“Beautiful Chateau in the country”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

The location of this Chateau hotel is in the country and a little drive to the Champagne region, make sure you have a good gps system. Our room was one of the rooms on the on the lower floor with the outside deck that was lovely, ours was a smaller room so if you want a deck then ask for the bigger room, the interior has very lovely fabrics. There was a large modern bath with a bath and shower with no walls, also no ventilation, but was not really a big problem but it should have one. Also the lighting in this room is very dark, there needs to be bedside lamps that you can read by instead of the accent lamps they have. I think they should hire someone who knows lighting, the beautiful chandelier in the dinning room was very bright for such beautiful room it was odd and changed the whole mood of the room. Also what I think was the head waiter was very rude to us, at first we thought he was kidding when we asked him if he could dim the chandelier and his response was "Impossible" then walked off and would not look our way for the rest of the night, very strange. Some of the other people in the the dining room saw what happened and even commented later how rude it was of him. One bad apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch for me, the other people that worked there where very friendly, the gentleman that checked us in was very nice and the lady that brought us our breakfast to our deck in the morning was just great and did everything to make us comfortable.
The grounds are amazing with the castle remains to watch at sunset are wonderful and the outside eating area and seating is fantastic. I think they need to also take better care of the landscaping, compared to other places we saw in the area it looks like flower tending in very low on the list there. But the Chateau and the view are lovely.
The reason I gave this place a four and not a three is it is a great place to stop over and relax after the hussle and bussle of Paris. There is a spa with pool and bikes they will let you ride. All I can say it was good, and could be great with a little more attention to detail.

Awesome ? More awful!
We stopped here for 2 nights of rest and relaxation on our way from holidays.
Expensive hotel purporting to be 5 stars but definitely not! Lovely chateau, situation was great. But....
Felt there was a shortage of staff. Manager checked us in and then carried our bags upstairs himself slightly bizarre for 5 stars. Spa was miserable sauna broken, jacuzzi cold and wouldn't heat, swimming pool outdoors full of flies. I complained and the spa manager laughed. I complained in reception, receptionist then went downstairs to turn steam room on. To their credit I was offered a free spa treatment (not my thing) but the spa was cold all I really wanted to do was relax and soak.
Wifi in hotel comes and goes not reliable.
Plumbing was bad hot water was hit and miss. Smell of sewage in corridor awful.
Staff smoked below our window which meant you needed to close window.
No aircon - luckily wasn't too hot.
Restaurant was expensive €59 menu but by this point I had lost confidence and cancelled reservation so can't really comment on food.
Other reviews in different sites are very mixed. Management are very defensive in those but to be honest I felt comments written by reviewers were justified.
In conclusion i would save your money and book elsewhere. Think this place is struggling to survive and the customer is being penalised.

Room Tip: We had room 25 which was very nice but plumbing was veritable and their was a sewage smell in corrid...

Dear Mr. Clark,

Thank you for your comments on our property.

I was pleased to learn that you appreciated the location and room 25 which was renovated last year and benefits from a splendid view over the ruins of the XIIth Century castle.

It was a pleasure for me to welcome you and to show you to your room. It is our honour as Hoteliers to greet our guests and to show them around.

Regarding the spa, it is brand new and very relaxing and boasts a Hammam, a Sauna and a counter-current pool whose temperature is around 29°C. We sincerely apoligise for the low temperature caused by teething problems with the new installation. We did however, offer you a free spa treatment which I hope went some way to compensating for this disagreement.

I was disappointed to see that you did not have the pleasure of discovering, Philippe Colinet, our Chef’s, Cuisine, I hope that you will have the occasion during a future visit. I would like to point out that our 4-course menu costs only 52 € whereas the cheapest menu in the restaurant of your choice is 55 €.

I am sorry that you left our property unsatisfied but in all fairness to our staff, I cannot accept your conclusion.

We welcomed so many guests during the summer at the Château who were totally satisfied and many wrote glowing testimonials in our Guest book or sent very nice, complimentary E-mails after their departure, seldom have we had a review like yours and especially one so insulting to our staff and the property.

