I need to start this review by saying that we had a good time at the Villa Mandi hotel and think that it ranks above average, but has the potential to be so much better.

First the positives.

The villas: - very modern and spacious and the general surrounding areas are beautifully maintained.

The reception staff: - There are some excellent reception staff at the hotel, very friendly and helpful. A nice feature of the hotel is that for some of your taxi trips you can pre-pay at reception thus saving potential disagreement over price.

The Reps: - One rep in particular, Kristina, is very knowledgeable about the local area. She was incredibly helpful, gave me directions on more than one occasion and will even make some very good recommendations if asked.

The day time entertainment/Kids’ club : - The usual sort of thing you’ll see on most holidays, but the entertainment team (Channice, Mario and Katie) do it with never-ending enthusiasm, never pushing if you don’t want to join in. Our youngest really enjoyed his time at the Kids’ Club, even if some of the activities were not really age appropriate for him. The chocolate party was really good (cost 5 euros)

Swap Boxes: - There are a few Swap Boxes at the hotel where departing guests can leave anything they don’t want to take home. Before you go the supermarket to get that inflatable, check the swap box first….and don’t forget to leave it when you go home so someone else can appreciate it.

And now, the part you really want to know about, the negatives!

Food Prices and Quality: - almost £4.00 for a small portion of greasy chips. That’s serious daylight robbery. Even Dick Turpin had the shame to wear a mask! I don’t mind paying the price if the good are worth the cost.

Pool Loungers :- They either need to purchase more or enforce their ‘No sunbed booking’ rule. I arrived at the pool one day at 9:20am and had the entire pool almost exclusively, despite every single lounger having a towel on it. It was like a scene from the Twilight Zone, had all the other families been transported to another time and dimension while their belongings remained trapped?! The towel that lay on the bed next to me all day had a lovely relax in the sun while its owner disappeared for the day returning at about 4:00 to take it home, there’s only so long even a towel can sit by the pool. I realise that the hotel can’t be held responsible for the selfishness of others but they have the rules in place to control the issue. If they can’t face the conflict they could encounter they know how many guests they have, so increase the number of beds.

The Maid service:- This was very patchy. Initially the maid wouldn't make our beds or change the kids’ sheets (they were from day 8 onwards). I don’t think the floor was ever cleaned. It would seem that the maid’s job consists of replacing the towels and removing the bin. My wife nominated herself as the employee of our stay for her fine work in keeping the villa clean! Things did improve later in the holiday (change of staff maybe?) and, on the days we struggled for time, the beds were made for us. I know some maids work harder than others because we spied next doors doing dishes! (some people have mentioned an ant problem, we had a few but nothing we couldn't handle. We also found a couple of cockroaches during our stay, but again, nothing we couldn't handle.)

The hotel supermarket :- I realise that shops attached to hotels are usually pricey but the one here is ULTRA expensive. For example, you’re not likely to get much change from 6 Euros for a small loaf of bread and a litre of milk. There is a fine line between premium pricing and extortion and the hotel certainly crosses that line. It’s fairly amusing that the management have managed to turn one of the negative aspects of their hotel (the distance from the nearest town and shops) into a money spinning venture. Anyway, save yourself an absolute fortune and do all your shopping at one of the local supermarkets. There are excellent directions here http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g659661-i12269-k6394594-Villa_Mandi-Los_Cristianos_Tenerife_Canary_Islands.html#48828753

The evening entertainment: - On the whole it can be summed up in one word… EMBARRASING! Some of the entertainment team try their best but they are joined by less than enthusiastic members of the kids’ clubs. It’s never been so obvious that some people are not comfortable with what they have been asked to do. Unfortunately, some of the ‘professional’ acts don’t fare much better. I suppose if you've had plenty to drink and a large crowd to share the experience with it could all seem so much better, but, yet again, the Villa Mandi insists on draining every last cent from your pockets rendering it impossible to get even slightly merry. They may not be Broadway standard shows but it certainly is Broadway prices at the bar (2 Euros for a small coke, 12 Euros for a jug of Sangria mainly ice, fruit and lemonade). Seriously, if they just lowered the prices more guests would stay and enjoyment of the poor shows would increase through blurred vision!

Sundry Charges : - I know i've moaned an awful lot about money in this review but it really did annoy me that they insisted on charging such high prices for everything. 30 Euros for the safe, about the same if you wanted extra TV channels etc I don’t mind paying, but you have to give value for money and make it worth the cost or else I will take my custom elsewhere.

Some people viewed the distance from the hotel to the main tourist area as a problem, but in reality it's only a 15/20min walk (and that's with a child in a buggy) and is quite enjoyable in the evening. There is some wasteland, but if you follow the directions given in the link above it really is a very small area and nothing to worry about. We didn't see any ferral dogs or tramps.

As I said, we did have a good time at the Villa Mandi and I would recommend it…but with reservations. I felt that, rather being seen as a valued guest, I was seen as a walking Euro waiting to be squeezed for every last cent. Don’t ‘Nickel and Dime’ me (to borrow a phrase from the Americans) because I don’t like it!

Room Tip: Room 105 is in a lovely location, very close to the kids playground and away from the main pool area...

Just got back from 2 weeks at villa mandi. I'll keep it short, rooms good size. It is a real issue with the cleaners they was in our rooms only at least 10 mins each day floors not getting washed feet alway dirty.dont think our bathroom was ever cleaned while we was there. Ants is a real issue there in your rooms they are everywhere. Food is terrible and not worth the money. Thompson rate it a 4* there is no way 2/3*at least wont be returning.

