My husband and I have traveled quite a bit in Mexico and the Caribbean and I have to say this was a top notch resort. We had gone back and forth with booking at an all inclusive or finding a place like this, and I have to say, I am soooo glad we decided against yet another tawdry all-inclusive. We are not golfers, and this resort is a haven for golfers, however, it had plenty of what we were looking for as well.
First, let me say that we stayed in a forest casita which is their "lowest" grade villa. I had priced an upgrade to their garden casita and even considered an ocean view, but am glad that I didn't pay the extra $$ because it truly was not needed. Our jaws dropped when we walked into our humble little casita with an 8 foot round jacuzzi/plunge pool and teak wood floors and furniture. It was also large. Bigger than my first apartment!! I particularly loved the bellagio shower that opened onto our front patio (yes there was a front and back patio!). I was doubly glad that we had not upgraded to an ocean view. While the views from those casitas were indisputably lovely, many were right by the restaurant and pool, or overlooked the public parks leading up to the beach. We preferred the intimacy of our little jungle casita surrounded by palm trees and foliage creating complete privacy. We could still hear the waves at night, and the beach was a 5 minute walk away.
The staff was wonderful and very attentive, but not at all intrusive. The fact that there are only 30 or so rooms plus the private houses means that you always have your pick of the beach. The waves were a little rough so we didn't go snorkeling (low visibility) but the private cove was still fabulous.
Only a few things fell short of my expectations, but they don't rise to the level of complaints. First, I had both a massage and an exfoliation treatment that were a bit overpriced for the quality. Second, the food was good, but not fabulous (better than an all inclusive, but I agree with the January poster that I’ve had better), and again pretty expensive. We paid between $120 and $170 (with wine) a night for our meals with another $40-60 for lunch or breakfast (we never needed three meals!). There was one exception...we had a private dinner at the 9th hole restaurant, and Antonio is a fabulous cook and host. That meal however, was well over $300 with tip.
Now, that brings me to my last point. We were obviously surrounded by people of means. My husband and I do well, but we don't own a private yacht or a 6 million dollar home (several of our fellow guests did and didn't mind talking about it!!). We have been to Mexico on several occasions and therefore, generally know what to expect for the price of a boat for a few hours to tour and take us snorkeling...it is not usually $300! Nor, do you usually find $25 bottles of sun block (bring your own, theirs appears to be homemade and is chalky and doesn’t go above 25 spf), or $5 snicker bars. Expect to pay more for basic amenities. It is worth it for the price of staying there, but if you are like us, you may experience some initial sticker shock.
Overall, it was by far the best tropical vacation we have had, and proof that Mexico can play with the best of them when it comes to sophisticated luxury.
