“Definitely not a 5 star but a nice hotel all the same”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014 via mobile

We arrived after the Christmas break (13.1.14) and the hotel was fairly quiet. Despite being expected checking in took some time but the staff are friendly, competent and eager to help. The hotel has the beautiful garden running through the atrium but this does make walking around within the hotel rather cold. The landscape around the pool is fairly harsh and I would say unsuitable for children or anyone in need of a walking aid, bed blocking around the pool wasn't a problem due to the rain but damp mattresses were as they are not put away at night even when heavy rain occurred; guest took to folding them between showers to try to keep them dry. Noise in the halls at night were another problem as the bedroom doors have to be banged to shut and heels echo down the marble floors. On the plus side there were free salsa, Zumba, Pilates classes etc in the small but nicely equipped gym and staff were always friendly and helpful. The location is lovely with lots of bars and restaurants and the local square is a must at night without outdoor entertainment and a market twice a week. All in all very nice.

My partner and I chose to have a break in Lanzarote this New Year in order to get some much needed winter sun. Our trip was from 29/12/13 to 03/01/14. It did not start well, as our original hotel accommodation in Playa Blanca was neither good, nor what we expected. We were faced with re-arranging our accommodation or returning home and contacted the Melia Salinas reservations team on 30/12/13 with little hope in our hearts that they would have a room free. We were amazed when they found us a room for the rest of our trip. This was arranged quickly and without fuss.

We were utterly delighted when we arrived at the hotel and met the welcoming and friendly team. Our room was in an excellent position with a stunning view of the pool too. The hotel is fantastic example of 1970's brutalist architecture with an incredible open air garden inside the main building. Although we had aspirations to travel further from the hotel, we enjoyed it so much we did not need to bother.

We had a wonderful experience staying at the hotel and particularly enjoyed the New Year's Eve meal at Esencia Canarias and the celebrations afterwards. The food in the main grill was of an excellent standard, as was the breakfast. The facilities were great. The hotel team were excellent and really made our stay, they also saved our holiday! We cannot thank them enough.

We loved it so much we hope to return again next winter.

This hotel was ok but definitely not a four star, the room was ok but it reminded me more of a travel lodge than a four star hotel. Everything was white and plastic. The walls are paper thin so it was quite noisy. It said it was fully air conditioned but this was a fan hidden by a vent in the roof space so not proper air conditioning and it didn't work very well. The food was adequate but very samey. We were on an all inclusive basis but had to sign receipts for everything which became a pain and made you feel like you were going to be charged. The entertainment apart from one night led a lot to be desired. The staff were efficient rather than friendly and helpful. If I go to lanzarote again I would stay elsewhere.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2014

Rooms: Roomy, clean, definitely dated but couldn't complain when the views were that lovely. They're not five star quality but it's more than adequate for a pleasant, relaxing stay and the balconies feel secluded.

Location: Right on the beach, very convenient to multiple supermarkets, restaurants and other activities.

Activities: Beautiful pool which was somewhat let down by multiple parts of it being roped off during our stay (in July 2013) and building work occurring poolside throughout the afternoon which sometimes wasn't that relaxing! Nice gym fronting onto the beach which was almost always empty but offered a pleasant break from the mid-afternoon sun.

Bad points: Unfortunately the gym was also the site of one not-so-great event! My sister was using one of the weights machines and a large metal bar suddenly came loose and hit her hard on top of the head. We told the managers about this and while they were happy to provide ice once requested, they didn't say much by way of apology and sort of just shrugged it off. While she was thankfully fine, that was genuinely dangerous so hopefully there's more regular checks of equipment being carried out.

Good points: Excellent buffet for breakfast with loads of gluten free food available which was a nice surprise as a coeliac. Pleasant staff overall who were there if you wanted them but not overly intrusive.

Overall it's a nice hotel for a chilled out sun or family holiday and we enjoyed ourselves. I'd say it's more suited to late 20's/30's upwards as if you're looking to party, it's extremely quiet in the evenings and you may be disappointed.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2014

We booked 2 weeks at the hotel had carried out a lot of research based on the Hotel web site, plus Trip Advisor.

