“Wonderful vacation, but do the research”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

I just returned from the Iberostar Rose Hall Beach and I cannot stop raving about this experience!

Let me get the negative out of the way first so I can talk about all of the positives of the trip. When you book, be aware this property has 3 levels, the Beach Resort, the Suites Resort and the Grand. The Beach resort is the lowest of the 3 levels, the Grand includes butler service and deluxe ammenties. If you are staying at the Beach resort, you will not be able to participate in any of the activities at the other properties (with the exception of the nightclubs and the Spa).

Now that that's out of the way, here are the details:

Guests: There were a mix of families and couples and both seemed to be enjoying themselves. In the 4 days I was there, I saw 2 weddings so this is definitely a destination hotel.

Room: Standard resort fare. Beautiful balconies on all rooms and great views from almost every room in the hotel. The beds are a bit hard, but not terrible. Depending on when you arrive, you may be able to get a free upgrade so be sure to ask (several people were upgraded to the suites because fo overbooking).

Food/Drinks: This property truly is all-inclusive, no issues with getting food/drink day or night. Room service is avaiable 11AM-11PM and there are 3 restaurants on property and a buffet 3 times/day in addition to a snack shack on the beach. As with most all-inclusives drinks are well liquor (with a few exceptions at the Lobby bar which provided the strongest drinks) and not the best, but hey if you have enough of them by the pool, they taste great. As for the restaurants, there wasn't one that stood out for me, but be sure to make your reservations during the 9AM hour; they don't broadcast it, but that is the only time slot where you can make reservations for the same day as well as the following.

Pool/Beach: Pool is GORGEOUS and plenty of chairs. Great service for drinks. Only qualm was you are only allowed 1 towel and they are VERY strict about this. Beach was beautiful as well. Service was slower, but still existed. Lots of huts/chairs available and unlike many properties, people didn't hoard the chairs from the wee morning hours. Music was played by the pool and traveled down to the beach.

Activities: The staff was fantastic at keeping to the activity schedule which was jam packed. Activities are repeated almost every day, but there are lots of fun things to do. Favorites were the Beach Party on Saturday (with a yummy BBQ) and water aerobics at noon daily. Non-motorized water sports are included for 1 hr daily and there are nightly activities at the theater.

Other: There is no free wi-fi at this hotel (I know, crazy right?) and wi-fi is truly only avaialble in the lobby area or you can have wired internet access at the internet cafe. Rates are pretty high for both. The are professional photographers all around the property who will try to sell you prints (think cruise ship) at the end of your trip. They take great photos and were worth the price tag.

Room Tip: All rooms have at least a partial oceanview and the room that we initially had with a full oceanview...

We were worried after reading some negative comments left but we seriously had no problems and loved every minute of our stay! Front desk staff were welcoming, we were early so they suggested we go ahead and eat lunch while they were preparing the room. Beautiful resort, very clean, great buffet--a lot of choices, awesome location, fun activities dailynight, great service on the beach (Patrice our server on the beach was very nice to us). No tips were ever expected from staff. Room were execelllent. We plan to return

This hotel is all about activities and partying, and not relaxing peace and quiet. The hotel has wonderful shade trees (sea grapes and almonds) on the beach to lounge under and is the only fairly quiet place you'll find. The pool area is loud, with music at a very high volume all 4 days that we were there. Nightly music until 11 pm on the beach (after midnight on one night) and wedding parties every night ruin an early night to bed, so get a room not facing the beach or inner courtyard. The activities are non-stop and the staff does a really great job; all water activities are included. Book the restaurants early because they fill up fast. If you like loud and non-stop things to do, this place is for you. With children and want to relax, avoid the hotel at all costs; check out the Iberostar Suites next door.

The resort is by no means a luxury resort but does offer good value for the relatively little it costs. In sum, it was better than we expected.

