“Here now, sorry to be leaving”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2013

Just finishing a week here @ the hotel. Had a great time. Was a bit quiet, not least its November, but no less enjoyable for that.

Food is good, service good, rooms a bit small but well furnished and clean.

Some other reports say the staff are a bit moody, but if you just make an effort with them, they are more than ok with you.

The hotel has lots of things to do and a private, man made beach. We liked it.

Just one downside, the wifi and broadband are very slow, to unusable. There is a premium pay service but this is no better than the free service. If you want hi speed broadband just walk down the road to the Costa Calma Beach resort. Bang on wifi.

We did drop in on some other hotels in the resort just to have a look around and we were more than happy with the R2 Rio.

It's just on the edge of town so relatively quiet, but easy walking to main beaches.

We plan to come back next time we want a relaxing, quiet break.

Stayed here on vacation for 11 nights. The start was not promising! Upon arrival, late, we were quickly through reception. Sadly, our room key cards didn't work - can happen at any hotel, but required a return to reception, to the back of the queue. A saved meal in the dining room was poor - no bar service, poor quality food. Good nights' sleep in the well appointed bedroom. We appreciated the extra touches like the complimentary beach bags and the mugs filled with sweets. Also, it was refreshing to have a kettle and tea/ coffee making facilities - not common in Spanish hotels in general.
The next morning, breakfast was fine and continued to be throughout our stay. Similarly, after the poor meal the previous night, dinner was consistently good, with an appetising menu, the theme of which changed daily.
We quickly found out the shortcomings of reception however. For the avoidance of doubt -
The safe needs to be rented at reception - a key is required to make it lock.
The pool towels need to be sorted at reception - a deposit, 10euro per towel , in cash!- must be left at reception, then instructions followed to acquire the towels elsewhere. Note there is a 1euro charge to change towels during your stay.
WiFi is available free in the reception area, but is quite slow.
There is a book swap area in the shop near the pool.
If this information had been passed on arrival, a lot of toing and froing would have been avoided.
Now to the very good bit. I was rather disgruntled to lose most of a morning sorting the above issues. The response from the manager was superb. It would be unfair to give precise details, but suffice to say, I was completely satisfied. I have no doubt that the management are intent upon guests having an excellent holiday.
Other good bits. The gardens and pools are beautifully landscaped. The infinity pool is just the right depth to swim in, even for poor swimmers. There is a lifeguard on duty during the day for even more confidence. The lower pool and sandy areas were our favourite, mainly because we could always find a sun lounger. Beware, though - there is a cost of 3 euros per day per bed here. The upper sunbathing area fell prey to the towel brigade by 0800 every morning. Pity.
So, back to my title. If the reception staff communicated a little better and there were more sunbeds, I would have no hesitation giving this hotel 5 stars.
Quick observation re Thomas Cook. No rep aboard the bus either way to hotel and return. No rep for quite a lot of the days we were there! In his absence, we booked a hire car via the hotel reception. Fine.
At the welcome meeting PAL, a 'sleep system' company were touting a free island trip for an hours' opportunity to sell us whatever. They didn't turn up on the day. Neither they nor the rep had the courtesy to offer us feedback on why. I obviously wouldn't bother with them again.

Room Tip: Our room on the 7th floor was quiet and comfortable.

Check-in was fine and swift. Room had sea view as requested - although somewhat dated, we found the room to be large enough. Food was average - breakfasts were bountiful but dinner was vey hit and miss, mainly miss. Ended up having lots of salads and cheese and crackers as the look of the meats left me cold. Good selection of desserts. However I have to point out when I got back from holiday that I came down with the worst food poisoning I have ever had. I cannot figure out what food has caused this but suspect it may have been at breakfast, as my partner also got sick and we tended to have different foods for dinner.
Pool is ok but no sunbeds as other guests insist on reserving those with their towels. Lagoon fine on my first outing but towards the end of the week, it was very dirty with lots of algae etc and I did not stay around for long - they clean it on a Sunday.
The worst part were other guests, large groups of a wedding party and also of a company outing which completely spoiled our stay with the constant noise and taking over the whole of the hotel. Management and our rep werent' very helpful.
Also the hotel was too isolated for our liking. Nearest resort Costa Calma is a 15 minute walk away and as it is rather hilly and of course hot, this didn't make for a pleasant experience. We took the taxi back at 3 Euros a bargain. Costa Calma itself ist not much to look at either. Save your time and money and head to Jandia - approx 30 mins away by taxi, which has more shopping opportunities plus better beaches. Beaches around the R2 hotel were mainly rocky - a 15 minute walk along some dirt track takes you to sandy beaches, which were fine.

