“Still the best hotel view in the Drakensberg”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2013

We have stayed at the hotel many many times over the last 30 years or so and keep going back as it is situated in one of our favourite parts of the Drakensberg. It has gone through many changes, some good and some not so good, and is now definitely a resort hotel with all sorts of activities on offer.

It still has the most spectacular view of any hotel in the Berg and the Executive rooms are great with the best view of all. The staff are as always friendly and helpful. However, we found that there were a number of things that detracted from the experience this time. The dinner buffet has become stodgy and overcooked - too many choices and not great quality. There were very few people in the hotel and less variety and better quality would have been great!

In addition the multiple activities such as golf and particularly helicopter flights and quad biking (which we think is a disgrace in such a quiet and beautiful place) do not add much and in fact disrupt the environment quite badly - both in terms of noise pollution and in terms of erosion and actual destruction of paths used by hikers. We have also found that the maintenance of hiking paths is not great. Good near the hotel and the Didima camp, but even a little further away, overgrown and eroded. It would be great

Room Tip: The Executive rooms are the best from the point of view and quiet. Choose 404 for the best view of...

This hotel looks fantastic in it's location, the spectacular, World heritage listed Drakensburg Ranges, but it does not live up to its appearance, at least in the accommodation wings. If you want to visit this area, there are not a lot of hotels to chose from so this hotel is probably as good as it gets and overall, it is quite comfortable.
The public areas of the hotel are mostly well presented and there are signs stating that renovations are taking place. The hotel has a lovely lounge and a cozy bar, in the English tradition and in fine weather, there are nice outside areas to relax and have a drink.
Guest bedrooms are situated in separate, thatched-roof accommodation wings, which look great from the outside, but on the inside, look somewhat dated and in need of refurbishment. Whether or not all bedrooms are the same I am not certain, but this was the case with our room. The room itself was a good size, but looked as though nothing had been done to it since at least the sixties. There room had a good size balcony with lovely views of the hotel grounds and surrounding countryside. Tea and coffee making facilities are provided (our electric kettle didn't work), an in-room safe (which also didn't work). The bathroom contained both a bath and shower, but the hot water tap for the bath didn't run hot water, only cold. Fortunately the shower had hot and cold water. A bed turn-down service is also provided.
A buffet dinner is available with a good range of hot and cold dishes; breakfast is also a buffet, which was also pretty good.
The grounds of the hotel are very well kept, with lovely gardens and a range of sporting facilities (bowling green, tennis courts, volley ball, swimming pools) for guests' use. All of this surrounded by the spectacular Drakensburg Ranges, including Cathedral Peak, which had snow on its peak. There a lot of walking/hiking trails if this is what interests you.
Free WiFi is available in public areas of the hotel. Overall, the spectacular location makes a visit to this hotel worthwhile, even though it has the feel of a large guest house.

I have been going here on and off for over twenty years, there are several magnets found no where else, firstly Cathedral Peak mountain itself which I climbed in total 13 times in my younger days, then the warm friendly country type hotel which it is, with an old fashioned genre represented in just about every thing, the great breakfasts, lunches, teas and lunches in the dining hall, accompanied by old fashioned manners by the staff which is fabulous.
The pool is still a favourite with everyone of course, but the overshadowing of the mountains all round imbue the energy with a certain crispness, the air, the mountain streams and eagles hovering way above is a remarkable escape from city life.

We recently attended a wedding at the hotel and it was absolutely fabulous. We stayed with our daughter in one of the interleaved double rooms. The one room had a queen size bed and the other room two single beds. Ideal for families. The rooms had ample space for us all. We had to share a bathroom, but that was not a problem. The breakfast and dinner of the hotel are of outstanding value. They really cater for all. There are quite a few places where you can sit outside to enjoy the view. And what a view it is!
The chapel is ideal for small weddings. The view from the chapel guarantees a perfect wedding atmosphere.
There are quite a few walking trails close by.
Be prepared to travel quite a distance on a very narrow tarred (with potholes) road to the hotel, but once you get there you will forget the road.
I would definitely recommend this hotel as wedding venue or just a getaway for a family weekend.

We spent a weekend at Cathedral Peak in May 2013. We went with my mom (64) and our son (6).
Our son had a great time - lots of activities! We played Putt Putt (18 hole course, which is great fun), had fun on the jungle gym and played lawn chess. Seeing it was cold we didn't swim. The games room is a little tired and needs work. The pool table mechanism was stuck and we had to get staff to help - which they did promptly.
The hotel grounds are wonderfully kept and we could walk around comfortably.
We booked a quad bike trip on the Sat afternoon and found it totally invigorating and terrifying at the same time - tons of fun!
The staff were friendly and helpful.
We booked 2 superior rooms with interleading doors. Rooms were spacious and clean. Beds comfortable and the views good.
Dining room was spacious and clean and service excellent. Food quality was excellent. Our son is a very picky eater and was spoilt for choice - which was superb!
Would definitely recommend this hotel to any other families!

We stayed 3 nights in a lovely room with great views of the mountains. The room was comfortable, quiet, a good bathroom. All meals are included in the tariff. The food is of good quality and choice, but it is a buffet style. We did the helicopter ride to see Tugela Falls and that was good. The golf course is very photogenic -especially with the baboons running around. We enjoyed our 3 days here.

This hotel is located at the end of the valley and has the most wonderful views of peaks and hills. It is built into a hill so there are slopes between the restaurant/bars/patio areas and much of the accommodation; to avoid falling off heels I had to wear flat sandals all week. Breakfast and dinner were buffet-style and there was a huge choice. We had packed lunches most days as we were out walking but there is a good lunch menu. There is also a well-stocked shop. Everything can be charged to your room bill. My bungalow was quite close to the chapel, but one of the paths down to it was quite poorly lit at night and it was steep. The room was spacious but very dark because of such heavy curtains. The bathroom was well appointed with a bath and over-bath shower. The hotel has a lot of facilities - although I didn't use them I saw a pool, bowling green, volleyball court and golf course. Horse-riding is available and there are a series of free daily walks. I joined a hotel walk to Cathedral Peak but we stopped well short of the summit and I felt it was because the guide just didn't want to do it. He had already wasted a lot of time having made a misjudgement about where to cross a river. It was very disappointing and a complaint was made to the hotel's management for them to take forward. I was on a walking holiday and had a fabulous week walking in such a scenic and challenging area.

Room Tip: I've stayed in this hotel previously and last time stayed in a room near the pool as it isn'...
