“a beautiful Thai gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2013

Have visited several times over the past 9 years or so (at different times of the year) & always enjoy coming back. This is the perfect place to unwind & to recover from the tat and trash that unfortunately defines most of Phuket now. Apart from the salt water pool & beautiful low key grounds, there is a very clean beach which is safe for swimming & kayaking. Though there are now some air con rooms, highly recommend the non air con ones; you will miss the whole point of the resort otherwise. On my most recent visit there was no manager; it will be interesting to see what, if any, changes are made. Hopefully they will only be superficial: this place is a gem. Bring bug spray, a good supply of books & enjoy.

We arrived early around 9.00 AM. Normally, the check in is at 2.00 PM, but our room was ready at 11.00 AM. The hotel staff was kind enough to let us use the hotel facilities during that time and welcome us with drinks and smiles.

The hotel staff is very kind and give you all the information that you might need. Tom, the manager takes his time to discuss with you and welcome you.

The hotel itself is gorgeous, with an amazing garden and swimming pool with view on the bay. We booked a See Breeze room with view on the sea, which was very nice and relaxing. Just staying in the room and listening to the sound of the waves ... Amazing !

Few negative point: no hot water in the shower, not possible to lock the door.

Overall, this hotel is excellent

This resort was definitely the highlight of our recent trip to Thailand. We got upgraded to a family beach villa on arrival and our room was absolutely beautiful. I just love the open-style living of this resort. It is also quite small and intimate, which was also a bonus.

Thanks to Tom & Tammy (resort manager and his wife) for your hospitality and friendliness during our stay. It was great to meet you and leka to speak in our own language to Tammy!

We can't wait to be back at Koyao Island Resort!

I can honestly recommend this hotel and island to anyone who loves Thailand.

Room Tip: All the beach villas are absolutely beautiful. Room 16 (studio) is also great with a lovely view an...

Thank you so much for your kind review.

Koyao Island is a gem, and this resort captures its beauty. Koyao Island Resort has direct beach access- good for swimming, kayak or simply relaxing. The view from the resort is stunning. The only place you might get a better view than this is from the Hilltop bar at the Six Senses right next door. The rooms are tastefully decorated. The lack of air-conditioning is a plus as you don't get the hum as you sleep in the open-air concept rooms.
The hotel ground is immaculately maintained, which befits the barefoot luxury feel of the resort.

The hotel provides free kayaks to explore the neighbouring beaches- don't try to kayak to the islands opposite as the are a lot further that they look. Mountain bikes are also provided and cycling around the island is quite an adventure.
We were on the island in August, which is a low season. The weather then was quite good, with only intermittent light drizzle for no more than 1-2 hours max a day.

The restaurant serves a good selection of Thai food and a few 'Western' dishes at reasonable price. Great ambiance and service from the staff.

Having said all the positive points, there are a few little things with rooms for improvement:
1. As the rooms have no locks, the safe was too small to keep our valuables.
2. The mosquito coils (which were necessary) were lit without proper base or cover- the we're ashes on the floor and potential accident risk
3. The room we stayed in had no hooks or rails to hang our towels or wet clothes. We noticed that some rooms had bamboo rails for this purpose. We requested one from the reception but nothing turned up till the end ou our stay.

Apart from these niggles, which can be easily rectified, we had a great holiday. We look forward to coming back to this resort, and would recommend it to our family and friends. High praises to Tom and his team for running this resort at such a high standard!

Dear Styleoqueen,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this wonderful review.

We are very happy to read that you enjoyed every aspect of the Resort and our facilities.

We appreciate your feedback and have noted that you would have preferred a larger in room safe and we will be looking into this. In the meantime we have a larger safe for any additional valuables at our Reception.

Please accept our sincerest apologies for the delay you experienced when requesting a bamboo railing. Our Maintenance Team are in the process of ensuring that there is a railing in each of our Villas. The same with mosquito coil holders.

Out entire Team look forward to welcoming you back in the not too distant future!

We stayed here many years ago... Pre tsunami... and I see its had a revamp and looks just as amazing! It was a hair raising long boat then tuk tuk trip to the resort, but when we arrived we thought we may have actually died and were in heaven... The suite was wonderful and spacious and let the outside in. The beach was quiet and calm, it was intimate and very tranquil. The staff amazing and friendly. Plenty excursions, we did snorkelling trips and kayaking enjoyed a massae and snorkelling, I nearly landing on a black tip reef shark as I jumped off the boat... Not sure who got a bigger fright. Truly breathtaking spot and one we shall alway remember as a favourite. Thailand also being a placed we returned to and live, but this spot is magical!

Room Tip: Not sure the layout is the same, but we had the end beach villa facing the beach. Secluded and gorge...

