“One of the good museums to learn about the local heritage and culture.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2012

Here's a historical account of the museum.
In 1888, it was decided to build a museum in fond memory of Colonel John Watson, Political Agent of Saurashtra from 1881 to 1889 A.D., for services he rendered to the cause of Saurashtra. The museum was to be set up in Memorial Institute Buildings located in Jubilee Garden.

Colonel Watson was fond of history and archaeology and used to collect information on Rajkot. Most of his collection and other artefacts are stored here. Besides, the building houses artefact from Mohen-jo-Daro; 13th Century Carvings; temple statues, Natural history exhibits; ancient coins; photographs; oil paintings of the erstwhile rulers of Saurashtra; royal crests; royal furniture pieces; instruments and armoury from the princely times; miniature paintings; clothes; mineral and rock samples etc. in its various departments.

Watson Museum of Rajkot is the second most important museum of Gujarat, after the museum of Baroda and is the oldest museum in Saurashtra. There is a bust of Col.Watson on display in the museum.

Besides the museum, the Jubillee buildings houses the Town Hall and the Lang Library; both worth a visit. Nearby attractions include:

1. Watson Museum
2. Conaught Hall
3. Lang Library
4. Band Stand
5. Traditional Houses in Krishna Para
6. Badari Mosque
7. Shri Dharmendrasinhji Cloth Market
8. Sir Lakhaji Raj Vegetable Market
9. Thosa gali

12. Traditional Houses in Nava naka area (Premila Road)
13. Prahalad Talkies
14. Kansara Bazaar
15. Raiya Naka Gate and Tower

If you walk to see all of the above, it may take you anywhere between 2 to 4 hours depending on your interests.
