“Good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012

The hotel was clean, the food was good and the staff were friendy. The pool was a little cold and the windy weather caught us out and we ended up with sunburn. The location is excellent as it is very close to the town centre and the airport. We did the submarine trip. It was certainly and experinece but perhaps a little expensive for how long you were actually on the sub (about 25 mins). We went to the Rango Texas which was an excellent day out, the bird show was especially good. We went on the Tiramanfia trip into the volcanoes, it was interesting and worth the money. Overall, a good holiday and the hotel was an excellent base.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012 via mobile

Good flight from Edinburgh on Sunday the 11th of November, our flight landed early, but the downside was that we had to wait an hour and a half for our luggage at the airport. Short 15 mins in mini bus to the hotel. On arrival we were given a room in the Palace side of the hotel, nice room, plenty of storage. I didn't mind the wooden bridge that joined the two hotels, although this can become slippery if it rains, saw a gentlemen slip on this after a short rainfall. Small gym but with good equipment. You can also take the long way round to the main part of the hotel through the complex gardens which are well maintained.

Thought that all the staff were excellent, and the entertainment was the best we have had for a long time whilst on holiday, the support acts played mainly lounge music, if you like strictly come dancing, you will love it here, it was nice to see a lot of people strutting their stuff.

The location was fantastic, with nice walks either direction.

The only downside for me was the restaurant, just was far too busy for me, very difficult to get a seat for two without being about 6 inches from next table. The food was ok, but I have had better on AI before, breakfast bacon and eggs were cold some mornings. I much preferred the Asian and Mexican as these were more spacious and the food was nice. Probably about the best snack bars that I have come across, with plenty of choice, but some of the birds do get access to this food, we tended to go when the snack bar first opened, before the birds got to it. If you fancy eating out, the cafes and bars are very reasonable in the surrounding area.

I suffer from skeeter's syndrome and get allergic reactions to mosquito bites, I got bitten about 20 times here, even though I was wearing repellent, had mosquito bands on and a plug in machine in the room, I asked at the hotel if they did anything about the mosquito problem and they said no, but they could spray our room if we liked, we had already bought a spray to do this, we did not use our balcony as it did not get the sun, and we kept the doors shut. My husband who never gets bitten, got about 4 bites. Out of my 20 bites there were 7 bites which were really bad, huge welts, then blisters that oozed pus, my husband and I have been to Egypt, Ibiza and Majorca this year and although I always get 1 or 2 bites, nothing like this. I have never had this problem in Tenerife or Gran Canaria.

I would return to a Riu hotel, and I did like Lanzarote as a resort, but the Mosquitos have put me off returning here, not sure why the hotel can't spray the gardens in the ground, like they do in Egypt.

Sorry!! but we booked this Hotel after reading all the glowing reports on this site!! Did you all stay at an other hotel? or do you all stay in the main block!! not Thomson Towers, the old bit over the wooden bridge! After reading the reports we can not believe what we found when we stayed at the Riu Paraiso. Yes the rooms were clean!! great maids! all ways cheerful and helpful!! yes the bar staff are good!! The entertainment staff are very good!! Viva El Pepe !! but apart from that it was all down hill!! about 400 to 500m over the wooden bridge to get your food and drink.
But the restaurant was just not good enough!! too much poor food, over cooked taste less muck! If you go down at a Busy time!! which is most of the time finding a seat ! that is a seat with a little space to move your arms !! you will be lucky. The food is all ways the same1 over and over, grilled chicken, fish and pizza, and of course salad and cold meats . No local nights or themed nights. Sorry but this does not compare to any of the other RIU hotels we have stay in before in Mexico and Spain!!!
Not the Hotel I was sold in the reviews! some people may like eating they meals in a busy dining room , with elbows and food coming across your table, but sorry not for me! yes it is like Waterloo station at times, fighting to find at seat in the bar is a joke! not enough seats, for all the customers!!.
Sorry!! do not want to go on!! but this Hotel needs to bring itself up to a better standard! it is not a 4 star!!!
Will stay at RIu hotels again but not this one!! Its a shame but let down by over crowding and a untidy, old annexe with no heart! or services.
Also can the reception staff listen to the guests some times and remember a smile goes a long way!! Please Mr Director shake yourself and get this hotel back on track please!!

