“A terrific restaurant and inn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2013

I stayed at the Golden Lion for two nights, and was very impressed by the quality of the accommodation and food. My room seems to have been renovated recently, and to a very high standard. The pub had a good selection of real ales, and the food was fantastic. I had two amazing dinners there, and the morning breakfasts were fine as well. I would definitely return.

We descended on the Golden Lion after a 12 mile walk on the Cleveland Way, so we were ready for sustenance and the Golden Lion did not disappoint. We were glad to have booked on a Saturday night, but the packed house made for a buzzing atmosphere and the service was excellent - prompt and friendly. The food is really high quality, ranging from a gourmet burger and chips, through to duck confit - there is not a huge vegetarian selection, but any of the starters can be turned into a main course, which increases the options. Puddings were a particular highlight - the 5 of us each had something different, and they were all gorgeous, with one friend declaring it was "the best sticky toffee pudding" she had ever eaten - high praise indeed. Two courses with wine ended up costing about £30 per head, which is a bargain for the quality of the food and experience. Highly recommended!

The Golden Lion is one of those places that keeps it simple. Brilliant staff that want to work, all with the same 'goals' to make you comfortable. At times packed and you may indeed have to wait but have a drink (or 6) at the bar or out on the front of the place. The owner is nearly always there but if not his deputy Nick does a great job. Lindsey is outstanding!!! Simple food done nicely, one for anyone's shortlist. They have been doing it right for sometime now.

Room Tip: Room 2 is just the job

We arrived for supper, unreserved, just after six and the place was already heaving. A good sign. The most competent manager was happy to fit us (6in all) in, with a reasonable leaving time. Interesting menu, well prepared, limited but well chosen wine list, good choice of real ales. Service was prompt but unhurried and the atmosphere buzzing, probably mainly with locals. Prices are possibly highish for the area, but you get quality.

On a heather walking holiday, we stayed the entire 6 nights at The Golden Lion. We started in room 4, but when the shower started playing-up, we moved to room 2. Both are a good size, and have very comfy beds (twins in 4, double in 2) but 2 is considerably lighter, having 3 windows. Shower toiletries are good, showers powerful and tea/coffee/kettle are provided. Breakfast is good, car parking is free, but only when you can find a space in the village.

Don't be deceived by the outside, the rooms in this hotel are modern and comfortable with the best shower of the whole coast to coast! The food was lovely but a little pricey and the breakfast was good but not quite up to the same standard as some of our other stays .... Would recommend the extra few kms to stay the night in this lovely village