First - an initial comment. The main negative about this resort is purely the lack of information available on the website and from the hotel while there. If you read the questions/reviews/ complaints on this site, nearly all of them stem from not having known about hotel rules and policies ahead of time, whether it be the policy about use of the sister hotels, how many times you can visit a la cartes, how restaurant reservations are made, what the dress codes are, letting cruise ships and local residents buy day passes to the facilities, etc. This could be so easily remedied by making this information available online and yet the resort doesn't care enough to do it or do it well (for example, the website lists all restaurants but only gives hours and dress codes for some of them; even when you check in, you are given materials about the hotel policies but in 2 pages they contain conflicting information about dress codes). There is also no good way to get a sense of the hotel amenities - the hotel offers a shuttle to various places, but you have to hunt down this information for yourself. The resort is entitled to make any rules it wants, but it really is inexcusable not to make them easily accessible. People are happier when they know what to expect and are not surprised. (Luckily, we had read the T.A. reviews so we knew what to expect).

Rooms. We reserved (through Expedia) an oceanfront suite with two double beds. On arrival, we were given a suite with a king bed and told by the porter that there are no suites with two beds. This left my kids on a REALLY uncomfortable pull-out couch, but we were only there for a few days so we just moved on. Our air-conditioning worked fine (but it was a cold week) and we had a slight musty smell in the room but nothing really problematic. Our bed was comfortable, maid service was excellent and the minibar was filled daily and towels changed several times each day. The balcony was lovely and the oceanfront view was worth it.

Pool/Beach Chairs. We were there during Spring Break when the resort was crowded and we had no problems finding chairs. No one was jumping up and reserving them early - we could get our pick of chairs when we arrived after breakfast (around 9) and even people arriving the afternoon had chairs available. The pool was huge and the kids loved it. The first day there were some really drunk people at the swim-up bar -- as in, falling over drunk, couldn't get out of pool, etc. - but we did not see that again.

Service/Star Friends. Everyone was really, really friendly. We expected to find the Star Friends annoying (we are not the types to chat with strangers) but they were much lower key than some reviews suggest. This is not a quiet resort - there are definitely many activities going on at all times, following a daily published schedule (beach soccer, volleyball, water basketball, reggae dance lessons, etc) - but by no means was anyone forced to participate and they were not at all disruptive. My younger daughter (age 11) enjoyed all the games tremendously. Thunda was especially great with her and he has some amazing dance (and soccer) skills! The lead Star Friend, however (who appears to be the only one not from Jamaica) is just awful.. he spends most of his time making extremely sexist and inappropriate comments to guests and being rude and condescending to the other Star Friends.

Food. Well... this is an all-inclusive and it was about what we anticipated. There is a large variety of foods and it is available at all hours but none of it was very good. The a la carte reservations were indeed a pain to get - long line to get them and bad times available- but we went to the steakhouse and it was one of our better meals.

Drinks. They were available everywhere - there are bars all over the resort - and the bartenders are friendly and great. Most of the drinks are sickening sweet rum drinks, but I guess that is the thing. Wine was terrible and when we tried to get a more standard drink (gin and tonic) there was a very "off" taste to it - maybe something with the tonic water? We gave up and drank the rum drinks and beer.

Tipping. We tipped everyone generously but we were NEVER asked for a tip by anyone. Everyone we tipped seemed genuinely appreciative to receive it. It was amazing to us how many people were not tipping at all, ever, even while being particularly demanding.

Excursions. The hotel has tons of information about the various excursions available. We had terrible weather so stayed at the resort but many of them looked great. We did do a night time tour of the Great House - they run a haunted tour at night that was really fun. The hotel tour desk set it up and the guide arrived right on time, organized our tickets when we arrived, etc.

Overall - we would come back. It is no luxury resort but it cost next to nothing and the kids really liked the fun atmosphere. Next time I might plan more meals outside the resort despite the all-inclusive nature.