The Melia Salinas overall met our expectations, we went for a Junior Suite and I e-mailed the hotel letting them know this and asking for a room facing out to sea and also asking if we could sometimes have lunch rather than a evening meal as we were on half board. The hotel replied saying that they had taken note of my requests which they took on board, hence our room high up.

We arrived at the hotel and went to reception where immediately offered refreshments and then a Level staff member came to greet and check us in at the level reception area. We were explained all of the facilities’ which came with staying on the Level. Staff members were very polite throughout our stay. In all parts of the location, Vanessa gave us a call a few days in asking if everything was okay. A Special mention to Carlos in the Spices Show Cooking area and Pablo on reception for their politeness.

Although quite a bit more money we found the additional cost well worth it, the Level swimming pool area was very good and the first week was very quiet, the second leading up to Christmas as normal became very busy in the entire hotel. However the use of having the Level pool area and the availability of having beer, coffee, Tapas brought round, cold drinks readily available at no extra was a pleasant surprise. The breakfast offered a very good variation of food/drinks which was also nice sitting outside. The same applied for dinner, most tables were for 2 but the staff soon accommodate if more guests were groups. Again pleasant service, a very good variation of food. If someone cannot find something they like from the show cooking its beyond belief. Our room (415) looked out over the between Play Charcos and Playa Cucharas. Some days we just chilled out on our balcony and watched the windsurfers doing their thing.
We ventured into the Esencia Canaria Restaurant which was well worth paying an extra 45 Euro’s each, if you were not inclusive or like us on half board it would been a lot more. But they have a musician playing and we thought the ambiance was very good. We never tried the Marea Restaurant, 15% off if again you are half board, we took a look on several nights and it appeared not many guest used it, the overall appearance was bright and seemed to lack what the Esencia had, but again we never eat there so it may be well the cost on the menu.

As others have mentioned a good Hiper-Dino supermarket (one of many in CT) is just on the opposite to the main hotel entrance, we used this for drinks etc, they have a good range of news papers and others stuff if you are staying in one of the many apartments around this area. The No.3 bus stops the other side of the road from the hotel which will take you to Playa Blanca, it runs regularly and stops on the way back just outside the hotel entrance. If you feel like taking a walk you can go from the hotel turn left and start one of 3 coloured walks which are marked out, they range from 4.6km to 10. You can get the map from the tourist office quite a way up on the left on the Av Del Mar, you need to look as it’s difficult to see. You can read more about these walks on the web site www.lanzaroteinformation.com.

We went with Thompson’s, the rep was new to this area but was very polite and helpful.
We thought the balcony to our room needed to be revamped, the beds needed to be replaced and our windows were very dirty which obviously gets a lot of sand being blown onto them when its windy, which some time occurs quite often, so we think some effort good go into cleaning these more often to brighten the room up. The actual sliding doors onto the balcony need to be replaced as on 2 nights when the wind really blew these were banging as they were not sealed units. Not a big issue but you had to be quite carful when using the large wardrobes as they would easily bang shut if you just let them go shut, although noise from other room occupiers the second week was not an issue, perhaps they were being considerate as well one hopes! I would also just say to the Hotel Management (I am sure Vanessa will reply to this) bed blocking occurs around the Level pool area, as I have said this was not an issues the first week but when it got busy the second week numerous beds were left for hours on end with towel on them, it’s no use just having a sign saying items will be removed after 1 hour, it does not happen. Also the signs state that no shorts should be worn in the Spices, and yet I saw a family with 2 teenagers walk in one night and wearing normal beach wear shorts, no staff challenged them, to us this 5 star hotel it should be happening. This family by the way also started using 6 beds around the Level pool area when their numbers were 4, so if this family is reading this get some manners!

Apologies to some for this long review, it may be useful to some travellers as well as the Hotel Gran Melia Salinas, and by the way we would recommend this to other travellers. It’s only our opinion.

Room Tip: Up grade to the Level

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2014

We spent a week at this hotel and did definitely not regret our choice. Why?

