My boyfriend and I ate here twice while in Juayua. I am a vegetarian and the owner of our hotel recommended R y R on our first night there, so we decided to check it out. On our first visit we shared the veggie stir fry dish, which was beautifully presented and delicious and came with a very nice salad with local fruits and a cucumbery-dressing. Head chef Carlos was very welcoming and when we asked for some salsa picante he whipped up a delicious bowl of freshly made hot sauce. We wanted to finish it so we asked for a few tortillas, and ended up with an insanely delicious plate of fried tortillas with cheese and hot peppers. It was perfect.
On our second visit my boyfriend had the steak, and when he couldn't decide which sauce to choose Carlos offered to make a small serving of each on one plate so he could taste them all. It was a ton of food but he really enjoyed it. I had the veggie lasagna, which wasn't as good as the stir fry, but still tasty.
Hands down the most memorable offering here was the peanut (mani) horchata. It is life changingly good. Even if you don't have a chance to eat a full meal here you should stop in to try this drink. I am still craving it.
Ambience is nice, with candles and bird paintings by a local artist on the tables and walls. Sit near the window for good people watching. Service was excellent, our waiter was super friendly and Carlos chatted with us and recommended local sights to see.
It was really refreshing to see such creative cooking being done by a local chef in Juayua - a rare treat in the small towns of El Salvador. Thanks for some great meals and conversation, Carlos and crew :)