We took a family vacation to Jamaica and fell upon Iberostar as a nice resort in the heart of Montego Bay. The facility was fantastic and the food good. What impressed us was the cleanliness of the rooms and facility. The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff was also amazing! I never do this, but was so impressed by the staff I wanted to recognize a few of them: Barbi on the beach and pool was exceptional and will teach you Jamaican and care to your needs. Lovenne is the sweetest girl you will find who works all over the hotel and will get your drinks to your liking and yes- will also teach you Jamaican! Sunny is the lobby bartender in the mornings and makes the most amazing Bloody Marys and other drinks and will make you laugh in the process. In Uncle Tony’s Steak House you will meet Marlon who may not smile all the time, but will go above and beyond to ensure your satisfaction. Marlon also had an enormous amount of pride for his team working in the restaurant. While there you will grow to appreciate how hard the staff works to ensure customer satisfaction and a fun experience.
The pool and beach were always kept immaculate and although it became a challenge to find some shade by the pool because of some chair saving we were very impressed with everything.
My children were 10 and 9 and did not want to go to the kids club because the facility is more focused towards smaller children, however, the two ladies working there immediately bonded with my kids, included them in activities at the appropriate levels, and in the end my children just wanted to be in the Kids Club and formed strong bonds with the exceptional ladies working there.
Kids have a great opportunity to play with other children in and around the pool and our kids met a wonderful young lady from Canada. We ended up befriending the parents as well and enjoyed the ability to meet people from around the world and share in good times.
The Buffet was exceptional and Uncle Tony’s by the Beach is also good. After a week even the good food gets a little old but that is at every resort. This place offered three restaurants that required reservations and for you to dress up a little bit to attend. The Japanese restaurant was fun and worth it. Uncle Tony’s turns into a steak house at night and is also very good. The Cajun Restaurant “Jambalaya” was not worth it! Eat at one of the other restaurants an extra night or go off site. The food was not very New Orleans style and on both occasions we ate there it took us over an hour to get our entrée. Not to mention the ambiance was not the greatest.
We did several tours on Jamaica Tours Unlimited and were extremely impressed with all of the tour guides and the timeliness at which the busses operated. The hotels and this tour group operate very well with one another. Although the tours are expensive you are well taken care of. Besides Dunn Rivers Falls our other favorite was the Rose Hall Ghost Tour. I have never been on such a fun tour, just do it at night 
In summary, Iberostar hotel Jamaica facility was excellent, the staff exceptional, and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a vacation in Montego Bay with their family.

Dear Guest,

On the behalf of the staff and management of the Iberostar Beach Resort and Spa, we want to say thank for your review. We are delighted to hear that we managed to impress you with our property, rooms, delicious food, staff and service. It is our intention to ensure that each guest leaves our property feeling satisfied as our symbol represent a STAR but shows that our Guest are true Stars. For this reason, we believe in going the extra mile to ensure that all our guests’ needs are met. When we receive such comments we are given an opportunity to assess and evaluate our performance, and thrive to maintain and deliver the level of service expected from our Hotel.

It was also encouraging to learn that you had been impressed with the service given by our waitress Lovenne, Bartender Sunny, Waiter Marlon and your star friend Barbie. I will pass on your comments to the Manager of each department, so they can pass it to the staff. The best reward that we can give for all the hard work our employees do, is to give all these compliments so they know that they are in the right path and keep with the hard work.
Please be assured that we will be looking into how we can improve our food and service in the Cajun “ Jambalaya” Restaurant and we sincerely apologies for the situation you had encountered regarding your entrée. Your comments about the food not been New Orleans style was also noted and we will certainly pass on your comment to the Executive Chef. Nevertheless we are exultant that our Japanese and Steakhouse were able to satisfy your needs.

We look forward to serving you again soon, therefore we wish to remind you that when next you are planning a vacation – to make it the Iberostar Rose Hall Beach Resort and Spa.

We booked through Apple Vacations and traveled to Iberostar Rose Hall Beaches in Jamaica at the end of March, the following is our experience at the resort.

