“Did Not Live up to the Hype”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

I was at this hotel and found it to be a dissapointment. I had a better time at a Montego Bay villa, Serendipity. The difference between a villa such as Serendipity and a hotel is that at a villa you have your own butler, your own maid, your own cook, your own gardner, your own laundress, and 7500 square feet of living space for the same value as only 2 hotel rooms. Did I say that at Serendipity you get your own pool? You get the picture. The view at Serendipity is to die for.

Iberostar is nice but crowded. You had to eat breakfast by 11 AM. In contrast, at Serendipity you eat whenever you want and whatever you want, wearing whatever you want!

I would not go back to Iberostar simply because when you travel with family, you want to be together. Serendipity allowed me to travel and stay together in

because it provided 6 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms. Serendipityjamaica.com and see for yourself.

My wife and I have mediocre standards when it comes to traveling. I wouldn't call us uppity travelers but we still expect to get treated to great service and good food.

Well, the Iberostar Rise Hall didn't hit either of these points:
1. Food: It was horrible. Think cafeteria food. Heat Lamps. Non-tasty. Reused from the day before. We ate because we had to. By the fifth day of it, our bodies started rejecting it. The Wendy's meal we had in the airport on the way out was the best meal of the trip. Cajun restaurant would be the best of the three evils, though.

2. Customer No Service: Unbelievable. Truly unbelievable. These people didn't give a lick about you, your vacation, or any of your inquiries or issues. Their attitude will blow your mind!! Maybe it's the island-way but I don't understand how Jamaican people can be so rude, ignorant, and down-right mean and get away with it. Especially when I know the resort jobs are coveted by the locals. Why can they not get more appreciative locals in there to make the customer service better. When push comes to shove, you will get ZERO service unless they islander is in a position where a tip is possible (bartender, entertainment leader, bellhop, etc). All others (front desk staff, cafeteria staff, tour guide staff) don't care about you.

My only hat tip goes to LavaGirl (entertainment), Lovene, and Ricardo (bartender)... they actually smiled and genuinely gave good customer service.

All in all, the pool is acceptable. The beach is acceptable. The room was acceptable (if you can get by the musty-ness... our's stayed cool unlike others' reviews). All other components of this place is unacceptable. I will never be back to Iberostar Anything (Beach, Suites, Blah, Blah, Blah) nor will I ever be back to Jamaica. With as many Caribbean and Mexican destinations out there, why would you pick Jamaica? It's run down, poverty laden, and the people aren't appreciative of anything. 1434 Tripadvisor Reviews can't be wrong. Go elsewhere.

I'll gladly take questions via email and I will be blatantly honest and unbiased.

Room Tip: Pick one at a different resort.

My sister and I traveled here together for a girl's getaway. We were upgraded to the presidential suite which was very nice, however one of the bathrooms is in desperate need of an upgrade. I wore my shoes in the shower due to the floor appearing to be very unclean. The toilet area smelled of urine the entire time as well. Other than that, the room was more than adequate, the air worked well, and we did not have the smell everyone else complained of. Everyone here is really pleasant and helpful. The men here can be overwhelming at times with the flirting, but not disrespectful. Any question was answered immediately. They truly work hard as well to keep the grounds clean and keep you entertained. It was always something going on. The bartenders are the best as well. We took a sailboat ride with a captain from the beach and had the best experience ever!! Kevin, you are the best!! The food was so, so. Breakfast was the worst to us. Limited meat options and the pet milk was a bit of a major turn off. The rest of the meals were hit or miss and repeated the same foods. We did do the Japanese restaurant one night, and well, just don't expect US quality and you should be fine. Overall we had the best tip ever! Our highlight being the Disco at the suites, the sailboat ride, and zip lining in Montego bay! That was awesome and they are so friendly and fun! I highly recommended for anyone! Would we stay again?, No because of the food issue, but everything else was great.

