“Fishing and B&B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2013

We stayed with Diane and Barry for two nights in early December. A lovely place to stay, everything one could want. I had a day fishing booked with Barry and at last I could say that I had a successful day on the water. We used both nymph and dry fly, caught on both. Barry is a first class guide, he was spotting fish that I never saw and also incredibly patient, calmly untangling my line for the nth time. This type of fishing is very different to the US and UK and without a good guide one wouldn't stand much of a chance of a fish. The water is very clear and the fish are large and wary.
A really first class stay.

My wife and I recently took a golf holiday on New Zealand's South Island, and base upon a friend's recommendation decided to add a day's fishing at Gore. I looked up fishing guides in the area and came upon Wentworth Heights, which provided both guiding services and a B&B. Diane and Barry Perkins were very helpful with making arrangements which would accommodate our busy golfing schedule. After golfing our way down to the South end of the South Island, we arrived at Wentworth Heights. Diane and Barry's B&B is very comfortable and well appointed, and has a beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding area. Both Diane and Barry made us feel right at home, and we very much enjoyed visiting with them. We learned a lot about New Zealand and fly fishing in the area. After a pleasant night's sleep, we enjoyed breakfast, which included several dishes prepared from Diane's own recipes. After breakfast it was off fishing for the day. Barry is a consummate fisherman, and has an extensive knowledge of the area, the rivers, and his quarry. Barry is also skilled at reading the water to determine where a hungry Trout may be hiding, and the best "bug" to use, and how to present it so the Trout will be tempted into biting. Barry uses top-of-the-line rods and reels, and ties his own flies. If you are fortunate, you may get to take some of Barry's "special bugs" to try on the Trout back home. Barry gave us a lot of one-on-one instruction, and in no time we were making casts to spots Barry identified as likely to hold fish. We caught some fish, saw quite a few more, and missed a number of bites. The weather didn't cooperate on the day we were fishing, but we had a great time fishing with Barry none-the-less. If you are looking for a big, fancy lodge, then Wentworth may not be for you. But, if you like good, friendly people and are looking for a quality fishing adventure, then this is the place for you as I'm sure Barry will put you on the fish. I hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did. Kent & Lori, Danville, CA, USA.

Thank you so much Kent and Lori for your very kind review. We absolutely love showing visitors our great wee town and farming community, and also the fantastic fishing rivers. In spite of the weather not being kind to you, we are glad you enjoyed your fishing experience.

We stayed two nights at Wentworth Heights B&B - what a gem of a place. Diane and Barry are the most fantastic hosts. One could eat off the floor, the place is sooooo clean. Thanks Diane for all the local knowledge on places to dine and things to do around the wonderfully surprising town of Gore. Thanks Barry for the expert fly-fishing guiding on the Mataura River. What a river - lives up to its reputation as the best brown trout river in the world! As another reviewer had noted, we came as strangers and left as friends. We will be back. Thanks again Diane and Barry, you do your country proud.

Arjuna and Nehra...it was an absolute pleasure having you to stay and we were humbled by your kind words. We really hope we get the chance to meet again and that one day your travels (and fishing) will bring you back to Gore. It is people like yourselves that make our work so enjoyable.

We arrived rather late as we had spent a superb day in the Catlins. Dianne and Barry were most welcoming and we felt very much at home.

We had a drink with them and shared our stories. Our room was very comfortable and Dianne and Barry were very helpful in recommending a very good restaurant - "Howl at the moon:" was just the type of food I was looking for - great Blue eyed Cod.

Breakfast was excellent - great home made jams and great selection of Cereals. We declined a hot breakfast that was offered, and I am sure it would have been excellent.

I would love to come back as Barry showed us the fly fishing trips on offer, so one day.....

I would love Dianne and Barry to look us up when they visit Sydney next as they are a delightful couple.
Highly recommended

We stayed at Wentworth Heights B&B in October 2011 for fly fishing. It was perfect for our needs. We returned in October 2013 bringing another couple and it was still perfect. Diane and Barry work as a team to give visitors an integrated fishing and accommodation experience. Barry is a very good guide: totally professional, sharing his knowledge with you to develop your fishing techniques and skills and going to areas that help your casting problems... just a great guy to be with on the water and the fish seem to love him! Diane keeps the home fires burning with her hearty breakfasts and lunches, immaculate housekeeping and enjoyable apres-fishing appetisers and drinks. Together they are very relaxed, well organised hosts who ensure your visit goes well. You depart feeling glad you came and wanting to return again.

Thank you Lois for your kind praise. Returning guests are our biggest compliment and it was a pleasure to welcome you and Dennis back to stay with us again. In spite of the difficult conditions Dennis and John did so well with their fishing and Barry enjoyed their company on the river. Fantastic that you and Barbara made the most of your time in Gore and we agree that Maple Glen Garden is world class. Once again, thank-you for taking us out to dinner. It was a great evening with lovely company.

Having travelled from Christchurch to Gore, we received a lovely welcome with tea and homemade biscuits. Our host. Diane was lovely and made us feel at home. The bedroom was spacious and relaxing. We had a lovely breakfast, with choices.
We later saw Dianes husband Barry as he is a fishing guide and had been with a client that day.
Unfortunately because he was fully booked my husband was unable to obtain a day with him but he was helpful in pointing him in where to fish.
We would love to go back if ever we return to Gore.

My husband, John, on his own, spent a few weeks travelling around NZ, finding nice places to stay and good fishing. He really enjoyed his stay here and found it a great pleasure to be cared for so well. The hosts were generous with their hospitality and local knowledge, in this case, of the fishing. He is looking forwards to coming back again next year....! He is still going on about breakfast!!!

Thank you so much for your kind review. It was a pleasure to have John stay with us and the other fishermen staying here at the same time enjoyed his company as well. Next time Debbie we hope you can join John on his trip to N.Z.