Arrival and Check in:
Apple vacations met us at the airport and provided us a prepaid private transfer to the resort. It is approximately 15-20 minutes from the Sangster Airport in Montego Bay. Once we arrived at the hotel we were greeted by the front desk lady and started our check in process pretty quickly, as well as offered a drink. We were travelling with a toddler and have reserved 2 rooms and requested them to be connected to each other. I have sent an email as well to the hotel a week prior to our arrival to confirm my request, but have not received any replies. The lady at the front desk was pleasant and gave us 2 rooms on the third floor, next to each other, which was refreshing – not having to fight for rooms. As we got to our rooms, we found out they were not connected at all, they were just adjacent. Since were with a child it was important to have the rooms connected, so we went back downstairs and asked again for connected rooms. At that point a manager, Nadia, at the front desk took over telling me that there are no interconnected rooms available until 2 days from now or I can pay $400 a night for an upgrade for a Presidential suite. After going back and forth, I went to the Tour desk and spoke with Taneisha, our Apple rep, who within 5 minutes made a call to the Director of the Reception and got us a connected room.

------------------------------------------------------
A Message for the Quality Manager of Iberostar Hotels in Jamaica: Everyone at the hotel, from maids to maintenance to servers had a great attitude, very friendly and helpful. Your front desk staff, namely above are the face of your hotel and they treat customers with disrespect, as if we are a bother. Perhaps you may invest some time into training your front desk personal to be more like everyone else at the hotel. You may also want to stop by this hotel as well, for some suggestions from guests and solve problems before they occur, not only in the Grand Hotel next door.
--------------------------------------------------------
Rooms:

The rooms are good size with a balcony. The only difference between these rooms in the Beaches and the rooms in the Suites is that the Suites have a slightly larger room with a step called a “Junior Suite”, it is still a single room, not a suite. The refrigerator was not working in one of the rooms, AC broke twice in room one and once in the other room, but was quickly rectified with a call and a maintenance person fixed everything without a problem. The room was clean and was cleaned every day very well, mini fridge refilled every 2 days as well.

Food:

There is a main buffet at the beaches, where they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. The variery is good and one should always find something they would like. There’s also a beach restaurant called Tony’s, where one may grab lunch or snack in the afternoon. There are also 3 specialty restaurants on this property, Japanese, Cajun and the steakhouse. The Steakhouse was very good, and the service was excellent. The Cajun was so-so, with a very slow service. We have not visited the Japanese. To make a reservation you have to visit a main lobby and wait until one gentleman arrives that makes all the reservations for all the guests at the hotel, this may take some time. Compared to the Suites, they have a concierge at each building making reservations. There are also grills on the beach a few times a week making hot dogs and burgers as a snack during the day.

Beach/Pool:

Depending on the weather, the water is clear and you may snorkel right of the beach. It did rain for a day and a half during our stay, so the water turned murky with some seaweed, but that’s just due to the weather and the tide. There are also some ants on the seaweed in the water that may bite, so if you get bit you mean see a red mark, ask a lifeguard for a cortisone cream, it should get better within a few hours. The pool is not heated, therefore it is colder on a cloudy day, yet it does have a bar and it is an infinity pool. If you go for the beach, I would suggest finding a hotel in Negril.

Internet:

It is only available at the lobby at very low speeds of about 1mb/s, and is not free. $2 – 30 minutes, $4 – hour, etc. It is free in the Suites next door, if you decide to book there.

Staff:

Except the front desk, everyone is very friendly and willing to help. The STARS work very hard, and try to involve everyone in games and activities, yet not very pushy. We enjoyed the Pirate Beach Party for the kids, it was a lot of fun.

Overall, we would come back and recommend this resort to others. We did visit the Suites, it is a nicer property, but in my opinion not worth the upgrade. I would personally put the front desk staff to do landscaping so they are out of the way and have the servers and bartenders man the front desk, they always smile and are very helpful.

Room Tip: We had a ground floor room, it was quiet and very close to the pool and the beach.
