“Don't go to Vietnam without coming here”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2013

Soon no one will go to Vietnam without coming here as well.
This place is great. We'll run, clean, chilled out and affordable.
Very helpful with local tours both arranged and externally.
Definitely do more than 2-3 nights here and take in a few of the amazing tours.
They are pricey it seems but they are value for money.
The single thing I'd say if that the food could be better.
I say that not because it's bad but just that we had so much great food in Vietnam that in the end the food here wasn't as good as elsewhere....probably a bit harsh in the scheme of things.

Stay here!

Ignore the negative reviews of this great place. Rooms are fairly basic but clean and comfortable and the staff go above and beyond to help you out. Mike and Dean were particularly helpful in organising tours and transfers and offering general advice on the area and beyond. They were also extremely patient in answering all my tedious questions and no request was too large small or small. Things can be a bit pricey compared to elsewhere in Vietnam but this is because of their remote location and also support for local people and business. This is explained clearly in the email they send you to confirm your booking, so it's not fair to complain about it on Trip Advisor later! Additionally, if you see caramel chicken on the specials board, just order it - it's amazing!

Staff were really friendly and helpful - gave us great advice and information about the local area, culture and history. The national park tour was excellent - really great value, great tour guide with loads of information and a brilliant range of activities and sites. Rooms are clean and spacious - not luxury but comfortable and practical. There's also an in-house restaurant serving a good range of western and Vietnamese food. Staff are happy to sort out taxis etc into the village as well as providing information and advice about onward travel. Lovely stay and wonderful experience exploring the stunning national park.

I enjoyed 3 nights at Phong Nha Farmstay and was a real highlight.
It wasn't on my agenda, but a chance conversation with Bich had me determined to pay a visit and enjoy some of the most spectacular surrounds, along with great accommodation, food and company.
The farmstay is a place you can do as much or as little as you like. There are treks and tours to suit all, from the real adventurous to "wannabes" like me. Or you can hire a bike to explore the local area, or go out on a motorbike with a local driver.
It seems a difficult place to get to, but the Farmstay make it easy by offering a range of options and from the moment you arrive you feel welcome and right at home (thanks Mike). I travelled from Hue and back again on the minibus operated by the Farmstay. Its a great option and includes a tour of Vinh Moc tunnels in the DMZ.
Many locals are employed and all greet you with a lovely friendly smile, regardless of what they do. Spending time with local people is a real treat, and watching them going about their daily lives is enlightening and uplifting.
The food is excellent, with varied local and western choices, and generous serves.
Good COLD beer is plentiful, and essential for sitting outside at sundown.... a lovely part of the day.
And the company is great. Bich and Ben (and Michael) are wonderful hosts and obviously love what they do. Every guest is special and are made to feel so.
My single room was large, airy and well appointed. And clean and comfortable.
I can truly recommend Phong Nha Farmstay to any traveler... whether solo, couples or groups.
Singles will never be alone, unless you want to be.
Many thanks to Bich, Ben, Mike and all the crew.
TOM

Thanks Tom,
Thanks for choosing to stay and taking the time to write a review, about your three day stay at Phong Nha Farmstay.

We do have a lot to offer all types of travelers visiting us here. We try to cater to what people require when on holidays (what we would like when we are on holidays) and we understand that this area surrounding us is a wonderland of things to do and see and learn about.

It is nice to hear you mention that you used and enjoyed, the DMZ Transfer service both to and from Hue, stopping at Vinh Moc Tunnels and the Ben Hai River Museum on the DMZ (runs daily). We designed this to give people the opportunity to visit the area to or from Hue while still being able to economically see some of the interesting things along the way . I recommend that people do something similar between Hue and Hoi An as often enough the best things to see are on the way, between the large cities with tourism infrustructure. Not actually in the cities where the trains and the On-Off Bus stops.

As far as the rooms and food go, we are always working towards making the Farmstay a more enjoyable experience. Glad you enjoyed our hospitality. Hopefully we will see you on your next visit to Vietnam.

Bich, Ben, Mike and all the crew.

