Just returned from a 4 night stay 7/25-7/29. We're a family of 5 w/20, 22 & 24 yr old 'kids'. This was a quick get-away to spend some family time together. If we had more time available to stay, I would have chosen a different resort (probably the Iberostar Grand), but after reading the reviews (good & bad), for the price, the Hilton seemed 'adequate' for our purpose this trip. 'Adequate' is the best I can say. It is a great place for families w/young kids and tweens/teens. Lazy river & slides are perfect for those age groups. The check-in process started off poorly for us because although I had specified numerous times via email confirmation communication, we needed 2 rooms w/king beds and 1 w/2 queens, at check-in we were told only rooms w/king beds were available. (Getting 3 rooms was actually more economical than a suite.) Fortunately, our kids like each other & 2 of them didn't mind sleeping in the same bed. No apologies were made, nor upgrades offered (and we are Hilton Honors members). The first thing we noticed on our way to the rooms was the overwhelming smell of mold/mildew. This property is seriously outdated in every way- the decor is straight out of an episode of Mad Men (which wouldn't be a bad thing if it was maintained properly)- and although it is clean (at least in the visible sense of the word), everything is simply old. The rooms were clean and a nice size. 2 of them connected and the other was 1 door down the hall. Bathrooms were small- 1 in particular was downright tiny, w/the door just clearing the toilet when opened- but they were clean as well and everything functioned properly. The nicest parts of all 3 rooms were the lanais. These were ocean front rooms as opposed to ocean view, so they had lovely ground level, private patios w/gated, private walkways leading to the beach area. The lanai areas were furnished w/a table w/3 chairs and an oversized, very comfy couch & pillows. It was the best part of the rooms & a great place to relax in the morning or before dinner. I would highly recommend requesting these rooms- they are away from the main part of the hotel (& therefore quieter) and equidistant from the lazy river & Fresh buffet restaurant (very convenient!). They are in the 'east wing'- rooms 150 through 155. As noted in some previous reviews, the ac is not as strong as we are used to in the States, but it is definitely cooler than outside (!) & there are ceiling fans which help significantly. The lazy river/slide pool was great for all ages- we went there everyday and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves (the 'rough bottom' of the pool didn't bother us- in fact we never noticed it). Getting lounges in shady areas was challenging at times, since none of us bothered to do the 'sunrise reserve the chairs' bit- but we always found something somewhere. Most of the time we were floating around & around making frequent stops at the bar anyway. The drinks, although the alcohol is definitely not top shelf, were always strong- and always good. The favorite seemed to be the Bob Marley (very colorful & sweet). At times there was a bit of a wait because the bar in the pool was the place to be- but it was never a big deal. Since we were there from a Thursday through Monday, I think we avoided experiencing the 'cruise ship crowd'- I can imagine that would create some serious overcrowding and make the experience less than ideal. Towards the end of the day, 'debris' (cups & straws) does pile up along the pool edges, but if people are floating around sipping libations, what can you expect? They are certainly not going to get up & out of the pool to look for a trash can everytime they finish a drink. We also traveled on 2 excursions, so we weren't there all day everyday. We definitely enjoyed the trip to Negril & Rick's Cafe (2 out of the 5 of us did the highest jump & survived unharmed) and also to Ocho Rios for Dunns River Falls & shopping. I booked these online in advance through Jaital
A little less expensive than through the hotel and since there were 5 of us, we had our own private tour both days. Our driver, Nicholas was great. On the way back from Negril he stopped at Scotchies so we could get "the best jerk chicken on the island". The food at the Hilton overall- including the 'specialty' restaurants (I made reservations at each of them via email ahead of our arrival) was unremarkable & typical for an all inclusive resort, but it was certainly plentiful and we all enjoyed it well enough. We found the staff to be unremarkable as well- friendly enough, but not outstanding- and slightly slow- but when you're on vacation, what's the rush? Entertainment was basically nonexistent during our stay- there was a very bad steel drum band one night and other musical groups. The 'shows' were over, I think by 10 or 10:30 and then there really is nothing to do but sit at the Bar King Frog & drink. We heard tell of a local bar 'down the road' that people took a cab to, but we didn't bother. So- concluding this rambling... this resort can be awesome & terrible at the same time. It all depends on your perspective & expectations. Although the Hilton Rose Hall suited our purpose for this trip, if we ever have the opportunity to go back to Jamaica, I would definitely look to stay elsewhere.