Dear Taitin,

Thank you very much for taking the time to write this wonderful review.

We have refurbished all of our Beach and Family Beach Villas without taking away any of the natural charm.

The Island has also changed a lot there is now a paved road which circumnavigates the island making the trip to the Resort from the Pier much more comfortable (there are however no pathways/sidewalks except of course in the Market). The best way to arrive is still by private long tail boat.

We hope to be able to welcome you back!

Phang Nga was not on my original itinerary of Phuket. But after watching a video of this amazing national park in the reception of where I was staying at The Residence, Bangtao beach, Phuket, I was hooked and wanted to find out more.

The helpful tour adviser there, Will, showed us a map of 100 islands (koh this, koh that) and recommended avoiding the hoardes and hassle at James Bond island, and suggested a more low key and authentic trip to Koh Yao Noi, the smaller of the sister islands.

Our criteria for choosing a place to stay were: to be highly recommended in user reviews; on the beach looking out at the beautiful limestone karsts; oh and somewhere charming. This is how we landed on Koyao Island Resort. It was low season, so I was able to negotiate a healthy discount in exchange for a healthy-long stay - thanks Tammy.

Koyao Resort was everything we had expected, and more. What's really impressive is the setting. It sits on this long pristine beach, which was practically deserted while we were there, and felt like our own private beach in paradise, fringed by coconut palms and lush vegetation - nice. The salt water infinity pool melds into the sea beyond, punctuated by the limestone outcrops which rise up into the mist. Perfect for gazing at and letting your mind, and all your worries, drift away.

There are 24 bungalows. Some are closed units with aircon, but most are open, but secure, and airy with fans and mosquito nets, with rain showers outdoors. This was a new experience for us. And we absolutely loved it! The bungalows are so charmingly appointed. We're not talking bling gold taps, but functional and nice fittings using local building materials, thatched roof, bamboo beds, teak furniture etc. The views from the bungalows are amazing. Bungalow 15, family size, has the best views and a secluded beach. Nothing is more uplifting than waking up in the morning to those sea views and the sounds of the sea.

Breakfast is generous and delicious. There is a good choice of East and West menu choices, complemented with a buffet which has excellent breads. The coffee is proper continental machine made.

The staff are delightful. They are very attentive, well trained and polite. Nothing is too much trouble. It's the same at the spa. I went for a foot massage and treatment, and I'd suffered cuts to my leg earlier that day while out running. Without asking, the masseur dressed my cut and made it better.

There is plenty to do trips wise, either organised directly with the resort for convenience or if you have to budget the tour organisers on the way into town is a good option. Hiring a motorbike from the resort to explore the island is recommended, or use the free pedal bikes provided. The lounge has a selection of board games, foreign books and wifi, and is where you find the guests staring into their ipads and iphones.

The restaurant provides a very good quality and fresh menu selection. They also have themed evenings, e.g. fish bbq or traditional Thai buffet night. If you fancy venturing out, just outside the resort on the way to Six Senses next door you come past Mr Chan's which does exceptionally good fish - fresh catch of the day bought at the pier. Try the soft shelled crab or local speciality spicy prawn fish cakes (not on the menu) or a big oven baked fish (grouper etc.) with Thai herbs. You won’t be disappointed.

The last comment goes to the wonderful staff. You get a sense the owner, Jean Michel, has produced a strong culture for very friendly, high quality service. Added to the unique island culture and the beautiful surroundings make this easily one of my favourite places to have visited. Before long you feel at home, part of an extended family along with the other guests, and then you never want to leave. Go, but don't tell everyone, or it will get spoilt.

Living in Thailand since over 10 years, its not easy to get surprised by a tropical island. However, Koh Yao Noi did exactly that. Its not only super easy to get to (90 minutes form the airport including a nice boat ride) and surprising little developed in terms of mainstream tourism, its also stunningly beautiful and there are lots of things to do - my favourite was free climbing up the rocks straight out of the sea!

The Koyao Island Resort was the perfect based for our 3 days on the island. The staff was super friendly and the spacious bungalows perfectly set back a few meters off this wonderful beach - maybe on of the best pieces of beach on the island. Their open back-to-nature architecture gave us a new sleeping experience (don't worry you won't feel unsafe!) compared to the standard interiors or most 5 star resorts.

Also the location of the resort is just perfect. You not only have one of the best views (and sunsets) you could imagine, you are also only five minutes away from La Luna - a happening pizzeria so good that I have trouble to compare it almost any in Bangkok (where I live) or Munich (were I'm from).

Thanks again to all Koyao staff for making our stay there such a remarkable experience. I am very much looking forward to come back!
