“Perfect!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2011

A fantastic place to stay in the Berg! We had a chalet for a week which was great as we could do our own thing and every morning a lovely cleaning lady would come in and return the apartment to it's original state!

The staff are friendly and helpful. While there were no children with us, there are lots of activities for the kids - and those young at heart! From taking a paddle boat/canoe out on the little dam, playing Qolf, swing ball, volley ball, horse riding, there is a also a small mashie course and two swimming pools.

The hotel is situated in an ideal location, close to the Drakensber Boys Choir, Falcons RIdge, various adventure activities etc.

Would definitely return!

Spent 2 nights in winter - wasn' t very cold that particular weekend.
Rooms are good sized with good sized bathrooms.
We went on a BBD package - the food was great at all times.
Just a great place to relax - fire places were lit in the bar and in the dining area.
Great safe 40 minute trek through the hills - safe enviroment.
Very child friendly - more fmailies than couples so if you liek children then this is fine.....

What a wonderful family hotel. Food was exceptional (sadly my tummy too small, would have liked to have tried everything). Entertainment for children was lovely. Boat rides at no extra cost, rooms are comforable (though not large) and it is well maintained with staff that were so polite and helpful. Do take your own pillows though (ouch).

We stayed from the 5th to the 9th of August. We booked in as 4 couples looking for a fun getaway out in nature and we were not dissapointed. The accomodation is clean, comfortable and you have all the amenities you need on vacation. The property does show some signs of age however it is excellently maintained and everything works as it should. Enjoyed all the activities most of which are free, which was great. Loved the organised games of guess the song, word search etc. You never run out of things to do, we hardly left the resort vacinity. The landscape is absolutely breathtaking, the staff are friendly and efficient. The food is excellent. The general atmoshpere is vibrant and alive. I would be hard pressed to find anything to fault. We all had such a good time, certainly looking forward to our next visit and definately the next adrenalin rush of the canopy tour, a must do for anyone!

We spent several wonderful early Winter days in the Champagne Valley, based at the Drakensberg Sun. The staff and managers were particularly friendly, always helpful and for us provided really good advice on activities at the hotel as well as the surrounds. Our primary aim was to bird-watch and hike, which we did on the hotel property as well as enjoyed canoeing on the wonderful trout dam, whilst watching Pied Kingfishers plucking young fingerlings from the waters edge. Our highlight was doing a short but steep hike to the Sphinx in the Monks Cowl reserve, which adjoins the Drakensberg Sun. We also went to the Drakensber festival which was an absolute blast, with allot of local and national artists and craftsmen displaying their wares and artwork. The Drakensberg Sun certainly provided a great base to enjoy the valley and we would highly recommend their tea and scones. In closing it is a great hotel for romantic couples as well as families with young children as they have fantastic activity based programmes on the go.

Room Tip: Try and book one of their winter 7 day specials.

My fiance and I went to this hotel for a midweek break and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the hotel. The rooms are somewhat old fashioned and a refurbishment would take the hotel to excellent level. Having said that the service was wonderful and all the staff were very friendly and helpful.

The food was varied and tasty, with a range of meat, fish and vegetarian options each day.

The canopy tour that can be walked to across the dam wall is well worth it and is a truely unique way to see the landscape. Check at the reception for your discount voucher too.

We also went horseriding, which is again walking distance from the hotel and a great way to see the beautiful area. The hotel is fantastically placed with mountain views and hikes past waterfalls and through forests on the side of the mountain.

The spa is also definitely worth a visit, a massage was the perfect way to finish off our week at the hotel.

After the 5.5hr from Johannesberg is was wonderful to 'discover' this resort. The reception was really friendly and we received plenty of help to move into our self catering apartment giving wonderful views of the Drakensberg.

In the morning we awoke to bird song and lush green lawns. We had considered to do the self catering element but after sampling the hotels sumptious buffet dinner which included beef, lamb, fresh fish, curries and chicken, not to forget to mention the vast assortments of deserts self catering was positively out!

There is plenty to do on and around this resort apart from the Bingo! Including swiiming, bird watching, hiking, falconry displays, horseback riding, canoeing and the Tree Canopy Tour. The latter a truly exhilarating experience hurtling over a 65m deep canyon with the longest of the 12 runs at 179m in length. For those otherwise concerned parents, young children are well catered by the provision of an excellent and safe playgound.

The nearest township is Winterton some 30 km from the resort. Visitors will find a very small interesting museum that offers an insight of the Anglo-Boer war. Also there a newly opened boutique shop/restaurant 'the Pig and Plough' which does a light lunch. After which it is then but a short drive to the Spioenkop Nature Reserve where you will easily find Zebra, Giraffe, Springbok and very few other tourists unlike some other larger game parks.
