“Surprising for a Buddhist country”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2012

This is the largest church in the whole of Thailand and is the seat for the Bishop of Chanthaburi. Beautifully designed and maintained, this huge church has many elements of old European design combined with Thai elements like wood.
Go on a Sunday morning to be amazed with the acoustics in the hall during service.

“Thailand's Finest Church?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2012

With its numerous Chinese temples, French churches and bustling gem market, Chanthaburi is anything but a typical Thai town. Close to the border with Cambodia, Chantahburi is a Thai city where the influence of Indochina is felt. Lingering around in its old wooden shophouses, since coverted to trendy bars and cafes, is the best game in town, but you might as well view Thailand's finest Catholic Church, with its mighty spires and pastel-colored stained glass. For us, three stars means good, but it is the riverside old town, not this one church, which gets our blood racing.

“Fantastic!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2011

A bit surprising to see in a land of temples and mosques, but this beautiful cathedral is well worth a visit! The interior looks very familiar until one looks up at the quintessiantial Thai wood ceiling. A very enjoyable building and spot to spend an hour or two!

“Largest Christian church in Thailand”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2011

There have been Roman Catholic churches near this site on the banks of the river since 1711, the current (fourth) Cathedral was built in 1906-09 in a gothic style. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is the largest Christian church in Thailand. It was built in Chanthaburi during the nearly 10 years of French occupation of Chanthabun (now Chanthaburi) from 1893 to 1904. It was completed in 1909 after Chanthaburi to have been returned to Siam (1904) by the French III republic.
Inside is beautiful; a highlight is the statue of the Virgin Mary - the statue of the Virgin Mary is nearly completely covered with gold, gemstones and emeralds... The blue of her cloak is composed of several thousand blue sapphires originating from local mines, plus hundreds of white sapphires from Sri Lanka, rubies from Thailand, gold, and green emeralds.
