If you rate a hotel by its surroundings, this won't be the right choice for you. Like a lotus flower, it blooms amidst the dirt and filth of Pon Nagar - a weird Pondy township of disparate bungalows adorned by flowing gutters and filthy bylanes, quite far from the beach and other Pondy attractions.
But once you are in, the ambiance and decor makes the whole sojourn worthwhile. The rooms have been tastefully done although the toilets are rather inconvenient. You'll find the toilet seat at a ridiculous height leaving your legs suspended in air. Wonder whether the maker derived some kind of sadistic pleasure doing that. And the sink is in urgent need of a drainex-like solution Only if one is willing to make the effort. The hotel staff is a mixed bag of the good, bad and the ugly. In Mr. Purshottaman, we found one of the most agile and aware managers who went out of his way to guide us on the optimal driving routes in, around and outside Pondy. Ms Shobha Singh is a responsible marketing and guest relations professional but she needs to improve her proactive communication especially after guests have checked in. The guest, on his or her own, won't have any idea of the workload the staff is bearing. It's simply a matter of extending a warm welcome proactively rather than leaving it to the guest to come looking for you.
The room service is pathetic with erratic cleaning hours that extend to late noons. The reception is virtually non existent as the person in charge can barely communicate. The stony expression keeps you away most of the time. And the breakfast floor is never spot clean during breakfast times. Clearly, the hotel is facing a glaring shortage of qualified staff but that's an universal problem throughout India. Can't be an excuse especially when the guest comfort is largely compromised. The support staff needs a refresher course in customer service and interaction. The food is excellent - one of the redeeming hotel features and the cook deserves all praise for the inspiring innovation (try the beet rot halwa and you'll agree) Another positive is the kind-hearted watchman of the morning shift who doubles up as the car wash guy too. Do tip him handsomely - not that he demands it, he deserves it for sure.
The administration is a sorry state of affairs - it's left to the guest to cite the specifics of the online payments made. Agreed the hotel doesn't have a cash refund policy, the abrupt manner in which it is conveyed leaves much to be desired. We won't advise prospective guests to make unduly long advance bookings (we booked in October for the December stay) as the hotel is quite ruthless in the event of schedule changes that call for a refund. Not that we expected a cash refund, the manner in which the settlement was made was truly disheartening.
All in all, a good experience. Hope the next time we visit, things would change for the better.