1. Location: It is right on the beach. Certainly not the perfect beach, but nice, sandy and close to quite a number of restaurants, shops and everything else you might need during your stay. Moreover, the hotel is perfect if you want to explore the island - which you should.
2. Building: It is definitely not a new building, but an impressive one. The lobby with its 'botanic garden' is a sight to behold and makes for a nice stroll. Some minor repairs and some fresh paint would make it much more attractive, as it can't rely on Cesar Manrique's fame forever to attract guests.
3. Rooms: As far as the need for renovation is concerned, this also goes for the rooms. However, the rooms are well-equipped, clean, comfortable and quite large. They offer all the mod-cons you might want or need. We enjoyed the comfort of a 2-room suite and were more than happy with everything - including the jacuzzi on one of the two balconies (even though the paint was peeling inside the tub). There was even a small 'kitchen' with cups, plates, cutlery etc. Excellent.
4. Pool etc.: The pool is quite big, nice and clean with lots of space around it. Great. The only disadvantage: Don't expect to find a sunbed/deck-chair if you arrive at the pool later than 8.30 a.m. They are all taken, i. e. there are towels, but no people. The guests occupy them early in the morning - just in case...
5. Food: We took the half-board option and did not regret it. The food (breakfast and dinner) is buffet-style, but everything is fresh, much of it freshly prepared while you watch, and plentiful. There is a small, but good selection of wines in the evening. Of course, given the size of the hotel, the restaurant is quite large and lacks a bit of atmosphere, but that is acceptable.
6. Entertainment: There is a nice bar with live music or shows every night. Worth a visit (or two).
7. Service: This is probably the really weak point: In all areas of the hotel there are people who do an excellent job, are friendly and knowledgable - and there are some who don't. And this applies to all areas (reception, room service, cleaning staff, restaurant etc.) It is certainly not easy to find a sufficient number of motivated and dedicated people for all these jobs, but sometimes we thought that a 5-star hotel could do somewhat better in this field.
8. Overall experience: Nevertheless, we had a most enjoyable stay and would give the hotel 12 out of 10 points in the 'value for money' category.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2014

We booked this hotel on lastminute for the week of New Year's Day , as we were already familiar with Melia hotels in Spain .
For the price paid (rather three stars) we had a room three stars , but in a five star hotel - that is better than the reverse. The five-star rooms (" The Level ") are certainly very good ( the website photos of the hotel show only these superior rooms , not "classic rooms" ) .
Our room "classic" was a bit small , well maintained but obviously 20 years old . The room itself is 150sq feet + 100 sq feet for entrance , bathroom , closets ; and a 80 sq feet terrace overlooking the sea, but to see the sea , you must be at least on second floor which was not our case . The hotel is built in a very special "V" configuration and a withdrawal on each floor, the rooms are very quiet as none were actually superimposed on another . Only the sound of the doors ( too old) is annoying.
The bedding was perfect , two large twin beds 1mx2m , a large flat screen TV with Spanish channels , German , CNN , BBC, RAI but unfortunately for us not French channels, only France 24 and Tv5monde .
Dated bath with shower, very little water pressure and almost cold water in the afternoon .
The furniture on the terrace (two chairs and a table) are functional but worn.
Finally, in our case, the headboard was broken, and the safe was never in working condition despite staff maintenance.
Some parts of the hotel are a bit outdated ( canopy bar for example) but overall the hotel is a 5 star. But , no sauna even if some signs indicatings sauna remain in the hotel.
We found that there were not enough people at the reception on Sunday , a big day for arrivals. Staff speak English properly , rarely French , and some are fairly friendly. Besides documentation and written information about the hotel are very inadequate.
Generally the hotel, as the island is very popular with German and English or American . There are more and more French also .
The hotel location is very good ( better than nearby Hotel Beatriz , for example), close to the beach and shops .
We had half board : huge breakfasts and dinners let no opportunities for the many surrounding restaurants! The restaurant has a very large and varied buffet , with three distinct areas : entrees, main course, dessert ; fish and various meats are grilled and made to order : perfect. Bills for beverages are signed on papers you do not keep a copy : so you do not know ( easily) prices.
For the rest, the fitness center is ok , the large pool is very nice with plenty of sunbeds ( but not sufficient ) , there are large common areas with chairs and tables , bar, etc: a five-star hotel.
For the money we paid, we are quite pleased with our stay at this hotel , especially as in the price was included New Year's Eve (excellent dinner and very well organized ) and we regret not trying rooms " The Level ".

Room Tip: If you want to have view of the sea, ask for at least second floor.
