My boyfriend and I (we are both in our 20's) just got back from 5 days at Rose Hall. We booked through Liberty Travel which made it easy and hassle free.
Hotel: The lobby is spacious with lounge seats so even when you are checking in it does not become over crowded. The room was perfect for what we needed, the bathroom did not have too much counter space but I used the divider to put my hair and makeup supplies. The bed was soooo comfortable and I had a great nights sleep. My boyfriend did not like how fluffy the pillows were. The tv was a fairly new flat screen with plenty of channels (including hbo). The only downfall was the temperature of the water in the rooms. Some days we would not get any hot water or if someone flushed or was using water in another room (I am guessing) the water suddenly went to freezing and then scolding hot.
Service: I believe this is my only real complaint. I had luckily read may tripadvisor reviews before we left and was already aware of the slow service. I do not know if it is just the mentality of Jamaica but the employees at the bars and some food areas were not as friendly as I have experienced in other hotels. They were in no way mean but I am used to people who work in hotels wanting to go above and beyond. I believe this is partially due to the hotel being all inclusive and them not being tipped very well. My advice: we were not able to but try to be consistent with which bartender you use and tip! Also when the server comes around the first time at Fresh (the buffet) order what you want to drink because it takes forever for them to come by again.
Food/Restaurants: We were really happy with the food. Fresh is the buffet...breakfast always had an omelet station and someone would be making fresh french toast and pancakes. Dinners there were also pretty good. I would stick with the station that either did a build your own stir fry or pasta station. Mangos is the restaurant by the lazy river pool. That has your typical bar food...burgers/wraps/etc. Seaside grill does both lunch and dinner. We ate lunch there twice, I loved their fried conch and tuna salad.
Reservation restaurants: you can call the hotel and make the reservations ahead of time. we did not know this and if you want to eat dinner before 8:30 then make sure to call.
--> Seaside Grill: This is the restaurant near the main pool and right next to the ocean. We enjoyed our meal
--> Three Palms: you take a van to the golf course. If you go in the summer months my suggestion is to sit inside, we became very hot after 30 minutes of being outdoors, you do not have the breeze like you do by the ocean. The bisque was delicious. Great service, we had 4 servers come up to us within 10 minutes.
-->Luna del Mar: was italian and within the hotel. It was actually my least favorite out of the three, I ordered the turkey-balls and spaghetti but found it to be blah. Really good deserts. We had great service here too.
Pools/Water: There are two pools at the hotel. One is a basic rectangular pool that you see right outside the hotel. The second is a long winded pool with a lazy river. It also has two slides, one for the tubes and then a body slide. It also has a swim up bar. Some of the comments left on this site said you had to get up around 6:30 to get a good spot at the pool. I ended up doing that on the first day but realized no one was awake yet!. You should be able to get a good spot by the lazy river if you go down around 7:30. The big pool we went down around 8:30/9 and were able to get chairs in the sun. You might have a more difficult time if you want an umbrella.
Ocean: People have complained that the ocean is rocky. Those people have no idea what rocky really means. As you walk in about 5 long steps you start to feel big smoothed out rocks. They do not hurt you just have to be careful as you walk but no water shoes are necessary since they are not sharp. If you continue walking you will move past them. My only complaint was that it did not get that deep for a while. My boyfriend is not a beach person so we only went in once.
Excursions: we were on a little bit of a budget so the only time we left the hotel was to go on the Chukka Zipline Tour. It only took about 15 minutes to get to the site and went through 7 different zipline traverses. I had a great time and still had time by the pool. We were picked up at 10:15 (you can chose different times) and back by 2. Make sure to bring money for tips and 25 dollars to get the photo cd (7 pictures). We had heard that other people liked going to Dunn's River.
If you have made it to the end of this I congratulate you for being so patient but hope this is helpful.
