“beautiful accomodations, old warm charm, stellar location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2014

When I planned my trip to South Africa, it was independent, I worked with SAR travel and
told them I wanted to explore the Drakensberg and she recommended this hotel
I drove from Durban up to the hotel via wash bed roads last miles but so worthwhile
The rondavel type accommodations were very comfortable. The food in the dining room
was worthy of a hotel that has been around for years
There is a seating and a table is assigned as in old world.
An entirely memorable stay and so refreshing......

The setting is spectacular - in the midst of the most magnificent mountain range.
The accommodation is spacious, extremely comfortable and spotlessly clean. We have never stayed in such a well laid out and spacious family / interleading room situation in all our travels.
The hotel amenities are well kept and accessible - we loved the tennis, lawn bowls, puttputt and the children had a great time in the games room.
The staff are kind, helpful and truly good country folk.
The walks and hikes on offer, as well as horseriding, accommodate everyone.
And I've kept the best for last - the meals and food. The breakfasts, teas and dinners were of brilliant quality and the buffet selections were exceptionally large and varied. Fresh fruit and vegetables, well prepared, delicious and hearty meats and soups, superb pastries and mouth-watering desserts ...
Very charming and traditional hotel.
Very highly recommended

on the 5th of July 2014, me, my husband and two kids had the previlage to attend my sister's wedding at the hotel. while I entertained the bride in her luxurious honeymoon suite overlooking the mountains, my hubby and kids explored the hiking trails , waterfalls and the swimming pool. breakfast and dinner was always the highlight for me. the food was Devine and catered for all tastes. had roast beef, authentic curry, stir fry and pasta all on the same day. the wedding food was excellent although the event organiser took her time to get the venue ready and it seems that she did not communicate duties correctly to her staff. that meant we had to finish some of the final details the morning of the wedding. I would also really recommend the local photographer, Jacques, and the two ladies from winterton that did our hair and makeup. we stayed in interlocking rooms and the hotel even included t shirts for the kids...that I hear is for school holiday guests. I would highly recommend this venue for a wedding.

My family of 4 enjoyed a week long break at Cathedral Peak Hotel. What a great family holiday. The kids loved the mini golf and quad bike activities, and their highlight was the walk to the closest waterfall to the hotel. The views are great, and we were lucky enough to have snow on the highest peaks. The food at the hotel is above average, the highlight is the desert selection - never failed to impress, and variety each night. We stayed in a family room, with 1 double and 2 single beds. The beds could have been better. The view from our room was not great - look straight into the roof of the units in front. Kids enjoyed the kiddies club activities including tractor rides and pony rides. Reception staff and restaurant staff were friendly and competent. Cleaning staff were not friendly. We will likely return.

Room Tip: We had room 15, a family room. Workable, but no view. This is the closest room to the restaurant.

This hotel is located in the spectacular mountain bowl. This alone makes it worth the stay. THe activities for hikers, cyclists, climbers are many and varied. However, bring your own equipment. The gear for hire is expensive and in a shocking state of disrepair.
The beauty of the hotel is marred by signs of decay and declining maintenance and the staff seem to be disinterested and uninformed.
Dining is sumptuous and well prepared, bur again service is poor.
A great pity, because this hotel should be one of the premier destinations.

Everything about this hotel is enchanting. Exciting walks start from the hotel as do the mountain bike trails. There's so much to see and do here even with this being our fourth visit. You won't find better food anywhere else in the Burg but here. We stayed in a superior room and it definitely didn't disappoint. A big thanks to Johan and Kerry, from the quad bike centre for their assistance in getting my broken MTB chain replaced... You all rock!!!
