“Not everyone's cup of tea”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013 via mobile

We had a Sunday lunch for two. We'd booked, which necessary, as this is a very popular venue in the area. The pub's been fully refurbished recently. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but you certainly won't forget it: lots of cut glass, mirrors and baroque style fittings. The food is very good and they have an excel, net selection of reasonably proceed wines. Service is fast and efficient, if a little hurried. We got the distinct impression they wanted our table. But perhaps that's being picky. We recommend the Rib of beef.

“Awful service, rude staff, very slow but food is good”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

We visited at Christmas and the decorations were fabulous and worth a trip just to see. But we were very disappointed with the service. The staff are rude and quite standoff-ish - there was no warm welcome. The service was the slowest I have ever experienced, the drinks took over half an hour, they took even longer to take our order and we were almost on the floor with hunger by the time the food arrived and they weren't even busy. The food was very good but not worth the long wait. We asked for mayonnaise to go with the chips and were told quite rudely they 'don't do it', we asked for two extra drinks that never arrived and were served the wrong desert - we didn't complain because firstly we'd been there so long secondly the landlord didn't seem like he would welcome our thoughts. Its such a shame as its a great little pub. Very friendly young man behind the bar though who was the only member of staff to make you feel welcome.

“Wonderful experience, rebooking now for next visit, want to try more from the menu!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

Only just starting to use trip advisor but had to review this place. First visit was a few months ago when we had an early evening supper with my 8 year old son. Decor quirky and well thought out profesional touches everywhere you'd expect from experienced hosts. Good choice of real ales and attractive menu choices on, again quirky, clip boards. Was tempted by the cassoulet as it's always been a favourite but often disappointed when comparing it to South of France .... but no disapointment tonight excellent recipe and execution, delicious, presented beautifully and generous portion. Lucy had quail ... also delicious, Charlie had fish and chips and wolfed it. Lovely Woodies ale. Desserts also sumptuous, we went on recommendation and it was everything we'd been told about and more, went again with visiting reletives for a light Sunday lunch just before Christmas and again with friends for dinner recently.

All we can say is that we'll keep going back as long as it stays this good, we've eaten in the Library (snug?) and the main restarant and the bar area (first visit) and each visit has been as good, service great, polite and surprisingly fast .... the light lunch arrived while our first drink was still underway ..... So, go there, try it., you'll love it!

I ready one dodgy review and can't believe it's the same place ... they must have hit a very unusually bad night.

Just about to book for Lucy's Birthday in 2 weeks for a 'party night' meal and we can't wait.

“The perfect country pub”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

Several people had recommended this pub and after we met a couple on the beach in Egypt who recommended it we thought it was about time we ate there!. We were certainly not disappointed. It was a Saturday night and the place was very busy. Fortunately we booked but because we only booked the evening before we were given a "cocktail" table just outside the restaurant which was lovely. From the minute we arrived the staff were very attentive and despite being busy we were served our drinks very quickly, seated promptly and given menus. The menu is very good, with daily specials, and everything is sensibly priced. The food was excellent and I treated myself to a banana split which was sumptuous!
There is a lovely ambiance about the place and the decor is superb, we will be back very soon.

“Great expectations...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2013 via mobile

Returned to pub after outstanding meal in the summer. We had high hopes that were very quickly dashed. We were a party of 9 seated on 2 tables. We ordered the mezze platter which sounded fantastic on paper. We were let down. The whole platter was dissapointing. Everything on there looked like it came out of a jar. A blatant misuse of trade description. I asked a member of staff if our order was correct and assured me it was competitively priced. I could not hide my disappointment and was offered no alternative. I found the staff thin on the ground and bordering on rude. The seating was cramped and inconvenient. To top it all we had drinks on the bill we never ordered, WHEN PAYING THE BILL WITH CASH WE WERE NEARLY SHORT CHANGED BY £10. I want to say that it is an unique establishment in a beautiful surrounding. Fun decor and a very lively atmosphere, sadly we will never return.
