“Great Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2014

Visited on 01/02/14-08/02/14 with my wife and what a fabulous time we both had the service at the hotel is excellent although we felt check in was a bit on the cool side however the staff in the restaurant are absolutely fabulous very helpful and service spot on. The room was of a good standard and brilliant view of the sea. The only major problem we found was that it is a little isolated and on top of a hill not so good for people with breathing or health problems but a great visit overall and would definitely go back and recommend

I stayed at the R2 with my wife and 2 friends for a weeks break away from the rain and gales in England. We weren't disappointed as both the hotel and the weather were excellent . We stayed at the hotel on a half board basis which was ideal as we hired a car for the week and were out all day and back for dinner. The hotel was spotlessly clean and the extensive grounds were kept in tip top condition. The food was via a buffet service which offered a big variety of hot and cold dishes with a 'theme' meal each day. My wife is restricted to food she can eat (no dairy, wheat, or anything from a pig) and she had no problem as the food was very varied and there was always something for her. All of the food was of a really good standard which was shown by the extra pounds I put on over the week!

On the down side (and there wasn't much to complain about) the evening entertainment centred around the bar in the reception area which lacked atmosphere and had a limited number of seats and tables. The pianists were excellent but in the main the area was suited to senior types with little evening entertainment for younger guests. There was a separate large entertainment area with bar but with so few people attending, it was totally devoid of atmosphere and you could only feel sorry for the entertainers. The hotel is on the edge of Costa Calma so away from access to local bars and entertainment.

All in all the hotel was great for people who wanted to relax and be away from the resort centre. The stunning grounds with beautiful pools kept many people at the hotel for the duration of their holiday.

We would certainly go back and will recommend to our friends.

Room Tip: We had a sea view room on the 7th floor. The room was large and the view was great.

I would say 5☆if they would change bed linen every other day.
Except for that I felt like I was given 5☆service.
Highly recommended for families with small children as a lot of entertainment and professional staff is given.
Delicious food and leasure facilities.

I spent three weeks at Rio Calma on a work trip and I have no desire to come back. When I first arrived I felt so lucky to be spending three weeks there, especially because work was paying for it but the rude staff and poor quality food completely overpriced ruined it for me and my co-workers who were there with me.

While the rooms were nice and the view indeed gorgeous, the quality of the staff was abysmal. Whenever I asked a question to the concierge they were condescending towards me and unhelpful. I'm in my mid-thirties but I look young for my age and I know that they did not give me any respect and feel qualified to talk down to me because they were older than me - totally unprofessional! If you want to use the internet, be prepared to sit on the balcony because the rooms are a dead zone for any sort of connectivity. On occasion the cleaning staff would forget to close my door after cleaning it, so there is a lack of care in general. Avoid the restaurant by the bar! The food tasted like frozen food warmed up in a microwave. This resort is good on paper but just be prepared to take advantage of the grocery store that is about a block down the road otherwise you're spending twenty euros on food that tastes like cardboard. Overall, I'm sure there are plenty of other resorts to go to - save your money and go where the staff will be sincere in their niceness.

Room Tip: Room overlooking the pool and the water is beautiful - but it's also near the bar area so can be...

Stayed for one week in January 2014, half board package with Thomas Cook Holidays. Great hotel in extensive grounds around 1km from resort "centre" (there isnt really a resort centre...) but there is nothing but scrub land between the hotel and the resort.

Pool areas extensive, and despite the warm, sunny weather, we did not experience any problems obtaining sunbeds at a sensible time of day, unlike some other reviewers. Breakfast and dinner were buffet, we found the food good - particularly liked the freshly cooked to order omelettes at breakfast - and the dinner buffet varied from day to day. You would have to be a very fussy eater not to find something you liked.

Hotel room was of an acceptable standard, balcony looking out over the pool area and the sea. Towels could have been a better quality - this is a four star hotel after all - and some of the furnishings were a bit tired. Go for higher floors and for rooms where the balcony has balustrades rather than a wall, for best views.

Staff generally very friendly and helpful with one or two exceptions, the reception staff could have been more friendly and one of the restaurant staff was very cool in manner, but this was the exception.

A few areas for improvement however. Firstly the weekly charge of 16 Euros for room safe. This surely should be provided free of charge in a hotel of this standard. Secondly, the procedure for pool towels was unbelievably bureaucratic. Pay 10 Euros at reception, get a chit and a stamp on your room card. Take to pool area, hand over paperwork, collect towels. At end of stay, same procedure in reverse. This was not explained on arrival so meant a trek up to reception to begin the process. Why not just take the money at the pool area, they do sell ice-cream etc there so must have facilities for handling money.

Thirdly, the entertainment. This varied from the excellent (flamenco evening) through the bizarre (Chinese circus) to the indescribable (parrot show). Why do hotels always feel the need to produce entertainment? The size of the audiences was an indication of the lack of popularity. Finally, the wifi. As others have said, it was variable and only free in reception, which meant that after dinner the bar/reception area was full of guests using the wifi. Again for a hotel of this standard wifi should be free across all areas.

To finish on a high note, the hotel has a small, enclosed botanical garden. We found it a really relaxing place to spend time in in the evening, especially when it was candle-lit.

To sum up, we had a really enjoyable stay but the surrounding landscape was uninspiring. For a week of winter sun in a nice hotel with good food though, this is a good option.

We also went on the free "PAL" excursion. Unlike some other reviewers, we enjoyed this. There was absolutely no pressure to buy anything - and we didn't! - but it was a good way of seeing more of the island without paying for a "proper" excursion or hiring a car. We were fortunate however that this hotel was the last pick-up/first drop off so we were back on the sunbeds by 2.30!

Room Tip: Higher floors have best views, also rooms with balustrade balconies enable you to see the views bett...

This is a lovely hotel and the grounds are beautiful with plenty of access ramps. Downside were lifts - only 2 with just enough room for my mobility scooter plus a couple of able bodied friends. Only other fault inside was with the dining room, a lack of accessible tables. The lower beach is accessible but very steep on the way back - take an able bodied helper ;-). Having said all that would go back tomorrow

I stayed there for one week.
The hotel got a realy beautiful tropical garden.
The gym is good. The spa a bit small but so far okay.

the food is good. The service is good.
The location is very good.
Nice beaches on the left side. But very windy.

Room Tip: I stayed in Room 6143 which got partly seeview but no balcony. The TV need to be replaced.
