Just back from one night at Shalai. By no means is the town an attraction but it is very easy to get to Taromina and if you wanted to do some excursion to Etna you are well located. The palace has been beautifully restored and our room had an amazing fresco. It is certainly an excellent blend of old and new and it certainly has the right balance of chic and cozy. The room size was good, the bed was huge and EXTREMELY comfortable. Could hear cars in the night but not loud enough to keep you awake (my baby son did that well). What stood out to me was the extremely helpful and polite staff. No matter what we asked, they assisted with a smile and were very efficient. The spa is small but does have enough features to make for a relaxing few hours. My treatment today was excellent and I am not an easy person to please when it comes to spa treatments also well priced for the service and products. The breakfast was excellent but definitely on the Italian side of lots of sweet baked good. The dinner we did a set price menu and the portions were a fair size. Also being lucky to have eaten at many nice restaurants in Sicily, I would say the meal was good but does not fall into the memorable camp though they have an excellent selection of wines to choose from. The only 2 grips would be that the Wifi should be free (charged 10 euro for 24 hours) though Sicily is a bit behind in that area and that they charged me to use the spa general facilities before my treatment (15 euros) which I think if you are having a treatment the sauna etc should be gratis. For a couple it makes for a nice place to spend a weekend if you want to chill and do a bit of touring. I think calling it a resort is a bit of a push as there are no grounds, view etc just a lovely restored palace with a nice cozy spa. Great service, beautiful building and excellent spa sums it up.