Facility, pool, and hotel room is very nice, food is pretty good. Be prepared to tip for drinks or your service is very poor at the pool, especially if you are a woman. Keep track of your beach towel, or better yet, bring your own. If you misplace it, it's $10. Our towels kept disappearing as other guests would take them to avoid $10 fee. My husband lost his wrist band the first day and we were told it would be $50. So don;t lose anything, even room keys, because they don't accept any excuses-not customer oriented in that way.

We came back today and i had been reading the reviews from this Hotel and want to put in my comments as well the hotel is a 20 min ride from the airport if you don't have to stop along the way for the other resorts to drop off other guests, We didn't have any promblem checking in but when arrived at the room there was a musty smell and the A/C didn't take care of, the trick of closing the door to the hall worked and cooled the room quickly, the second day I went to the front desk to let them know the sink in our room was draining verry slowly no one came to take care of it will we were there, the ref was only filled up once, you are very limited in the resturants I thought the meals were good not great, out of frest fruit alot or not ripe, I would go back but only if I up-grade to the suites, We tryed to go to the suites be was asked to leave. also we did have a outlet in our room that was pulled out from the wall, Overall we had a good time most of it at the beach closes at 5:00 and Pool at 7;00 why??? Room 1233

This was my first trip to Jamaica, and this resort made that an amazing experience for me and my girlfriends!! The 4 of us stayed there for 5 days. I was in room 2323, which had an AWESOME view of the pool AND ocean!

Staff: The staff was super friendly and easygoing. I was nervous about this aspect after reading prior reviews, but we had no issues whatsoever. Towels/Bar replenished promptly, as quickly as needed. They catered to our every needs and even most of our silly requests. They have different people for every aspect of your experience. A dinner reservation person, a tour attraction person, etc. Never a long line or long wait ANYWHERE!! Everyone was professional and FUN!!!

Food: There is a buffet where you can go to for any meal (during most times of the day/night) without making a reservation. PLENTY of seating in the buffet, helpful wait staff, and quite a variety! We also made reservations at 2 of the specialty restaurants -the Cajun grille and the Steakhouse. Both were REALLY tasty, and a nice change of pace from the buffet. Please ignore prior complaints about reservations filling up too fast, or short time frames to make reservations. You can visit the reservation desk during 2 hour time frames, several times throughout the day. (Ex. 9a-11a, 1p-3p, 5p-7p) We didn't come to Jamaica to sit around and eat...we came to party! With that being said, the meal selections served its purpose, and more.

Property: The hotel was clean and lively. The beach and restaurants ALWAYS had seating available. The pool was clean. The staff spent a lot of time cleaning and organizing, to ensure a comfortable stay. THE HOTEL WAS BOOKED TO CAPACITY DURING OUR STAY. The Reggae Sumfest was going on during our stay, which made me nervous about encountering big crowds. Iberostar was the main sponsor too. In all honesty, I DID NOT feel as though the hotel was booked to capacity, which I appreciated.

There are 2 other properties (The Suites and The Grand) but they are not nearly as lively and fun as the Beach property! Maybe couples would enjoy the other 2, more subtle properties.
We took advantage of the free snorkeling lessons, which proved very beneficial during our Booze Cruise (go to the tourist desk and BOOK THE BOOZE CRUISE!!- BOOK IT!)

Overall, we had an amazing time! We're already making plans to go back (to Iberostar Beach Hall) and we haven't been home a week yet!! When we return, we will definitely be staying at this resort!! ***On a side note, our flight was overbooked, so the airline offered us an extra night's stay at a different resort. We gladly accepted, as our departure from Jamaica felt as though it came too soon. Upon arriving at the 2nd resort, we immediately realized a drop in quality from Iberostar. Everything from the staff, to the upkeep of the rooms/grounds, to the food, to the below average drink sizes was lower tier. Luckily, we were only there one night. We even felt sorry for those who spent their entire vacation at this property.****

I only have 4 (SMALL) gripes.

