Went to the Penang bird park today after spending an amazing 5 days in Georgetown. We had checked out the butterfly farm on the island and were extremely impressed and expected the same caliber from the bird park. We were gravely disappointed. The place was expensive and run down, which in Malaysia I can deal with as I'm happy to spend a litlle extra in order to help improve conditions. The birds do not look happy. There are 8 species of owl forced by chain and padlock no less, to sit on a tree in the baking hot sun for hours on end. The emu had pecked off half his own feathers. An eagle in the entrance was not only tied down but his leather strap had become trapped around a nail and it was unable to escape at all. An employee was using a leafblower to clear the entrance way of debris and this was causing the bird great distress but it could not get away. The crocodiles water was filthy and the cages were too small with little or no provision of food or water. Don't go. Better yet, go with a set of bolt cutters and let a little light into these animals lives by setting them free.

“Not too bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2012

We went during the Easter break and thought that it would be crowded - there were only 5 other groups there. The bird show, while interesting, only had a handful of visitors - I think our family alone made up half the number.

The place does look dilapidated and is in desperate need of some TLC. The place was opened in 1988 and looks like it hasn't been updated since then. Initially I was horrified, especially with the visitor seats being lopsided, worn down and the umbrella shades so dirty that you feel embarrassed for the place. But look a little more closely and you'll find some gems.

At first I did feel very sorry for the animals being caged up, some of the birds with chains around their feet so they don't fly off but actually most zoos/parks/sanctuaries etc are not that different - it's just because this place looks so run down it gives off that impression.

You can feed the fish and the birds - note that what you feed the birds (from containers costing RM1) is actually mealworms and the worms are still alive. Very different from the usual pellets at other places!

They also charge RM1 for using your camera which was surprising but the poor place is in desperate need of some cash!

Perhaps if more visitors came then they might have the funds to update it. We were there for a few hours looking carefully at everything, every cage, every bird, every animal etc and there were not many visitors. You could view the park in less time, depending on how interested you are.

Toilets were not that bad - but hey... this is Malaysia!!

“We don't understand the reviews trashing the Bird Park; we liked it.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2011

We visited the Penang Bird Park and we liked it, especially our teenage daughter who is an animal fanatic. Granted, it is not easy to find and the entrance is not very impressive, and it is rather local instead of a manufactured Disneyland-like experience, but that is part of its attraction.

The Penang Bird Park is full of local and Southeast Asian species. The hornbills, pheasants, and peacocks were particularly interesting. Most of these species you don't have a prayer of seeing in the wild as the region is crowded with concrete high rises and palm oil plantations.

We found the birds healthy and well cared for; the peacocks were some of the healthiest specimens we've seen anywhere. Our animal-loving daughter would have protested loudly otherwise.

An escape from the plastic theme park atmosphere. The best thing for Penang Bird Park would be more visitors who appreciate a somewhat localized experience instead of another version of a shopping mall.

P.S. This is not the only place we visited in Malaysia where the toilets are below par.

“Don't bother! Save your money”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2011

We found the Penang Bird Park to be disappointing and quite dirty. Many of the birds have nasty eye injuries and just look miserable. Stay away from the toilets they are frightening! The ponds with the big fish are filthy and you couldnt see a thing, the big birds were almost featherless, poor things. In a nutshell, just dont waste your money.

“Butterfly Garden under renovation, so we opted for the Birdpark”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2011

If you are not renting a car in Penang, please be sure to hire a cab driver for A DAY. Yes! Get the cab driver to quote you, for example - 1) Sending you to lunch, 2) to stated places of interest, 3) Sending you to dinner and then sending you back to hotel.

All the cabbies are parked along hotels and it is very very difficult to get a cab off other parts of Penang.

Back to the Birdpark, we opted to visit Penang Birdpark as unfortunately, the Butterfly Garden was under renovation. The birdpark is of a modest size with adequate range of displays of bird specimens. I am not too impress, having come from Singapore, but it's not bad. And one more point to note about Penang, please bring a brolly that is UV friendly especially. You need one to shield from the sun.
