“Worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2012

Spent a couple of days there, it is a nice hotel. Service is great, the staff is very friendly.
Hotel room was comfortable. It was within walking distance of my work.
Town has a small centre, good enough for a short visit (not spectacular)

When I come back to Boxmeer I'll definitely stay there

Stayed for business, as there is precious little else in the immediate area to stay at.

I had been advised that my stay would be a 'unique' experience, and the advice was not incorrect. As a conversion hotel from an old convent, there is a substantial amount of charm and quirkiness to this hotel that you won't find elsewhere. However, the conversion process also lends itself to a lot of compromises for a hotel setup.

For example - no elevator! At least I could not locate it. So lugging up 2 large suitcases becomes a chore when the stairs are steep and the staircase winds. Doorways are very small, and although there is a deadbolt lock on each room, the doors themselves seem very week and insubstantial. Perhaps crime/theft is not an issue in the area, but it's still nice to know your door can't be kicked down if someone wanders onto the grounds and decides to go 'shopping'.

The room itself is very nicely sized, but very sparsely decorated with minimal furniture. The desk provided allows for precious little room to actually work. The bed, although fantastically soft, is actually two twin beds pushed together, so if you decide to sleep in the middle, well, you'll be on the floor very quickly as they're wheeled! Inevitably you end up sleeping on the one half, rendering your full size bed to a single.

Bathroom was clean, albeit very small, and the shower was fantastic - lots of pressure, lots of hot water - no complaints here.

Had dinner one night at the downstairs onsite restaurant and found it pretentious and overall just not very good for the very high prices they are asking. Perhaps it was an off night.

Staff are generally not interested in being helpful and will provide the bare minimum information when asked a question. All speak very good English.

Overall, the stay was comfortable minus the few quibbles, but this hotel is really coasting on the fact that it's a 'destination' and that there is very little competition in Boxmeer itself.

The atmosphere is certainly different! The tour on the premises was two thumbs up! (Every Saturday at 14h., costs 4,75 or included in hotel- offer) Really entertaining, very interesting!! Also: the dinner we had, no complaints at all! The lounge- bar was cozy, the different kinds of tastings (beer, whisky) a great gesture and the barfood inexpensive. The staff is really pleasant and attentive.

On the downside: the bathroom was small and there were not nearly enough shelves, no closetspace to neatly hang trousers etc. The beds were set on wheels, on a wooden floor, two matresses on top of each other, so the beds kept rolling apart... Roller-blinds did not suffice... please get some proper drapes for the bedrooms!

Breakfast was okay, but maybe scrambled eggs or an omelet would be nice. As for the juice: some proper O.J. would be nice, instead of the orangy lemonade...

Unfortunately they added some drinks on the bill that were included in the hotel-offer, but they removed it as soon as we noticed this mistake. Another drink they had promissed us at the end of the tour, was never provided...

All and all, a nice stay, but don't expect to much of Boxmeer as a town.

We were there with a group of friends two weeks ago (4 couples).
It is on old building and they kept the historic details, beautiful! We had dinner there, very good. Spend the evening in the bar (playing cards), had a pleasant bar tender.

Breakfast was okay, service overall is very good.

Located in central Boxmeer this former convent has been sensitively converted to an hotel full of charm and atmosphere. The rooms are simple and clean and no doubt the nuns would have appreciated the luxury of the modern en-suite facilities. The restaurant is excellent. There is no menu and the chefs prepare what they want for you. Let them know if you have any specific dislikes and then just choose how many courses you want. Recommend you don't go for a bottle of wine - just leave them to match a glass of wine to each dish. The staff were great and I would definitely stay here again.

We booked in for a two night stay to visit the war grave of my uncle at nearby Venray.

Very interesting building with well fitted rooms. Staff could not do enough for us. Late night barman was particularly good company.

If I have a need to visit that part of Holland again I will be back, or may even visit when the restaurant opens in October.

Many thanks to all the helpful staff.

This is a really old monestry which has been totally refurbished, maintaining the good things of the past. The rooms were just renovated - very nice atmosphere, modern style, great flatscreens. Bathrobe free of charge.

  • Liked — the atmosphere of the monestry
  • Disliked — no reception at night
