A delightful surprise. The hotel and its grounds are carefully thought out. The architecture befits rural Spain - not a bland vanilla monstrosity. The grounds are thoughtfully planted with specimen palms, cacti, ficus etc The pools are picturesque and inviting. Just don't jump into the infinity pool. It is bladder challengingly cold. Alright for post sauna types. No need to do early morning towel raids. Plenty of sunbeds to go around.
The room beds are very comfortable but inexplicably furnished with bolster pillows. Hastily ordered proper pillows. Couldn't find anywhere to plug the kettle in so grovelled under the desk for the requisite socket. Staff all very attentive smiling and helpful. Great mix of cultures. Mostly Germans so standards high. Met a delightful Brit couple who have been back several times. There is an artificial beach and seawater lagoon with bar. A sign hopefully directs you to a beach but be prepared for a long walk and it is literally just a beach. Nothing else. In the other direction is La Calma. Not much to say about it. Some of the hotels look soulless and designed by a toilet block enthusiast. Better beaches with uninspiring beach eateries. Back to the hotel. Good spa facilities with treatments on offer. Evening entertainment in a bar theatre. Carlos primero served theatrically by the waiter. Beatles tribute surprisingly talented, salsa evenings, disco etc. Sad a video of Suzi Quattro and Chris Norman is still playing to adoring crowds of...well..not Brits. Hey ho. Food is plentiful and varied in the large uninspiringly laid out overlit restaurant. Nods to different cultures. A bit canteenish. Outside is more charming with patio heating at night. Pigeons snaffle the food of the unwary. This is also a conference hotel - big time. So be prepared for hyper incentivised goodie bag wielding sales wallahs invading this tranquil space. Just about to sign this off when one of the animation team said I look like a Top Gear presenter. I could so suddenly diss this place. But I won't. Highly recommend this oasis.

this hotel is a 4 star hotel but value for money. The staff are very helpful and happy.food is good fresh and hot. Eating outside in the evening under gas heaters to keep you warm is delightful. The manmade beach area above the sea where you can sit and watch the waves crash against the rocks is bliss.
Ive stayed in 5 star hotels costing double the price of this hotel and they dont come near the joy this hotel brings.
For first time in 20 years were going back to a hotel weve stayed in before and its this hotel thats won us over.
Yes its on a hill and yes theres not a lot to do in area so hire a car their cheap and roads are easy to drive on stress free
So i look forward to coming back this march for great service good food peace and quiet and most importantly VALUE FOR MONEY! !!

Just returned from a week here, and to be honest, I'm glad to be home! The hotel is nice enough, but not worthy of the 'superior' status it gives itself; just a good 4*. The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable, though the bathroom towels need to be replaced with new ones as rather thin/worn...The pool towel was much nicer, but if you wanted to change it during your stay you were charged 1 Euro each time. I did get a pool towel, but then it was a struggle to find a bed to put it on, as they were normally all taken (even though you weren't supposed to reserve) by 8.30am each day...

As stated in other reviews the clients at this hotel are predominantly German, and the staff favour them above everyone else. In the buffet restaurant there was a different theme each night, such as German, French, Italian, but no British...I wonder why? Need to name drop here, as we found one young lady serving in the buffet restaurant to be really exceptional - Josi thank you :-) ; plus one waiter in the bar - Alvaro thank you :-)...

The hotel is fairly remote as it is situated on top of a hill, overlooking the sea, a good 20 minute plus down hill walk to the small town/village of Costa Calma, where there is nothing much to see/do, so it's not a place to visit if you want anything other than a quiet holiday. A taxi ride back (to save the aching legs) is around 3-4 Euros, and it's worth it if your carrying water back from the Supermarket. The hotel does have a couple of shops, but the prices are literally double those of the Supermarket, as are the drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). If you have any kind of physical disability, this hotel is not for you, as internally there are 2 lifts, but in the grounds it's mostly steep steps..

As stated in previous reviews the nightly entertainment isn't that good, so we found ourselves retiring far earlier than on normal holidays...

