the buffet restaurant, chineese, canarian, mexican, but to be honest it was all the same things every night. You'd get spring rolls and prawn crackers extra for chineese night and tortillas with a dip for the mexican night. On the whole, we ate out 7 of the 14 nights we were there.
The BBQ resturant was waiter served which we thought would be a nice change, but it was very slow the night we went. You didn't have a choice, it was a set meal. With soup to start. Main was canarian potatoes, salad and a piece of chicken, steak and pork. It was a nice change to have hot food straight from the griddle, but because our children dont eat meat and hated the canarian potatoes we didnt stop for the dessert because we had to rush back to the buffet resturant to feed them. We never went back again!
ENTERTAINMENT
The only critisism is that they needed a bigger budget for their shows. Every 3 or 4 days you'd get a professionl show put on but the rest of the time it was down to Ruby (very funny) Matty, Paula and forgot her name, to do their own entertainment, which always consisted of them using people from the audience, who in time were made to look like utter twits! It was that bad you had to laugh, but not really what we expected from a 4* hotel.
There were some positive points of our stay.
1) The rooms are very clean. We had maid service every day and clean towels daily, if required. The maids were very pleasant and would always come back to clean, if you were in. In some hotels we've been to in the past, the maids would clean around you rather than come back later.
2) There were fresh pool towels available every day too which was good.
3) Breakfast was the best meal of the day, very varied with fruit, cereal,,hot and cold choices and continental. And the deserts on the evening were lovely, with a good selection.
4) Plenty of sunbeds around the pool and always a sunny or shaded spot, depending on what you wanted.( but it was only 30 - 40% full, what it would be in high season, I dont know)
5) The hotel run kids club was mainly run by Paula, and our kids enjoyed it. You signed them in and out, and Paula always took your room no, phone no amd where you'd be, (just in case they were upset or for an emergency) which was good.
She didn't always follow the timetable eg. footy at 11 etc, but to be honest, she chose activities which the majority of the kids wanted to do. One day our son turned up for the footy, but he was the only boy there and the girls didn't want to play, so they painted instead
6) The entertainment team were lovely and pleasant. There were 2 men and 2 women. The daytime activities seemed good. They had something going on every hour for the over 12's, from rifle shooting, archery , basket ball, water polo, to name a few.
7) The staff were generally very pleasant and polite, unless you had a complaint or dare for the food to be topped up, then they'd turn very arrogant .
BUT AFTER ALL THIS ................ In the hight of season, when all of the hotel is open and all facilities are open, I think it will be good value for money. BUT only a 3* NOT 4*. The rooms are tired and could do with decorating but you're never in there for long. Hopefully, the food won't be a problem because as more people are there, the food wont have time to go cold as it should fly out the dishes. Entertainment, well I just hope they have a bigger budget for that in peak season.
The hotel is nicely situated, close to beach and the promenade where pubs and resturants are situated, and if all else fails, The Princess hotels just rount the corner, to the left of the hotel has brilliant entertainment and allow non residents in. From fantastic majic shows to Acrobats, well worth the price of a few drinks.
If you're a family with under 12's I wouldn't recomment it AT THE MOMENT, while half of it is shut, but in the height of the season, I think it would be fab for families, but no so much for the older couples without kids. Spend a little more and head off to an Iberostar or Princess Hotel. You'll get the quality surroundings and service you'd expect for a 4* hotel.
Again this is only our point of view and I'm sure they'll be people that will disagree with us, but it was far from what we'd expected, and paid for.
