“Delightful Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2014

What a delight it was to stay in Rimu, Hydrangea Cottages. We received a warm welcome and were appreciative of the extra touches like beautiful soaps, natural linen on the bed, thoughtful decorations, that made the stay memorable. What a wonderful way to slip into dusk, by having a soak in the outdoor bath looking out to the garden and glimpses of the ocean.

The 'cottage' we had was the upstairs apartment! Lovely situation, furnishings were good, though not so flashy that we could not relax. Gardens were great, though the trees had grown so much that the view of the sea was limited! We found that this was true of most of New Zealand, there were many scenic lookouts, but they were, or in danger of becoming a 'non-scenic' lookout, due to the greenery not being cut back. We learned that there are so many species of foliage that are protected that they cannot be cut back! Seems rather daft, to say it is a scenic lookout, but then there is little to see! Come on DOC, sort your rules and regs out, so people can enjoy your country!

Room Tip: Choose Rata, has the best view!

This was a brilliant stop for us. Although more expensive than some motels we have stayed in Hydrangea Cottage was a superb location with amazing facilities. We took Rata cottage which was on the first floor tucked away amongst the hydrangeas. It was beautiful. Within 5 minutes we were walking on a virtually deserted beach. Do shop before arriving as there are no local shops that sell provisions if you are hoping to self cater.

Very happy with this choice. Bring your own food supplies, local Tavern worse food we've encounted on our trip so far. Lovely cottage, beautiful outlook over the ocean. Nice gardens in private setting. Karen lovely, cottage heated on arrival. Everything close by but difficult with towns topography to walk around area. Would stay again.

we only had one night and would love to have stayed longer (and undertaken a horse trek which is a business attached to the cottages). cottages with sea views were booked. Our cottage was set back amongst the trees. It was very quiet and perfect for the hot day we were there (could possibly be a bit on the dark side in winter) It was well equipped and spacious. A beautiful area

Room Tip: The accommodation with sea views would be amazing. If self catering it would pay to shop at Greymout...

Only one night of our 2 week touring holiday of New Zealand was unplanned - the west coast of the South Island. Arriving - somewhat harried - after sunset and armed with a recommendation from our travel guide, we sought out Hydrangea Cottages in the dark. And, once we made our discovery, we were over the moon with the welcome we received and our eventual accommodation, the upper level of the Rata Hut in it's coastal rainforest setting. After settling in we left our teenage sons comfortably to their own devices - smart phones and junk food - while Donna and I visited the local tavern just up the road for dinner. That night we all slept like logs, washed by the sound of the nearby pounding waves, and awoke to a sensationally sunny wild west surf morning. Loved the setting, loved the comfort, loved the service…loved everything.