Room Tip: Do not go over the bridge to the old hotel or Thomson Towers as it nicknamed unless you want to walk...

We spent a week in this hotel and dont have alot to moan about. The hotel is spotless, staff are very helpful, food is good, drink is good and location is also good.
Hotel room- We stayed in room 307 and this was over looking the pool and beach. It was above the entertainment hall. The rooms are spotless, though the beds are not very comortable and they do spilt...but there are breaks on them so you can stop them moving. There is a fridge and safe in the room. There are about 4 english television channels which is more than enough. My only complaint is the hair dryer is useless so may be an idea to bring your own.
Staff- The staff were all very polite and helpful. Not one complaint about them. The entertainment staff are great and not to pushy and they put so much effort into their evening shows. We enjoyed all the evening shows.
Food- The food in the main buffet was good. To be honest I have been to alot of all inclusive hotels and they are pretty basic but this hotel has alot of choice and if you are trying to diet they have lots of healthy options. Such as low fat cereals, fruits and yogurts at breakfast. Lunch and dinner there are always low fat lean meats and grilled fish. There is a Canarian, Mexican and Asian (Chinese) restaurant within the hotel that you can book at reception. We was lucky enough to book both the Asian and Mexican. We actually got to go to the Asian twice and the food was lovely and I would advise people to defo book a table. They are buffet style but the food was good.
Pools- There are two sunbathing areas. There is the mains pool which spilts into three pools the middle pool is the warmest. There is another pool with a swim up bar. There are plenty of sunbeds and we did not struggle with getting a bed but we were there in November I would imagine it would be different in the middle of the summer.
Drinks- There are self service stations that you can get red, white, and rose wine. beer, soft still drinks such as apple juice, fizzy drinks and hot drinks from and there is the bar where you get cava and cocktails. It was very easy to get a drink from the bar due to the amount of bar staff.
There are lots of things going on around the hotel such as exercise classes, kids clubs and adult games...so if you are someone that wouldnt be leaving the hotel then you will not get bored.
Location- The hotel is about 25 minutes walk from Playa Del Carmen or 5 euros in a cab and there is a another little town in the other direction so if you do fancy popping out for a spot of lunch or dinner there are plently of places to go. The beach is directly across the road from the hotel and its lovely and the sea is so nice and warm. It is 8 euros for two sunbeds and a umbrella.
The one things my partner wasnt to happy about was you could only connect to wifi in the reception and there was a charge for this. Also the gym is not in the same area as the sauna which made it abit hard to use both facilites.
Over all this is a very well kept hotel in a great location and if you have booked this hotel I am sure you will have a great time.

