“Wonderful hotel with amazing staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

My partner and I had a wonderful stay at Saint Nicholas Hotel. Our room was big and comfortable, the breakfast buffet was great, the surrounding gardens were very pleasant and the price was good value for money.
But what really made a difference was the amazing staff that run the hotel. They were all extremely polite and helpful while being discreet and with a great deal of respect for their customers.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this hotel to any traveller visiting Corfu!

3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

My boyfriend & I (both aged 26) have just returned from a week's break at the Saint Nicholas in Gouvia. Being 5 months pregnant, our aim for this holiday was solely to relax; therefore we chose Gouvia & the Saint Nicholas as a more relaxing alternative to some of the larger resorts in Corfu.

Hotel
The Saint Nicholas hotel is set across a dual carriageway and up a steep hill from the main strip of restaurants & the marina/beach. This was not an issue for us as we had hired a car for the week but is something to be aware of if you are on foot. The benefit of this location is that the hotel is set high up in beautiful gardens, which are very well maintained, however the downside is that the sheltered location misses out on most of the coastal breezes, meaning it can get very hot at the poolside. The pool is a good size for the amount of guests and again was very clean and well maintained. There is also a smaller baby pool, which is partially shaded, if you are travelling with children. Plenty of sunbeds & shaded areas for the number of guests in the hotel at the time we travelled.

Rooms
The rooms are spacious, with a balcony or terrace, but in need of modernisation. The shower lacked power (unsure if this was due to being on the 3rd floor) and heat and the kitchen facilities (although we never used them) were tired and in desperate need of an update. The beds were quite hard and uncomfortable (although being pregnant may have made this worse). A lick of paint and some new bathroom and kitchen facilities would bring these rooms up to date.

Food
We stayed on a B&B basis, however were disappointed with the basic breakfast on offer. Served from 8am-10am, the food was limited to toast, fruit, cheese, ham and olives-with a few sweet cakes and jams. This may suit some guests however we preferred to have an early lunch or late breakfast down in the resort. We ate lunch once at the pool bar and the food was ok. Salads were very fresh and toasties etc were made quickly-however more choice can be found down in the resort for the same or cheaper price. We never ate in the hotel restaurant in the evening as we preferred to venture out.

Resort
Gouvia is a small resort with approximately 30 restaurants/bars across the small inland road. We had lovely meals at Mythos, Vergina, 9 Muses & Leon’s and would recommend these to future travellers. If you are looking for nightlife and more choice of restaurants then one of the larger resorts would be more suited to you. For a week, the choice is ok.

Nearby
As we had a car, we drove to Dassia, Ipsos, Barbati, Nissaki, Corfu town (Kerkyra) & Paleokastritsa-none of which took longer than 25 mins to get to.

Nissaki is definitely worth a visit for a picturesque cove with shallow turquoise waters, perfect for swimming and pedalos. Scuba lessons take place here too & boats can be hired out to venture around the coast line. We ate at the Mitsos tavern-whose tables literally over hang the water, lovely fresh food, friendly family run business, with great views across the coast.

Paleokastritsa is known as the most beautiful point on the island & again is well worth a visit for some perfect photo opportunities and picturesque coves & beaches. Steep steps down to the coves can be challenging but worth it. Can get busy with tourist coaches on certain days of the week and the restaurants were pricier due to location.

Corfu Town (Kerkyra) is beautiful and very well maintained for such an old town. Great shopping in both the old and new parts, with lovely cafes & bars to watch the world go by. Haggle for a bargain on leather goods and hide from the midday heat in the shady back streets of the old town. Well worth a visit.

All in all, we enjoyed our week’s stay, however would not return to this particular hotel, or resort as it didn’t really live up to other holiday destinations.

Room Tip: Ask for a pool/garden view room as rooms on the opposite side of the hotel don't have great view...

5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

My wife and I just stayed at the hotel 7th - 14th June 2013 - It was a lovely family run hotel set in beautifully tended grounds in Gouvia. The hotel is situated just 300 metres up a gentle climbing road from the main carriageway.
It is still close enough to be accessible to all the local Gouvia bars and tavernas (cross the carriageway at the bottom of the hotel road, and cut through the small alley short cut under the GALEA sign to access the bars and tavernas).

If it is a peaceful holiday in a hotel situated away from the usual resort trappings that you're after, then this is the place to go. With no entertainment a good sleep was had every night. Although self catering, a plentiful basic continental breakfast (meats/ cheeses/fruit/ cereals & cooked breakfast etc) was served each day in the restaurant which you could just help yourself to. All the staff were very courteous and friendly and really went out of their way to make sure you had an enjoyable stay.
The reception staff were very accommodating when we asked for a change to a quieter room at the side, away from reception as my wife is a light sleeper and heard the comings and goings of new guest arrivals late at night.) We had a new room confirmed almost immediately.

