We had visited this hotel before (in 2006) and our memory of our visit at that time was good and so, when we found the same hotel appearing on our web search at a very good price we decided to take the plunge and go back again. We are glad we did for we had a truly lovely holiday.
However, if you are looking for a lively holiday we would say that probably this is not the holiday for you. If you are looking for peace and tranquility in lovely surroundings - then Costa Calma is the place to go! There is little outside the hotel in the way of entertainment. What you do have though is a most magnificent beach with flat firm sand where you can walk in the early morning or late afternoon. If your ideal holiday activity is a good book and a very comfortable sun bed (with free mattress!) then you will have a super time.
The hotel is almost 10 years old now and whilst it is kept immaculately clean and tidy there is just a hint of 'tiredness' creeping into the decor.
We had read reports about surly staff but from the moment we arrived until our departure we found the staff extremely helpful and friendly. We asked for extra pillows and on our return to the room they were there.
One great surprise was the quality of the food. Again, we had read some negative reports on food quality. I am a non-meat eater and I had absolutely no problem finding lots of lovely meals. My husband loved the show cooking where there different meat or fish dishes on offer. The 'free' wine is in ample supply, but it is best quaffed in moderation - not the best we have tasted!
As far as the entertainment is concerned. It is probably best to go with the attitude that it is SO bad that it is entertaining. We watched in horror one evening when a team of 'Fakirs' (fire jugglers) entertained and there were blazing balls of fire flying everywhere except where they were meant to go. It really was embarrassing ...and dangerous!! The 'Animation Team' were the source of most of the week's 'entertainment'... and I guess they work long hours for little return. One night we had 'Grease' and on another occasion 'Saturday Night Fever'. These 'shows' involved the playing of a loud CD, about 6 of the team leaping about and miming (badly) and lots of shouting. Hmmm....... enough said!
Surely the star of the week was the barman who works in the bar just outside the entertainment room. This guy is totally amazing. Despite the crowds waiting to be served he never once missed serving people in the correct order AND from the very first drink he then made a mental of note of your order which was then served every time you moved near the bar!! - whether you wanted the same drink or not!
The visitors to the hotels in the locality are mainly German/French. We didn't find this a problem at all - although, they don't often smile! (Why?) And.. much to our amazement towels were NOT placed on sunbeds in the early morning!
We reluctantly went along to the Thomas Cook introduction meeting which was incredibly boring and such a waste of time. The rep was most keen on selling you telephone cards!
We are going to post a few pictures which we hope will give you a good 'feel' of the hotel and surroundings.
One last comment... it seems to us that 'attitude is everything' when going on holiday. If you go expecting to have a great time you will have a great time! If you go looking for things to complain about you will surely find them!
Have a great holiday! We loved it!
