We had received a double massage, use of the spa facilities and hot springs and a light lunch as a wedding gift from a friend.
We made a booking a few days earlier to spend half a Sunday at the Caledon Spa.
Our plans ended up changing and on the day before we attempted to change the booking for our massage to a later time slot. The therapist on the phone was very unhelpful and claimed that they were fully booked on that Sunday. As it turns out, I saw only one other person receiving a treatment while we were at the spa (which was over half a day)- with the four beauty therapists sitting around and chit chatting.
Upon arrival for the massage, my husband and I were taken through to separate rooms. I then asked my masseuse why husband was not in the same room on the opposite massage bed seeing that this was a wedding gift for a double massage.
He was fetched but the tone and approach of the staff went from luke-warm to cold. The massages were great. But at no stage were we made to feel special: recently married couples should be treated with bells and whistles....
After our massages we went off to use the sauna and steam room. The facilities were dirty and by 2 PM the sauna had been switched off. It was very disturbing to find other patrons smoking cigarettes outside these facilities.
The hot springs were lovely as always. However, a wide selection of cigarette stompies around the various pool seems to indicate that cleaning is not of a high standard and that the 'no smoking' policy is not enforced.
Furthermore, it is quite disturbing that patrons jump into pools in normal clothing, i.e. wearing long shorts and tops - and not specific bathing costumes.
Once we had finished up, we wanted to enjoy our light lunch. The lunch had to be pre-ordered and none of the staff informed us that it had been ready for quite some time. We arrived to a cold and sad looking sandwich and salad. The lacklustre staff at the spa were very unhappy that we had the audacity to ask them to reorder the sandwich.
We waited for 30 minutes... apparently the sandwich had to be ordered from the hotel. We then took a walk down to hotel ourselves (in the rain) and sorted out our own lunch. Unlike the staff at the spa, the waitresses at the hotel were lovely and helpful (especially the lovely Jeanette).
All in all a very unsatisfying exercise and certainly not worthy of a wedding gift. We dare not tell our lovely friend that his well-meant wedding gift turned out such a fiasco.
My recommendation to the management of the spa - train your staff to be friendly to the clientele. The old adage of 'customer is king' is most certainly not enforced at the Caledon Spa. More likely 'we'll help if it suits us'. Not an experience I'd like to repeat.