1. No swimsuits at the beach buffet, which is right on the beach. You have to be covered on the top and bottom, with shoes. But no worries, mon! I stepped around the side and turned my beach towel into a dress in no time!
2. Speaking of beach towels. When you check in, you get towel card, good for one beach towel. There's a towel stand at the resort, where you trade your card for a towel. You can swap out as many times as you want, or just retrieve your card if you want. The downer is that the stand closes at 6pm. Every night, we were stuck lugging wet beach towels to our rooms. But NO WORRIES, mon! After quite a few shots, the towels became a non-factor! :) Oh yeah, lose your card (or your towel) - $10.
3. The humidity in the room. Here's the thing...the rooms are motion/temperature regulated, as a (clever) means of conserving energy on the facility. If you are out of your room for an extended period of time, the air will shut off. If you leave your balcony door open the entire time (like we did) the air will shut off. When the air shuts off, your room will feel like a tropical rainforest, and it DOES get a moldy smell. It was weird at first, but we came to the conclusion that we MUST have the balcony open (for that amazing view) - plus it added to the experience... :-)
4. There are no bars open on the premises after around 1 or 2-ish. This was a downer at first, but we turned lemons into lemonade by doubling up at final call! :)

Tips: Bring soap, shampoo, sunscreen. Jamaican money seemed to stretch a little further in the long run. Ask a taxi to take you to some REAL Jamaican spots (outside of the tourist area.) Go to The Pork Pit and Margaritaville. Ladies, leave your cute stilettos at home. We opted out of full room service, except for towel replenishes. We still kept all valuables in the room safe. Take advantage of all of the free water sports on the resort. Ask Steve the bartender to make you a Bob Marley drink. Go to the Disco nightclub on the resort. Bring insect repellant if you plan on watching the sunrise on the beach, like we did. GO ON THE BOOZE CRUISE! Tip your servers!
Travel Dates: 18-23 July 2012

Room Tip: 2323 (3rd floor, excellent view of ocean and pool/beach bar) 2326 (excellent ocean view ONLY)

I'm glad I didn't let some of the negative reviews on this site dissuade me from choosing the Rose Hall Beach resort. It was a great place for my family with college-age and older children to vacation. The rooms were spacious; the grounds were immaculate. The swim-up bar and beach wait staff meant that no matter where we wanted to swim, the service was good. I'm in the midst of a pretty strict diet, and I was very pleased with the large selection of healthy options at every meal. I also liked the fact that local specialties were offered too. I read some of the complaints on this site and just shook my head. No palm trees by the beach? No, but they are all around the pool and the beach itself has great shade available due to all the other types of trees. Cats by the food? Oh, please. There were some cute kittens wrestling in the bushes outside the buffet doors, and one occasionally wandered through the lounge chairs during the day. Limited food selection? If you missed the large buffet for breakfast or lunch, I'll admit the choices were pretty similar every day at the outdoor restaurant, but there were still dozens of dishes. No lounge chairs? If you didn't snag one in the shade at the pool by 9:00, you still had plenty of choices, although they might be in the sun or on the beach.

I will say that if I had young children, I would have only swum in the half of the pool that did not contain the bar or at the beach. Iberostar can't control the jerk quota by the bar. Some days, people were nice and friendly; other days, there was a high "bro" factor and obscene bellows were the rule.

There were a few irritants. We were told the minibar would be restocked every two days, but ours was never restocked over 4 nights. Don't look for American-style icicle air-conditioning anywhere on the property (not usually my highest priority, but it IS hot outdoors and I needed a break now and then). I've never been somewhere that sells photos taken of clients that was LESS interested in taking photos and making them available. I literally had to beg photographers to come and take family photos. And don't think if you go to the Mr. Iberostar show and don't volunteer that you will be spared humiliation. Women were competing to be onstage but then were sent out to collect as many men's shirts as they could...and the guys couldn't get them back until they tried to "seduce" the women onstage. We never went back to another show after that first night.

That said, if you are looking for a decent value, friendly staff, good food, and beautiful views, I think you'll enjoy this resort.
