“A must visit place if you plan exploring North Eastern India”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2008

I will keep it concise but informative-

How to reach: No matter from where you start, you will have to reach Silliguri (in West Bengal) first. Prefer train journey. The railways station of Silliguri is known as 'New Jalpai Gudi'. Alternatively, one can take a flight to Bagdogra - the nearest airport from Gangtok. From Silliguri, it is 4 to 5 hours journey to Gangtok by bus.

What to See: A good number of ancient Monasteries (Rumtek, Enchey and others) and Institute of Tibetology. Do not miss Banjhakri Falls which is more of a water park. Take pain to get up early to reach Tashi View Point and enjoy the fantastic view of sun rising above the Kanchenzonga hills. Ganesha Tok and Hanuman Tok (temples basically) are really peaceful. You will get a nice view of the whole Gangtok from Ganesha Tok. There is one Botanic Garden which is good to see if you pass by it, nothing very special. Explore Institute of Handicraft where you will find a variety of things to take back as souvenir. It would be wise if you compare prices here with those in local market (which you will anyways see while roaming on MG Marg) as you can come back here again since this place is at walking distance from the center of Gangtok. By the evening, be all geared up to roam around MG Marg which is one busy (and happening) place in the town. Good restaurants, major shops, hotels, Sikkim tourism office, ATMs and the overall atmosphere-All these things make this place a perfect hangout venue in the evening. Extend your walk on MG Marg to adjacent local markets like Sadar Bazar and Lal Bazar, and you may find cheaper deals here (if you are good at negotiating with small shop owners :-) ).

Closing Remarks: A calm and beautiful destination. Full of refreshing natural scenery, both on way and around it. People are friendly, helping and soft spoken. It takes a complete day to explore the main attractions near Gangtok. If you have more time, you must extend your trip to Nathula Bypass, Tsomo Lake and Old Baba Mandir (towards east border of Sikkim) or Namchi and other nearby places (towards south border of Sikkim). My overall rating of Gangtok is 4.5/5.

“Seductive Sikkim:Gangtok is real cool.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2008

It was change of environment that prompted us to gallop across to Sikkim. It was Oct 1st week when we hopped to New Jalpaiguri by train n then by road to Gangtok. One glides along River Teesta to the fairytale city,Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. Its a small hill station;very clean n with good roads & strict law n order.MG Road, the mall at Gangtok is all tiled n bedecked with flowers-on lines of Switzerland towns. The populace is mainly Gorkhas,Nepalis n serene lot 4m Bhutan. The Hotel that sheltered us-Mt Jopuno,is a class apart.Sober yet opulent. Its Sikkim Govt Tourism Hotel, off the MG road.Site of Mt Kanchondjonga from hotel window was terrific. At sunrise the peaks gleam all golden! Its mesmerising n eternal!Tibbetan theosophical museum, the Monastries, the Palace n importantly the roapway to Hanumantok leave lifelong impression of the fairy land!Ride to Nathula leaves one gasping as yhe virgin landscape is too enchanting. It was a cool n very comforting break 4m the humdrum of Delhi. The hospitable environment, beautiful people n the cool ambience beckons you every time that one is pensive.A repeat trip is on cards.

“Great Place to Visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2008

Gangtok, Sikkim s Capital is great place to visit. Nice capital of state. The remarkable thing about is the Cleanliness. The city is Litter Free, Plastic Free zone. Especially MG Road is the great attraction- to move about in evening . From Gangtok- you need atleast 10 days to Visit various sight seeing location around - as Nathula- Yumthanng, South Sikkim, Tsongmo Lake, Pelling and so on . Do visit the Jakhri Fall s through it wont be covered in the Full Day sight seeing on Gangtok. But is it the best place to Visit . Yumthang takes 2 days. It seldom snow s in Gangtok. Climate temperate . Kanchanjunga clearly visible from Here. Dont miss Sunrise over Kanchanjunga at Ganesh Tok. Great Experience. Just be careful of being made to pay higher rates to tourist agencies and rather plan through Sikkim Tourism at MG Road. This being purely tourist place.

It was such an amazing tour to Gangtok the capital of Sikkim that i cant really forget..Our family planned to have an incredicble vacation over there.we moved excitedly. After two days journey reached the destination. Our joy was getting double throughout the way step by steb we were overwhelming by its natural beauty.really it was some more than i expected.Amidst the mountains quiet nature was spreading the serenity and peace as the quiet blessing.
First snowfall of the season.Changu lake Yak riding all were magnificient.kids enjoyed so much that they have beed always ready to go there again.Tista river followed us throughout all the way.Its steep roads were also a part of an adventurous journey.Clouds were embracing us with humid kisses.Giggling of water falls makes often us awakened.
Really it is an mazing place to dine wine and shopping.

“Gangtok-A must place to visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2008

We have just returned from 10 day visit from North East Region of India. We have covered may places but Gangtok, Sikkim is really very beautiful. The hotels Sikkim Retreat is magnificent and we have never experienced such incredible service before. It was so lovely that it we have rated best hotel to go in Gangtok, Sikkim. The places neary by to Gangtok are very well connected and easy to reach with minimum problem. The Traffic sense and controlled vehicle movement is also very nice. The visit to BABA Point (Late Harabajan Singh) which is about 13,000 feet above MSL is really joyful. We have also experienced breathlessness to some of the ladies and on the contrary no effect to some colleagues. The roads are under repar and currently (2008) is bad shape but I congratulating the efforts of Sikkim people and BRO officials who are improving it in length and breadth.
