“Great Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2006

The Sands Beach villas are great. We stayed in Key Largo which were a bit worn but fine. The Plaza or beachfront seemed to have been refurbished and alot better. Although the apartment was adequate and had everything you could need Fridge freezer, microwave, TV, ironining board and iron ect. The Hacienda restaurant on site was also very good but you need to prebook this before 5pm on the same day. the mai tai bar near the beachfront also serves nice snacks but is only open until 6pm. The pool areas are nice but the sunbeds a bit worn and the umbrellas need changing!!! Nice pool for small children though. The lagoon beach is great for kids and never seemed too busy. I would also recommend a trip to the water park in costa teguise as this is great a;though a bit expensive 35 euros per adult and 20 euros for children. There are plenty of restaurants within a ten minute walk from the hotel. The beaches further up seemed nice although very windy so not good for small children. The evening enertainment was good with childrens entertainment going on for about 1hr. The adults stuff is also suitable for children to watch. They have a good childrens club with a chocolate party on a sunday!!!
Overall this was a good holiday, although next time i would go for an upgrade to a plaza villa.

So glad to see there were more good comments made recently as we would have been put off if we'd visited this site before we went. We had a fantastic holiday at the Sands Beach Resort. Yes, the weather was breezy but this was a refreshing wind which kept temperatures down at night (although if it does get hot fans can be hired from reception). The staff were, on the whole, very friendly and helpful and the maids were very courteous and thorough. Always an English speaking receptionist and someone around to ask. There was a well-stocked shop with plenty of English stalwarts such as Heinz beans, etc. Get in early if you want freshly baked bread rolls as they go quickly, also they never seemed to have stamps but there is a post office about 5-10 mins. away. The Hacienda restaurant, Mai Tai Bar and Soleil Bar were all excellent in their own ways. The caberet was not really our thing and the disco emptied out as soon as the children left. Restaurants outside are close by and cheap, the Chinese restaurant near the Tex Mex was good value and high quality, as was the Columbus Tavern also nearby.

The only small complaints we have are that we went a bit close to the children breaking up from school and there were lots of them in the pool screaming and misbehaving but then we are a childless couple and at least they were enjoying themselves. TIP: DON'T BOOK TRIPS THROUGH RECEPTION AS THEY ADD ON A SUBSTANTIAL FEE, instead walk down the main road (as you go left out of the hotel main reception) and you will find a direct tour booking company (prices on display in the window). We can recommend the South Tour but the North Tour was a bit dull apart from the caves (Cueva de los Verdes) which are spectacular if you like that sort of thing. TIP: If you take American Express travellers cheques the Banco Santander Hispano (sorry can't remember the proper name) outside the resort don't charge commission, whereas reception charge 3 Euros per time.

All in all, lots to do, we were there for 2 weeks and didn't get bored once. Will definitely return and we have no qualms about recommending to friends and relatives.

Like most people reading this I read all the reviews and wondered how on earth people at the same hotel could have such vastly different views.

I have just returned from this hotel and I now know why??? As this was my first trip I booked Key Largo - hey it was a family offer!! On arrival the hotel looked very nice but at the room it was a different scene - for Key Largo read - old, run down and not suitable for small kids!!

Having holidayed in Florida for the past 12 years I was devastated - however I have to say I complained to the Duty Manager who was excellent and we were promptly moved to the Plaza Villas. These are lovely, newly refurbished, bright and with a small but adequate kitchen. We looked out at the pool and were able to sit on the verandah and watch our children play in the pool.

We had a lovely holiday and the only thing I would advise is - if you're confirmation invoice says Key Largo get it changed to Plaza Villas- it is well wrth the difference.

