“average hotel but restaurant and some customer service let it down!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2009

Was having mini family reunion - some live north, some south, so hence stay in the Derbyshire. When arrived at 15.30, several groups standing around not able to get into their rooms despite the hotel stating you can get in from 14.00. When we did get in, there were no towels in our room. Very prominently displayed piece of paper illustrating film selection available including soft porn - did state parents could contact reception obviously to bar access, but would have preferred not to have kids charge in and read up on it!
Spa pool v. small, unsuitable for swimming if more than 6 in pool. Could only eat in restaurant at either 6 or 9 despite our early arrival and attempts to book. Would echo what others said re limited expensive menu. At breakfast big groups sitting round not able to get into breakfast! Had not seen this before in any hotel. Strange since it was a buffet breakfast and there were free tables inside. Think some of the restaurant problems due to logistics - the tables just needed clearing more quickly, also teas and coffees could have been made part of buffet (with urns etc) thus freeing up staff time. Possibly more restaurant staff required at peak time.
Despite all this, staff friendly and hotel looks nice and attractive. Rooms. as others have stated, have nice beds and sheets etc. Probably just renaming the spa would help - 'junction 28' not the most evocative.

Thank you for your feedback on Trip Advisor

May I apologise for the challenges you experienced during your stay. From the points raised in your feedback I see that we failed to meet your expectations of a Principal-Hayley Hotel. I can understand the disappointment you must have felt.

We did have some challenges with our computer system making checking in quite slow. We have since introduced tea and coffee urns during our breakfast service as your request to speed things up at breakfast

We have been very busy over the month of August, this should not affect the level of service we offer to all our guests, unfortunately our pool does get a little overcrowded at peak times.

We always openly welcome constructive feedback from our guests regarding their experience of our hotels as we find it to be an invaluable tool for catering for our guest expectations and continually improving our standards of product and service.

I do hope we have the pleasure of welcoming you back to the Derbyshire, when we hope to make amends for your previous disappointment.

Kind Regards

We used the Derbyshire Hotel as a stop gap on our way to another destination and it was absolutely perfect.

Staff were very friends, rooms were very good, breakfast was superb!

I would definately return here again if I was in the area. Very easy to find.

I am a Travel Agent and have stayed at many many hotels, this was a highly recommended one!

I stayed here for a work trip, and there are no major problems with this hotel. However, I find it difficult to give it a great review because of a view little problems. First of all, I was a lone female traveller, and a request had been made for a room that wasn't on the ground floor, but I ended up on the ground floor so I didn't feel comfortable on sleeping with the window open. I admit, I didn't ask to be moved (by the time I arrived I was so exhausted I could barely stand!) but as I stayed on one of the hottest weeks of the year, not having the window open made for a pretty uncomfortable night, and the air conditioning was barely a breeze!

I can only echo what many others have said about the restaurant. I ate here on my first night and ordered chicken supreme. What I got was a grilled chicken breast and a bit of salad garnish - that isn't chicken supreme!! For desert I ordered chocolate bread and butter pudding and custard, but I couldn't find a single bit of chocolate in it, and I'm pretty sure the custard was birds powdered custard (it was that unmistakeable bright yellow!) To be fair though, it still tasted great! There is a brewers fair across the road, and a pub that (I'm told) does really good food about a 5 min walk away, I'd eat there and skip the restaurant.

All that said though, I will stay again. The service was great, the staff friendly, the bar reasonably priced, the room clean and comfortable and the breakfast was great. If you are in the area for work, there are a lot worse hotels you could stay in.

My wife and I stayed at this 4 star hotel for 3 days. It is very well decorated and furnished, with excellent amenities. Although it is close to the M1 motorway, we were never disturbed by traffic noise. But the thing that impressed us most was the BED. It was the finest bed we have ever had the pleasure to sleep in. The mattress and the pillows were a delight. Our next mattress will be the same as the one here. I did sneak a look at the brand, but I'm not telling anyone. You will have to sleep here and experience it yourselves!
The breakfast was varied to suit all tastes, though the quality of some of it was questionable. The bread wasn't fresh and the fried eggs were overcooked.
The bar lounge was comfortable. We had a small glass of house wine each, which cost £7.40p. Three hundred yards across the road at a Brewers Fayre, we had a full bottle for £7.95.
As there is a small fridge in the room, we think it is a good idea to buy your wine before travelling and store it there.
It was a pity we didn't have time to use the well-equiped gym and swimming pool etc. Next time maybe.

I am sorry our breakfast offering did not live up to your expectations, the Chef is currently reviewing with his Team all menu’s we offer to our guests highlighting any training needs to ensure all standards of performance are met.

It was pleasing to read you enjoyed our amenities and you were impressed by our bed and pillows

I do hope we have the pleasure of welcoming you back to the Derbyshire sometime in the very near future

Kind Regards

Very average hotel. Rooms clean but very hot with no means of controlling temperature apart from opening window, being so close to the motorway the noise then becomes an issue. Having read the restaurant reviews I tried to persuade my colleagues not to eat here. In the end we decided it couldnt be as bad as described. unfortunately it is. service was very slow, we got to the point of leaving but the waiter turned up just in time. 8 of us ordered from the very boring and limited menu because by that time we were too hungry to go elsewhere. the food that we were served was just as dull and boring (and very expensive). if you have to stay here eat elsewhere (the castlewood is cheaper and better despite being a basic Brewers Fare ) if you need internet access dont bother here. Extremely expensive (£15), go to the local McDonalds and for the price of a coffee collect your e mail for free. Why is it that big hotels find it necessary to charge for internet access. I tend to stay in small hotels most of the time and it generally comes free. You dont get charged extra to use a Tv in a hotel, these days internet access should be treated the same. Because my company negotiates a discount here I will have to stay here again (but I wont eat here) If travelling own I would book somewhere else

This hotel is an Ideal venue for an overnight stop. It's very close to the M1 and just off the A38. It has a nice clean leisure centre which is ideal to chill out in after a long drive. We had dinner just over the road in a nice but very child friendly Brewers Fayre (Castlewood) both the food and the service were very good. Breakfast at the Hotel is from 7-11am on Sundays which is great if you don't need to rush off. We went down about 10ish and there was still a good selection of cooked items, on a self sevice buffet basis, which were hot, and a decent healthy selection. All in all great value for £43 per night per room.