Overall I would only recommend this holiday if you want a week in the sun doing absolutely nothing, and don't mind being ignored by the other guests - I did try and engage with them but very grumpy holidaymakers :-( I don't like to generalise, and this is just my opinion, however, for most people I would say avoid this hotel and region of Fuerteventura. Sorry Rio Calma, but you don't get my vote!!

Room Tip: 7101/7102 have good sea views, but are above the disco/entertainment, so can be noisy.

Okay so the decision to have the honeymoon is hard and for us R2 was the chosen one.. we went there on December 2013 ignoring all the weather statistics on previous years... we saw the hotel on trip advisor and then on many sites review... so let us stop you right here and tell you, it is the place to go - no regrets for sure.
Staff are friendly and nice (English seems to be as third language after Spanish and German) but they do all they can to smile and help... Food is amazing ... really good we had only half board (no other choice on Thomas cook that year) and it was more than enough so we basically thought that we are using the hotel beauty more than food and drink but let me tell you half board was more than enough ... the weather on Dec was okay, we had tan so that's a great news... we had also free entries to Spa so that was lovely and enjoyed the other 4 swimming pools as well... so there is (kids swimming pool, main on with lovely view not heated though, long though the hotel pool which is heated and then the sea salted water swimming pool which is nearest to the beach not heated) there are also mini-golf, gym, tennis and everyday different morning activity with the hotel staff entertainment... Beach near hotel is not for swimming or laying down... but 5 min walk away there are some good sandy beaches, what we have done we used the bus which is 20 min trip to get to the best beach with big town centre... we also went to Oasis Park which was quite fun I think Meerkats and Elephants were our high lights... what we have done is pick the worst weather day and went there... so that was a great strategy.
Okay so here some good news for people how like to Drink and to Eat Ice cream and Chocolate... we had nice bottle of Champion on our arrival (maybe special for our honeymoon!) and then every evening there were free champion for everyone and always there were unlimited supplies of delicious food with fruits, ice cream and chocolate.
Great Hotel, Great Experience, Nice Staff and highly recommend.

Room Tip: We had 7118... so it is sea view level 7.. the view with sunset and sunrise was lovely.

Just returned from a week in this beautiful hotel and grounds after our first visit May 2013. We returned to Rio Calma as we were so impressed on our first visit - unfortunately not as good this time round. Hotel, grounds & pools are stunningly beautiful and extremely well maintained as noted by other travellers. Our room was on the 7th floor with fabulous sea views and the most wonderful sunrise every day - idyllic!
Unfortunately there was a negative side to our room - directly above the disco room and the external seating area - very noisy at night with double doors constantly open until after midnight. Just a shame the pianist in the bar area finished at 10.30pm latest during our stay as this was much more in keeping with the quality and ambience of this standard of hotel. However our enjoyment of the pianist was ruined every night after dinner by what can only be described as a 'pack of deranged hyenas' (aka a group of young children tearing around the various levels of the hotel screaming and shouting, going up & down in the lifts and running through the guests seated in the cocktail bar narrowly avoiding collisions with the busy waiters with trays full of drinks!) No parents in sight & staff not saying a word. Again, not what you would expect from a hotel of this calibre.
We agree completely with the comments regarding sun loungers!!!! As stated 'you can't beat them' as we had spent four days seeing towels placed before sunrise and by the time we had finished breakfast at 9am, not one lounger was available. Signs are quite clear on tables adjacent the sun loungers, as well as noted in the hotel information in each room, but whilst staff allow this without taking any action, then this will continue. We have stayed in hotels where this is not permitted and staff have actively removed towels if guests don't use the loungers within 15 minutes!!
Overall, a wonderful hotel but we are concerned that these little annoyances will detract from the star rating and cause standards to slip too far, thus spoiling what should be an absolutely marvellous holiday experience.
We would love to return as we thought we had found our ideal retreat but just a little concerned after our last visit.
Come on R2 hotels - pull those standards back up to allow those of us who enjoy everything this hotel has to offer to return without any concerns.

The care taken in the planing, the thought for the location, the expertise in developing such a prefect hotel, you will be amazed at the stain glass window, the main reception is beautiful, the rooms are perfect, you must swim in the lagoon now that is amazing, the food is perfect and then the staff are just so helpful too, truly an amazing holiday. Looking forward to returning.

Room Tip: They are all good