I stayed in the Phong Nha Farmstay for 3 nights and had a fantastic time. It was just after the storm so not all of the tours were available, but we got to see the National Park and Paradise Cave and they were both amazing and alone would have made the trip worth it. There were only 8 people on the tour and we were given loads of information and insight into the local area and it's history. They now have a 2 night minimum and recommend 3 nights, but I think I'd recommend 4 nights, especially when it's not raining! Ben and Bich have set the farmstay up really well, with well-kept rooms and the atmosphere every evening was great, with everyone sitting around, chatting and getting to know each other. As a solo traveller, I especially enjoyed this aspect. I got the minibus from Hue and beforehand, wasn't too pushed about the 2 stops on the way. I changed my mind at both stops though and it was good to get to see some history and not just feel like you were on a bus for hours. The service from everyone was great and they organised onward transportation etc... My only regret is not staying a fourth night! The farmstay has a charm that I haven't found anywhere else really and I have been telling everyone I've met about it.

It was great to visit the Farm Stay after several days in hectic Hanoi. It was a beautiful area, even though the rice paddies have been harvested and are brown at the moment. The rooms are good and the people great. We only had some minor annoyances: uncomfortable bed (which seems to be the norm in Vietnam!), clogged shower drain, and flies buzzing around when you eat (nothing you can do about that in a rural area). We did their National Park Tour which was very good and informative. The highlight of the tour was Paradise Cave - simply breathtaking! Although in the domestic tourism high season (June-August) I hear it gets very overcrowded, which would take away from the overall experience. We ended up blowing our budget in the few days we stayed here, but we think it was worth it! The owners and employees of the Farm Stay are very nice and helpful. It was the first hostel we came across in Vietnam that really had a communal hostel atmosphere, with people hanging out together in the common area - lots of fun!

What a beautiful, amazing piece of the planet and such a great place to experience it from. We were here early September and stayed on the second floor overlooking the gorgeous fields with cows and buffalo and ducks that you could sit and watch and listen to for hours as they went about being animals. We only stayed for a few days as we were pressed for time but we had a wonderful stay. The room was clean and tidy and the bathroom big and open, meals area/restaurant was a great communal area with impromptu live music and the staff chatting with you about their adventures and yours. There was yoga on the roof top taken by Hannah and the roof top bar run from the bar below via pulleys and a bucket (awesome!! What a ace to see the sun go down) and I saw my first stay in SE Asia here :)The only let down was the lack of vegetarian food - went quickly and left not a lot to chose from. We did the dry cave and waterfall tour with a brilliant guide and two really great couples (one of which we travelled to Hoi An with and spent the next 5 days hanging out). Our guide was really knowledgeable and entertaining and made the day even more special than it was. The cave was breathtaking, awe inspiring and slightly overwhelming. Just incredible. Don't forget to grab a few postcards of photos taken by one of the team Mike - they really capture the area.
Thanks for a great adventure guys, next time we will stay longer!

Room Tip: Worth the extra for the view of a second floor room.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
We, Ben and Bich, had an epiphany to start a tourism business in the middle of nowhere and ourfamily and the rest of the community thought we were mad. Now half of them think it was their idea. Our Mission statement was to create what we'd want if we were on holiday, in this then remote and still beautiful region of northern central Vietnam. Comfortable beds, nice views, a swimming pool, full bar, tasty food and top quality tours/activities. Winning formula, so we thought! We get a lot of customers looking for something different to a backpacker hostel scene, but with a fun atmosphere. Not a vietnamese hotel atmosphere either. Something unique. Something for everybody. Immerse yourself in the magic of remote rural Vietnam, between the coast and the mountains, in the northern Central region just now being discovered by mainstream tourism. Take yourself on a trip into a photographer's paradise. Our new French Colonial style accommodation, set in the idyllic surroundings of rice paddy fields on the edge of the famous Phong Nha-Ke Bang World Heritage National Park just off the Ho Chi Minh Trail, is the ideal base for wild adventures that you have only dreamed about... or simply take time to experience the local village life or chill by the pool. There are many tour and do it yourself options to keep you busy for a few days. Send us an email for more information. ... more   less
