“Our #1 Beach Resort in Negros Oriental”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2011

The wife and I live in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental. When we want to go to the beach for a day of relaxation Pura Vida Resort is our 1st choice of over 30 or more beach resorts in the area. This resort is always outstandingly manicured, with swimming pool just a few meters from the waters edge and a beautiful maintained, wide sandy beach. The beach front bar has everything and is the place to meet and enjoy people from all over the world. Recommend reserving early a beach table for a lovely sunset, candlelight dinner from their exquisite prepared local and international menu. We always enjoy the friendly and courteous staff, and Chris and Juvie are to be commended for the overall management of this large resort. In Negros, this is the place to go for a day at the beach, or a short or extended stay in their large cottages. You will not be disappointed nor dissatisfied. Well Done! Bill and Kathy Best.

P.S. If you are a PADI diver or want to become one, this resort has the best training school, the latest and best equipment, modern dive boats, and choice diving areas.

First class resort. Clean comfortable rooms in a really beautiful setting. The included breakfast was first class and nothing was too much trouble for the staff.
The dive operation is slick but still manages to provide individual attention.
All in all if you are diving in Negros look no further.

So we did a boat transfer from Sea Explorers’ other location in the area - Cabilao - and it had been very low key - one of the best dives there was actually on the way to Pura Vida in Dauin at Balicasag: awesome selection of fish and underwater topology. We arrived with slightly lowered expectations and were happy to have Pure Vida blow them away on several levels - great staff, hyper friendly and real - able to be themselves with the guests. The location was busy but not intrusively so, it’s well laid out, and the bar, with attached dining area, the dive center and a medium size pool all knit together well as focal points of the resort, all right on the beach. The Menu was quiet varied, some things were quite good, prawns and steak for example, and then there were a few dishes that were just quite awful “nice try but perhaps a little ambitious.” The massages in the spa were fine. The dive sites and schedule was very varied, generally a 1 to 2 or 1 to 4 dive master ratios, aside from the bid trips which was awesome. Locations are varied. I’d actually have liked more time here – a 7 day trip would work. Apparently a couple of the neighboring resorts have good restaurants too for a little variety, but we didn’t realize this until it was too late... would go back! Oh you must do the Apo island trip - if you hve time, it might be worth one night on Apo too. The market in Dauin is not worth the trip.

We are both divers and we travel with children 2 and 4 years old. We are experienced travelers in Asia. We were recommended this resort from another Seaexplorer-resort on Malapascua. We had a family room with everything you need. The resort is small and cozy. There is a friendly athmosphere. The food in the restaurant was really excellent, both asian and european food. They have a nice and clean pool. Free wifi from the room. Prices were reasonable at a resort of this standard, and value for money were the best of the seven resorts we stayed at during our month to the Philippines. Diving was proffesionally run, and the divesites close to the resort is really worth the trip. You can also go out to Apo Island for a daytrip with three dives, recommended. The diving was very good value for money also. The resort and diveshop is run by swiss people. The only small drawback we have is that there was only swiss and german people. There were no other families with children. It was our first stay there, but if we come back to the Visayas we will stay at the Pura Vida again.

My first trip to this resort, although I am a veteran of many dive trips to the Philippines, and to other dive resorts in the area. The resort is on a brown sand beach, on a generous plot, although nearby there are rather undistinguished surroundings, the beach is not very clean apart from the bit in front of the resort, which is kept clean by the staff. There is a neglected plot of land next door, overlooked by the restaurant, with bits of rubbish and old scrap iron to add to the view! But ..avert your eyes from the surroundings and the centre of the resort is however really attractive. I stayed in a deluxe room, aircon, very comfortable, brick/concrete construction and well up to 4* standard. Food was generally good, reasonably priced, the menu choice a little unimaginative however, the local dishes the best choice. But I agree with a previous comment about lack of good coffee, they don't seem to have mastered the art of freshly brewed coffee, it is either straight instant (at breakfast) of if you order coffee from the bar it comes from a machine that makes a kind of superior instant coffee (like Nespresso)! However, I can report that WiFi is definitely free to guests. All the staff in the resort were extremely polite and helpful.

The dive operation clearly caters primarily for large groups, there are three big dive boats and a couple of smaller craft. When I was there, nearly all guests were native German speakers, particularly from Switzerland. The owner/course director, Chris, was very much in evidence checking up on everything, and he quickly sorted out a concern I had over my dive schedule which had been arranged by one of his staff. Off the beach in front of the dive centre and nearby are quite a few dive sites offering great macro opportunities with muck diving. For reefs, they take a trip every other day, at least, to Apo Island, reputed to be, according to local info, one of the'top 10 dives sites in the world.' My experience of diving 6 dive sites at Apo over 2 days would not put it in this category: yes, nice soft and hard coral, with a little bleaching in places, but not huge fish population. I thought that Balicassag at Alona Beach was better, and certainly Verde Island near Batangas was much more impressive. But admittedly we were diving on the leeward side of the island mostly, because of prevailing winds and currents. The dive guides and instructors were most pleasant and professional, if a little too tolerant off some pretty bad diving behaviour I witnessed from a few divers - like swimming miles away from the dive guide on their own when diving with a group, almost to the point of expecting the others to follow them, or appalling bouyancy control . 'We musn't upset the customers' seems to be the rule here for the dive guides. A not uncommon problem it seems to me for diligent dive guides, but if they keep on failing to correct such problems with errant divers they have been guiding, it continues to cause difficulty for other divers in the group.

Anyway, in all, a good experience, some lovely people in the resort, and it does work like clockwork (Swiss style).

A very pretty and nice resort that I would return to. Nice and comfortable rooms with AC. Everything is very easily accessible with a pool, which forms a natural center with deluxe rooms spread like a horseshoe with the restaurant and dive center at one end. Diving is amazing and talented guides will lead you between the various critters and their accustomed eyes see everything. Everyone at Pura Vida did everything that we would feel comfortable and have a fantastic vacation.

We did a dive safari of 4 destinations in the Philippines with Sea Explorers and we where treated like royalty at Pura Vida. We where 14 South Africans who did Moalboal, Dauin, Alona beach and Cabilao. Our stay at Pura Vida in Dauin was made unforgettable by the owner, Chris Heim and his staff. They went out of their way to make our stay a memorable one. We where very impressed by their 5 Star PADI dive centre and the professional way they run it. I can recommend this resort to anyone.
