My partner and I have just returned from a lovely 11 night stay at the Bahia Princess which we booked through Thomson as a 5* Platinum hotel (please note however that the hotel's official rating is 4*) on a half board basis.
Having looked at these reviews before booking I thought it only right to put a review on which may help someone else in choosing their holiday as we all work so hard to get that break in the sun and want it to meet our expectations.
Due to the flight times arriving 21:30 and departing 21:15 we pre-booked a late check out and given our curiosity ended up having to pay to pre-book seats on the plane as the majority of people had already done this and it was the only way to guarantee we would be sitting together, so please when you get access to the "My Thomson" site check your plane.
Having read reviews on here in regards to room locations and the noise of the main road I both put a room request through for a pool and sea view room both via Thompson and I also emailed the hotel directly with my request. I had no complaints whatsoever upon check in as we were given a lovely room (241) which over looked the pools and also had a view of the sea given its location on the right hand side of the hotel. It did also have a balcony to the road which was a little noisy during the night but did not in anyway disturb our sleep.
The room itself was very large, nicely decorated and was exceptionally clean. The standard of cleanliness of the room was maintained for the duration of our stay so no complaints there. They do say you aren't allowed to use electrical items in your rooms except hairdryers and shavers but I am sure like many others we disobeyed this rule as our camera battery, ipods needed charging during the holiday and what girl can live without her straighteners these days. Though available plugs are limited, one in the bathroom and we had one other accessible in the room itself.
Upon our first morning we made our way to the restaurant for breakfast which took you through main reception and out the back past the Piano Bar to the main outside area where you had to walk past the two smaller pools down a 52 step flight of stairs to the main pool area where the restaurant was situated behind the main pool. Given our age these stairs did not cause us massive problems during the holiday and there are ramps and lifts but I just want people to be aware there are a lot of stairs on the main thoroughfair.
Breakfast was always plentiful and there was a massive selection from cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurt, cold meats and cheeses, breads, pastries, freshly cooked crepes and omelettes and the traditional English cooked breakfast.
On to the pool areas, there are 3 pools, 2 smaller pools either side of the Piano Bar with a sufficient number of sunbeds, however these two pools remained shaded by the hotel building till around lunchtime so were always that bit cooler not having the benefit of the sun for the whole day. The main pool as mentioned above was down the large staircase and again had as many sunbeds around it as they could get in and was warmed by the sun from around 10:30am so was the warmest. There were several other terrace areas with additional sunbeds for the full compliment of guests. Be warned in typical holiday style if you want a sunbed by any of the pools you have to get your towels on to the beds by 7:30am! So no lie in's on this holiday! If your not bothered about being by the pools there were always beds available on the terraces.
All of the hotel areas, reception, pool areas, bars, restaurant were exceptionally clean, with all hotel staff being exceptionally friendly and helpful. They could not do enough for you.
You were always able to get served at the various bars for drinks and the variety was good, as you can imagine drinks were not the cheapest in Costa Adeje but that is to be expected. You must take advantage of the daily cocktail special which is at a reduced price and for the kids (or big kids like me) you must try a milkshake from the Coco Loco bar yummy!
The only real disappointment for us was dinner, whilst you could say there was a lot of things to pick from the variety of the dishes didn't really change very much. I appreciate the hotel has to cater for alot of people and a variety of tastes but it all just seemed to lack imagination being very much the same day to day, having paid half board we ate out one night just for a change and probably would have done so more if it wasn't the principle of the fact that we'd already paid for dinner and our spending money was meant to be for seeing Tenerife not buying dinner. There were no obvious themed dinners which would have given the opportunity for a bit of a change though one night the waiting on staff donned a costume of sorts but the food wasn't obviously different from any other night. In my opinion it was 3* standard buffet food not we expected from Thomson 5* Platinum.
Other than that we had a fabulous holiday at the hotel and would definitely stay in a Princess Hotel again (maybe only bed and breakfast though).
On the excursions front shop around with the various excursion places in the area, trips are considerably more expensive from the Thomson Reps, with us saving anything from 5-15 euro's each.
If you can you must go to Loro Park to see the vast variety of wildlife from Orca Whales, Dolphins, Sea Lions, Birds galore, Otters, Penguins, it was fab! However the best dolphin show I have ever seen was at Aqualand and the Dolphin experience was amazing being able to stroke the dolphins and get them to do tricks. Don't do Siam Park unless you want to queue for an hour to an hour and a half per water slide ride. Whale watching on a boat trip is a must we saw up to 20 pilot whales, just swimming around in the sea, amazing! The Medievil night was good for a laugh, though I swear our knight was in training but very handsome.
Anyway thank you to the Bahia Princess for making our holiday so wonderful, even though the food could have been better.
