“Beautiful Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2012

Despite the windy road that takes you through this Gorge, the scenery and walks are well worth it. The Gorge is not long and the roads are easily negotiated. You really should stop at the information centre towards the Northern end of the Gorge to get some history on the gold mining in the area and there are a number of historic walks that you can take varying in length from 20 mins to a few hours. They take you through countryside that was well mined in the 1900's and is full of old buildings and workings from that time. If you are not in to walking the tracks then this is still a wonderful place to sit by the river and have a relaxing lunch. Well worth a visit.

“Bike it or hike it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2012

Hired our bikes in Te Aroha at "Outdoor Adventure" from Allan Turner - (07) 8844545
-good deal at $40 NZ a day- comfy bikes ,very new with good gears and well padded sprung seat- youll need it( take a back pack with water) Allan took us out to the start of our trail 21 kms from Te Aroha in his van and we rode the loop track approximately 26kms - really beautiful scenery along a fast flowing, clear mountain river . The track passes through pasture land at the start of the trail and then follows the river up through the gorge. You cross a number of swing bridges and ride through the 1.8km tunnel that passes through the mountain. I had a light on my bike but the tunnel is lit -the only traffic are walkers and bike riders . The tunnel comes out on one side of a long bridge which you cross The trail passes thorugh a gold mining area with tram tracks still intact and some of the old gold mining equipment lying around in a very pretty paddock. A gold mine museum is set back off this area - not sure how good it is as we did n't go in. The gorge is steep sided in parts with forest on one side and a road on the other. At the end of your ride you come to a cafe at a quaint train station - try the char chicken apricot chutney burgers . The coffee is good (we are very particular and hate weak or burnt coffee) and the raspberry pop tarts are the best, with a centre pool of hot raspberries surrounded by the most delicious short crust pastry - we were hungry and this cafe was terrific . The whole trek there and back with lunch at the little station took 4 hours stopping to photograph the beautiful river gorge waterfalls and all.

“One of the best short routes in NZ”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2012

We have done the ‘windows’ trail and it was fantastic; bridges, tunnels, natural vegetation, old gold-mining facilities, high cliffs; everything in 1 hour route suitabe also for young children. In my perspective- one of the best routes in NZ.

“Awesome Walks”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2012

The Karangahake gorge walks are an awesome experience and well worth a visit. We had sunshine, the heavy rain a week before had the river roaring, and the contrast of lush forests and pitch black tunnels was amazing. All tracks are very well maintained, good signs to follow, and plenty of info about the mining history. We enjoyed it immensly.