Best regards,

Olivier Roussellier

Rooms are not bad. but should be more lux for the price. Ours had too much furniture crammed into a narrow space, stuffy and hot as we entered, full ashtray on the terrace and outdoor furniture in disarray. Dinner was average. Very small fillet steak for the huge price and delivered cold. There were too few veg and frite to compensate for the mean portion of meat. Ordered a respectably expensive bottle of St. Emillion wine at €65, suffered the below par flavour so as to not ruin the ambience of the evening, only to discover the retail price of £10 on the Internet. Disappointing in the middle of wine country!

This is a stunning property that needs a financial investment to keep it going strong for years to come -- Perhaps a national grant or a gift from a patron? Moreover, Whilst we enjoy birds, There is a massive starling bird population that has taken over just about every window on the pool side of the chateau. Pigeons have claimed the roofs and my husband actually had water from one land on his arm. Perhaps the bird droppings are the thing making one sneeze and eyes wate. The pool and fences around it are in massive need of updating and the grounds around the service areas are quite unkempt. These areas are clearly seen from the castle ruins and the back staircase.

This place could be absolutely amazing with a bit more attention to detail, a few updates to the rooms and some de-cluttering. Also, a bit more generosity on the dinner plate. Staff are friendly enough though. We would like to see the chateau do well in the future and hope that the owner can make a few key upgrades.

Great hotel located in lovely country side with its own ruine to explore. The room was comfortable if slightly on the small side. It is an old building so don;t have air con in the room, but opening the window seems to do the job just fine with the beneift of fresh air. There is a outdoor pool, but a bit cold in July to stay in for long. Very nice restaurant with pretty, delicous and yet comfort food. as expected, it has a large range of Champagne to choose from.

We stayed here for 2 nights in August on our way to the alps. Chosen because of the location outdoor pool and it is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels group.
Our room (21) was spacious, seating area with flat screen tv (French channels only). Huge bathroom with spa bath and separate shower. Room overlooks fabulous outdoor pool. The grounds are lovely, enough for our dog to have a good run around. We were also travelling with babies, so used room service and ordered off the restaurant menu as the room service menu is very limited. Tiny niggle that 2 out of the 5 room services we ordered were not exactly right, and the room didn't contain any room service menus, but I am being picky!!
Other reviews are right that this place is isolated, but we were not looking for somewhere close to town. We visited Reims, which was about 40 mins by car away.

Recommend this for a lovely stop off/detour which is what the other guests staying seemed to be doing too, or as a base for exploring the region, if you don't mind everything being a bit of a drive away.

Fantastic hotel with a great history! Although the location might be off the beaten track it is certainly worth staying here. The  drive to the hotel is great as it suddenly appears with the ruins of an old castle next door. The superior room we had booked  seems recently refurbished and had a brilliant outside patio where we had our private dinner. The food is fantastic and sorry we ordered room service - should have experienced this kind of food in the restaurant! There were a couple of little things - on arrival we noticed there were no towels in the room (?), once you had a shower in the fantastic bathroom it flooded also the toilet next to it (but staff was happy to clean this), we were given our drinks with our meals but the bottle of water was not opened and no opener in sight. All in all these little things don't matter if you enjoy the ambience of this fantastic hotel. Would I go back to this hotel? Certainly will - have already booked for next week - so more to follow....

Dear Mr. Van Schie,

Thank you so much for your comment regarding your last week's stay.
It is always a pleasure to hear such nice things concerning the Château de Fère.
I am glad that you enjoyed the room n°5, very large room (45 m²) with shower and bath and it's little terrace on which has been served your late dinner.
We will be so pleased to welcome you again nex week.
Looking forward to welcoming you again,

Kind regards,

loved every second! very romantic - we took a picnic and a bottle of wine to the table overlooking the castle ruins...one of my favorite memories of the trip. The chateau staff was wonderful and we also enjoyed all the peacocks wandering the grounds...magical!