Went for a week with the wife 8th to 15th Nov and my first time in Lanzarote.
On arrival the rooms weren't quite ready but after a quick drink from the self service machines in the bar area we were soon on our way to our room which was situated in the 'other part' of the hotel and was a fair walk from the reception and main restaurant areas.
The room itself was a fair size and the beds fine, if not a little hard. Only one thin pillow which isn't adequate but obviously they will give you another on request. The balcony was large and technically had a sea view, but only if you had x-ray eyes that can see through the large palm trees that are in the way (the leaves actually spilling over into the balcony space)
The bathroom was fine and the towels fairly soft. There were complimentary toiletries but these were of a poor standard. A free safe is a nice touch though.
The main restaurant and bar seating area (as well as the night time entertainment venue) were all situated in the main hotel and it could get quite cool here at night as the area was open to the wind coming in from the pool area, but nevertheless it was always a hive of activity as people had drinks prior to or after dinner. Here you have the option of self service for wine, beer and soft drinks with cocktails, spirits and cava being obtained from the bar. The bar was always well staffed and the cocktails were very good (according to the wife)
The dinner time is from 6:30 until 10pm and being as we ate late it was never a problem to get a table and the food was always still being freshly prepared. You do though still have to get your own beer and wine as only water is served to your table. Cannot fault the food and as at most places fresh meat and fish were being grilled every night and pasta/pizza always available.
Breakfast was fine without being anything special although the smoothies were nice and the coffee excellant. Again service in terms of table clearing was first class and even though one of the days there was a general strike it never affected the running of the hotel at all, so a well done for everyone for that.
During the day we tended to stay round the pool at the other part of the hotel which tended to be much quieter with little or no interference from the animation team who appeared to be doing a good job, interacting with guests and always having a smile on their faces (don't how they do it sometimes with the hours they put in)
There were always plenty of beds and brollies and even though we picked a poor week weatherwise, with it being cloudy everyday, it was still comfortable enought to sit out in and ensured we came back with a bit of colour. Pool towels are available at no cost.
This part of the hotel was self sufficient in that it had its own bar, swim up pool bar, and snack bar and in fairness, whilst the snacks were your usual fare they were pretty much cooked to order, and were of the highest quality. In fact we used the snack bar everyday rather than going to the main restaurant for lunch which is testimony in itself.
There are 3 specialised restaurants of which we only went to the Asian, and whilst it was fine, it didn't stick out as anything special, just an 'eat as much as you like' Chinese buffet although you did get drinks served to your table.
The hotel itself is opposite a lovely beach and the sea was certainly warmer than the pools and a leisurely 30 min walk brings you into the heart of Puerta Del Carmen with its vast array of bars, shops and restaurants. No problem in finding the football if that is your thing and prices were very cheap at 1;50 euro for a large beer and most meals looked to be under 10 euro if you fancied a change. Also, if you are a smoker there are plenty of tobacconists which are much, much cheaper than the airport duty free.
The hotel has its own gate out onto the promenade which saves you some time and means you have to walk through the gardens which are well maintained.
One slight negative was the amount of flies although they never seemed to be in any of the eating areas so didn't give any cause for concern as regards food contamination.

Overall I was very impressed with the hotel and its facilities as well as the surrounding resort but I think what made it most memorable for me were the staff. I have yet to meet a more happy smiling bunch from the cleaners, gardeners through to the bar staff, animation team and reception. I would certainly recommend the hotel to others and now prefer Lanzarote to Tenerife, even though the airport coming back was a bit chaotic

We booked this hotel on the reviews it had! Did these people stay in a different hotel or are my standards so different. Lets do the good points. The bar staff save this hotel, happy smiley, and entertaining. They have a serve yourself section although unlike another hotel group spirits and bubbly are behind the bar bar area. The entertainment staff work really hard doing nearly every evening show. Our beds were of a high standard.
Bad points! Breakfasts cold bacon ! over cooked or under cooked eggs. At night you had to sit in the area used for the pool during the day, no nice bar area to speak of, food same old same old, unless you were lucky enough to book one of the Themed restuarants. I could go on and on but, it would seem like I was moaning. No just not up to 4 * standard.

Arrived back yesterday from another Fabulous week - just as good as our stay in May 2012, the staff are all friendly, food good, show cooking each night & saturday night was mussels which are a must. 3 additional restuarants: Canarian, Mexican & Asianic which is worth a visit, see reception to book as reservations only. Riu animation team offer something for all, I say try the cocktail games - good for a laugh. Location, walk down past the swimming pools, out the gate & just across the road a beautiful long beach ( pleanty of crosssings/ not busy) or turn right & walk 30 mins (on the flat) to shops and bars, turning left you can walk to matagorda. For coffee lovers - that was the one thing we missed during the day was a good coffee its self serve machines & in May the coffee was good whatever kind you wanted, this time oh dear... but the coffee served up at breakfast was the real mccoy & enjoyed. This hotel is popular & busy but the service & attention never falters, always a smile, we came back relaxed & will be planning another visit.