We stayed at SBV from 15th -22nd June 2006.
Having read some of the comments we were also 'worried' yet confused as the pictures of the Resort looked amazing.
We stayed in a 1 bedroom beach front Bungalow.
On arrival we were greeted warmly by the staff they were helpful, efficient and very friendly. The entrance and reception are stunning.
So far so good. We made our way down to our accommodation walking through the Plazas. It was all spotlessly clean and looked well maintained and safe.
Our accommodation was very pleasantly situated overlooking a tidal lagoon with a pristine beach, we later observed the nightly ritual by a young man who took great pride in this task of raking/combing the sands, organizing the sun beds and removing any rubbish.
Beyond the lagoon were views over to the promenade walk into Teguise and out to sea. Our 1 bed roomed villa was very spacious, clean, light and well furnished. Almost all you needed for SC living if necessary.
On a closer inspection.......
Here are our constructive criticisms - we are not 'holiday groaners'.
The sheets were almost 'threadbare'
The bathroom suite we felt was in definite need of replacing the bath was obviously cracked and leaking underneath.
A couple of the kitchen units were suffering from damp, we thought leakage from the bath may be the reason as the kitchen backed on to the bathroom.
We did have occasional visits from cockroaches, in the kitchen, was this damp?
One armchair was very grubby.
Attention to these problems would be well worth the effort.
SBV is a stunning complex a ‘tiptop’ spot for holidays.
In spite of these niggles we did have a wonderful holiday; SBV is a great place to go. We felt relaxed and chilled. We would definitely think about going back again.

We just got back on the 29th Jun and we had a great time at Sands. We where self catering and the rooms where well supplied. We never ate in the Hasienda but the Mia Tia was great for food as we ate most lunch times, and the prices where very good. the hotel is very well suited for for families with young kids and middle aged and older not suited for teanagers in my opinion as it may be a bit quiet. The only down side we found was my wife opened the bedroom curtains and found a rat on the window sill, but this could happen anywhere but to be fair to the hotel they reacted very quickly with getting poison down so we did not mark the hotel down for that, as they wanted to move us straight away but we wished to stay where we where. it may of been different if we had left the bedroom window open. But all in all we had a great time and would go back to this hotel.

Great hotel, I have been holidayng here for the past 8 years however I was most dissapointed when I was wrongly advised (on purpose) on how to get to Tequise market. I will explain!

To get to Tequise market you simply get a bus across the road outside Los Zocos (1 Euro per person) howerver when I asked reception they said you have to get a bus into Arrecife then to Tequise market? They then said they do a bus trip there for .......wait for it 12 euros per adult and 7 euros per child ... oh they through in some sangria afterwards!

Fantastic hotel but a shame they are not being sincere, other then that GREAT!!!

After reading this site many times before going away we were seriously worried about what to find when we arrived but we needn't have worried. We stayed in a 1 bedroom plaza villa which was definately worth paying the little extra for. There were just myself and my husband but the villa could easily have catered for 4 people it was that spacious (pull down double bed hidden behind mirrored doors in lounge and double sofa bed too). A really big lounge, kitchen with microwave, fridge/freezer and dishwasher, excellent bathroom with 2 sinks (so we had 1 each) and nice big bedroom with double bed and fitted mirrored wardrobes. The villa was very well decorated and furnished and exceptionally clean. On our patio we had a table and chairs and one sun lounger but that's all we needed as the pool was directly outside our door. The plaza villas are surrounding their own pool for that plaza (we stayed at Palmeras Plaza but there are 6 in all) so we only had to share with another 20 villas in our area so there was never trouble with getting a sun lounger (some plazas have more villas and the ones with apartments are two storeys high so there's a lot more people to share the pool with). The pool was big and clean with a kids pool to the side. We had great weather the first week but as there's a great breeze all the time it wasn't too hot at night which is ideal as there's no fan/air con. Reception is very impressive and the staff were really helpful and spoke excellent english. Good supermarket on site and a lovely restaurant called the Hacienda (which also does takeaway). We didn't use the Mai Tai bar/pool area but it looked really nice and there was also a caberet club (again we didn't use this). There was loads on offer if you wanted it with tennis etc but no-one bothered you so if you want a chill out time it's no problem. There's also a Movie Channel with a new movie on every 2 hours for the full 2 weeks so you're never stuck for entertainment even if there's no sunshine outside! Costa Teguise was lovely but fairly quiet however some fab restaurants to try are along the beachfront and up the hill slightly - Casa Blanca, Lani's Cantina Tex-Mex and Portofino. The best chinese we found was next to the Punta Jabillo shopping centre and is called Siglo 21st Century. The Bailey Irish Bar is slightly further round on the beachfront and the staff were really welcoming and remembered you which was really nice. We hired a car for 44euros for the day (approx £30) and toured the island which was well worth it - Timanfaya National Park is out of this world and Papagayo is beautiful but be prepared for the rough dirt track road to it. Go to your right when you park as that's the best beach but it is a real trek over and down to it. All in all we had a fantastic two weeks and Sands Beach was really superb - we would go back in a minute!