Firstly the only reason this place did not get an excellent is the sun bed issue, but this is not just the fault of the hotel this would be down to people placing towels on beds and not actually using them! These would be the people queing up in the morning putting the towels down and the not returning til the afternoon, Selfish!!! There are limited parasols and there were some familys of four that would have no problem in using two of these leaving people with smaller children with none!!

We had room 103 it was fantastic. opposite the park so our six year could play and we could sit and relax on the patio and watch him. Also this side of the apartment block is quiet and away from the pool and with our room it was in the shade all day so did not get hot at all.

Yes the hotel was a 20min walk to the resorts but that wasn't an issue as taxis were cheap but we walked most nights just to walk off the fantastic food eaten there. The shop at the hotel was expensive but a 10 min walk and there is a supermarket offering everything and cheap.

Two restuarants I would throughly recommend are one in Los Cristianos, El Cine near the port up a side alley near the pharmacist. It is fish only but was so cheap and delicious the best i've had in a long time, dont expect alot on the menu but thats why the prices are cheap and the other is in Playa called Embrujo more expensive but the steaks are to die for and they have live flamenco each night which is fanatastic.

Siam park was great but the larger rides you have to be over 1.20m, but my little one had a great time as there was plenty for smaller ones to do, we had a fab day.

Lastly the kids clubs and reps were fantastic our 6 year old loved every minute of it and loved the reps.

All in all a fantastic holiday.

Room Tip: Room 103 if you have children quiet but opposite the park so you can relax and watch them play also...

The rooms are lovely and spacious however the beds are really uncomfortable.

The Entertainment team are fantastic and full of energy and the kids reps are brilliant.

Food in the hotel is terrible DO NOT EAT HERE

Location is a little bit of an issue if you want to just 'pop out' for a meal its 15-20 mins walk although the walk itself is quite pleasant early morning and late evening.

Hotel staff vary from Mr Grumpy to Mr happy to Mr I don't know what the **** you are saying.

Siam park is brilliant however don't book the boat trip with Thompsons as can get it for half the price in Los christianos. We found the other trips to be slightly more expensive with Thompsons however not that much more.

Wouldn't return just didn't like Tenerife in General however this is personal preference.

Hotel perfect for young family's who don't want to leave the complex however would recommend you look for a hotel nearer the town centre if you like exploring

The roast house in Los Chrsitanos Is lovely for a carvery and home made chips and gravy!

Whilst we feel this hotel is good we feel unable to score it as very good! We are a middle aged professional couple with a 7 yr old daughter. We had a good holiday overall after staying at Villa Mandi for two weeks in July 2013, however we would not return. As the brochure says, the hotel is a good 20 minutes walk to anywhere and 30 to the main centres. With smaller children, high temperatures and not exactly scenic locality, this isn't great. The hotel itself was very pleasant to look at architecturally, with very well kept gardens and everywhere was always kept clean ( in spite of some of the less than clean guests). The two main pools were a bit crowded and as others have said, the surrounding tiles are deadly slippy. Another thing about the pool was the depth- the shallow end was only about 1.1m so our daughter couldn't really play ball games without standing on the steps or holding onto the side. Better for 10 year olds. the main pool was also quite cloudy for several days. The rush to bag your sunbed at 0900 was degrading and many then stayed empty until mid afternoon- many people were very thoughtless, bagging beds for a whole family when the kids spent all day in the pool not on beds. There were pool tables, table tennis and a very good little playground for 8yrs and under. The apartment was very spacious with a large kitchen dining area, lounge end with bed Setee and large bathroom and enormous main bedroom. Room facilities and equipment were ok. Wardrobes and cupboards could all have done with some shelves! The air con in our room was pretty useless but to be fair we didn't give the hotel a chance to correct it if that was possible. We ate in the restaurant four times and whilst the quality was ok, the choice was small and the price was high. The drinks in the bar were quite expensive and some of the cocktails came ready mixed - yuk for a 6euro tequila sunrise and the house wine at 2E a glass was very rustic! The staff were generally all very helpful and polite. Some were really nice but some could do with smile lessons. Entertainment was mixed - daytime was pretty good and our daughter enjoyed a few goes in the kids club. However the evening shows were definitely at the low end of what's affordable. The reps night entertainment was also pretty terrible. They tried.....We ate out in some cracking restaurants ( watermelon and meson castellano)and had some superb plonk / charcuterie from the local supermarket ( 8 minutes). This was roughly half the price of the on site supermarket, which whilst having a comprehensive stock and superb fresh morning croissants, was very expensive. We had great fun on the medieval night out and the waterparks and zoos are also great. Any security issues seem to be resolved, with regular rounds by a freindly night guard and good locks on dors. Overall we had a good time, but there are other places to go which offer better value and less imperfections.

Room Tip: Room 113 away from the pool, ground floor, easy access and sight to the playground was good for us.

Had a great week here with the family and don't believe any negative comments as there are always moaners who want to whinge about anything

15 minute stroll to Los Christianos or Las Americas and 3 or 4 euro in a taxi and plenty of them to go around

We used the top pool which was quieter and need to be down for 8.30 to get loungers but worth it

Only ate in the hotel on the last night and food was good but waiters were too keen to get your plate away

Hotel supermarket was expensive but good for basics and a large Supermercado just down the road to get everything you need

Very helpful staff and all speak English and the pool guy in the morning is a legend

Reps there when needed and not in your face as lost sunglasses and very helpful with reporting to police

Siam Parc is a must and great for the kids.

Couple of great restaurants Watermelon in Los Christianos and Cafe Paris in Las Americas and reasonable prices. Mc Donalds and Burger King in Las Americas if you want a cheap and cheerful meal. Watch the sun go down on Las Americas beach with a Smoi frozen yoghurt again another must

All in all loved all aspects of the holiday and seven of us there