Staff in the restaurant were hit and miss as far s service is concerned. Some worked out better than others.

Overall, I would not stay there again. It was good for taking astron pictures at night due to the lack of light and the weather was great throughout our stay. However the lack of facilities makes for a very isolated holiday.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 6th floor upwards as this is where reception is, also try to have a room away...

Lovely hotel, very big and clean. lagoon area is very nice.Waterfall is lovely - some impressive features throughout the Hotel and grounds. Staff friendly and helpful. great relaxing holiday.Piano bar in the reception area really enjoyable in the evening - so relaxing to sit and drink/chat and listen to the Pianist play a selection of music.
Room nice good sea view, lovely little extras in the room on arrival which is a nice touch.

Not fussy eaters but the food was very disappointing on an evening - very salty, buffet style ..but managed to find something to eat.
Disappointed that Thomas Cook advertise an a la carte restaurant - there is one on site but its not open or advertised - my husband asked and was told by the staff there was only the buffet restaurant, we asked the rep to make sure we had been understood correctly and he said it only opens occasionally and recommended some at the other end of the area.

Don't expect to get a sunbed by the pool area unless you take an alarm clock and get up before 7:30 you won't get one.. We met someone who had gone down at this time and managed to get the last 2......a real issue with the hotel. We went down to the lagoon every day which was lovely. It should be 3 Euros a bed/day but we showed our card and it had Hamacas stamped on it the guy came around and said English and walked away we eventually realised we didn't have to pay for sunbeds so obviously the hotel had put this in place but we preferred this area as it was quieter.

Tried the Spa this was nice.

Costa Calma is a very quiet area there is not a lot to do in this respect so is great for a relaxing holiday, lovely beaches with some interesting sites (anyone that has been there will know what we mean :-))

I will finish by saying We thoroughly enjoyed the holiday and really enjoyed the piano bar to relax in the evening, all staff are very friendly. We had lots of laughs and a totally relaxing holiday which is what we wanted. The only thing we felt disappointed with was the evening buffet - but that was our opinion. Other reviews are mixed on this and we had read them before we went out so wasn't completely surprised, but at the end of the day we went on holiday for the break and the weather not the food.

Nice stay, but the reality wasn't as beautiful as expected on the photos. The food was good but hard to find fresh things to eat. The desser also wasn't their thing but on the whole part they fulfilled our needs.

First stay in Fuerteventura and after reading the reviews chose the Rio Calma for a week from the 9th October and so glad we did. What a beautifully designed hotel this is with super facilities including shops, entertainment and wonderfully gardens and pools our favourite being the manmade lagoon.
The food was buffet style with both indoor and outdoor tables and the standard was exceptionally high, we are fish eating vegetarians and there were lots of options available , to cater for so many at such a standard was an achievement.
There is wifi in the reception area free, we also chose to pay 25euro to have in the room but disappointingly this only allowed the use of one device. In the evening we chose to relax in the reception area which has a bar and professional piano player every night, drinks and indeed anything you choose to buy in the hotel are at reasonable cost. We chose here for the peace of the area and if you want shops you need to travel to Morrow Jabila which we did, there is a regular bus service but we chose to rent a car available from the hotel. We went with Thomas Cook who were very good, the trips looked ok but we're not for us particularly the PAL free! Trip that I could tell had a forced sale element to it. Would we go back? You bet we will and very soon, a real gem on this beautiful island.

Room Tip: We were on reception level which is 6 with a balcony and great sea view

We were at the Rio Calma the first two weeks in October (2013) and had a great time. The staff are fantastic and service was great. There are three outdoor pools (one sea water) and a spa centre all of which we used and enjoyed.
The food is exceptional for mass catering and we always found something to our taste. The rooms are good, have air conditioning and are well soundproofed. All in all a great place for a relaxing break.

Room Tip: Try to get a sea view