Rooms were basic but spacious, small kitchen area with 2-plate electric hob and sink was neatly concealed by cupboard doors, and also featured working air-con. Fridges could do with replacing as seals had gone in both rooms.
L-shaped pool is quite large, well maintained, and was sufficient to do plenty of laps or just laze about in. Well-stocked pool bar with small dining area on patio. Snacks served as well as evening meals - good choice for meat-eaters but not veggies.
Bit pricey but lots of people raved about the food in the guest book - it was also quite clear that the same guests return over and over again, as would we!
Should you go out of season and the weather is inclement there are two large drawing rooms with comfy sofa's, well-stocked book cases where you can exchange borrow and exchange books and a large open fire. We went in June and the weather was glorious so only made use of the book shelves!

Self catering was ideal for us. With a large supermarket called "Diellas" nearby, we made our own Greek Salads at lunch in our room on pool days and made pack ups on trip days. Every evening we ate out. (basic starters 2 - 5 euros, mains 7 euros - 17euros (for fish and speciality dishes, Deserts - 3 -5 euros.

As well as Gouvia tavernas, a short walk on the beach, past the boatyard brings you into Kontikali we more food tavernas...remember the mosquito protection at night as they are out in force around woody areas near the beach.

All in all, a brilliant trip with the staff also taking time to bid us farwell on departure which added that extra touch!.

Room Tip: Request a room at the side or back of hotel if possible. We initially had room 321 which was over th...

St Nicholas hotel was exactly what we wanted for a relaxing trip. We stayed for a last minute very long weekend at the end of May.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful from the minute we arrived until we left. The hotel was quiet at the time so we were upgraded to a room overlooking the lovely gardens and pool. The room was very spacious with a fairly large balcony, kitchenette containing a fridge, hob, kettle, sink and dishes. We only used the fridge but that was great to have to keep cold drinks in the room.

The pool was very nice set in gardens with a shaded snack and bar area. Sun beds are provided. The pool is a particular bonus as the beach in Gouvia is small and stones so we spent most of our days lounging around the pool. Although we didn't eat at the hotel (except for breakfast) the snack and restaurant menu looked nice and reasonably priced with daily specials.

The hotel is set about 10mins walk up the hill from the town which was perfect for us as we wanted somewhere quiet. The stroll home in the evenings was relaxing after trying out the bars and restaurants Gouvia had to offer although it would be a challenge for anyone with difficulty walking.

Would definitely recommend this hotel.

When I stay in places like this it makes me want to own a hotel!

Great place with a really good mix of nationalities including plenty of Greek Mainlanders which was lovely.

All the staff were extremely helpful whether it was hiring a car, buying an ice cream or spending the night in their yummy reasonably priced restaurant.

Gouvia is a 5 minute walk down the hill and about a 20 minute walk back up and probably not suitable for less physically able people. However, we found after a bottle of vino or 2 the walk got much easier :0)

Saint Nicholas is a very nice hotel located in a perfect spot in the outskirts of Gouvia. Very close to the marina which was important for us since we had some friends staying on their sailing boat.
The hotel is great and its location very peaceful so we were able to enjoy excellent sleeping quality. We also enjoyed a lot the gardens and the pool. We spent long hours reading in the early morning just sitting by the pool while no one else was around.
We also enjoyed some great meals (both lunches and dinners) at the hotel's taverna that is just by the pool. The food was delicious and the prices really good.

We booked a break here with half board.

The room we had was quiet on the first floor. It was comfortable, with a kitchen and fridge in a wardrobe, useful for boiling water to drink! The room was very large and roomy. We asked for a bathmat, and were provided with one. The bathroom tiles were very shiny and potentially slippery.

The wi fi internet connection in the room was free, and worked extremely well. The satellite TV only had CNN in English, but we found the wi fi made up for this.

The outdoor pool was lovely, and the prices of ice cream and drinks very reasonable. Plenty of shade under the trees, but no enough sun umbrellas. Weather was great and we could relax by the pool.

We did a coach trip around Corfu which was excellent.

The evening meals were delicious, but a fixed menu was served on half board. Fortunately we liked everything that was served. The waitress and manager of the bar restaurant were charming and gave a personal service. A choice of meals would be appreciated.

Breakfast was excellent, with plenty of choice.

The manager and receptionist were extremely friendly and helpful at all times.

The beach reached by a short walk down the hill, and a busy main road, is one of the best we have seen abroad. With a duck pond, and access to an ancient Venetian Boatyard.

When we left we were waived goodbye by the Manager and Owner. This is a testament to the dedication of this hotel to look after all of it's visitors, like one of the "family".

We experienced mosquito bites, but understand that this is the norm at this time of the year all over Corfu.

Room Tip: The hotel has no lifts, ask for a ground floor room if stairs are an issue.
