“RS500 :)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

First time on a Warner holiday and I loved it. For years, since we had kids, we've tried various different holiday formulas; villas, hotels, apartments etc...and always I have found myself frustrated by the lack of easy access to watersports. Mark Warner, as many of you know, solves this by providing all inclusive access to a whole range of modern dinghy's, windsurfing boards, canoes and paddle boards. The great thing is, there is more than plenty to go round thus keeping the completion in the right place, on the water. Boats range from a Pico all the way to top of their top of the range RS500 and there are a whole range of windsurfing boards and sails. Everyone is catered for from kids to middle aged water adrenaline junkies. RYA courses are also offered at incredibly reasonable prices so when your kids are having lessons, you can play. The staff are amazing. I've sailed and rented kit from many resorts around the world and I reckon this crew are one of the most professional I've encountered. No hassle, no queues, rigged boat and no packing away, all done for you with a smile and good hearted attitude. Makes a change from hiring off some grumpy geezer who thinks he's doing you a favour taking your money for the privilege of sailing his out of date kit. Truly genius. Talking to some of the Warner 'veterans' Kos is the most stocked in terms of kit, add to that a pretty constant force 4+ (often 5+) in the afternoons then I'm sold. I also peddled a bit and took one of the mountain bike tours, my wife played Tennis and got into Pilates and my sons did their RYA courses. All good. In fact from a social aspect I found the mountain biking the best way to meet people, there is more opportunity to chat whilst 'doing', at least when not pumping up hill. Not once did I talk about work, why would you when there is so much common ground on the activities front. The hotel was clean, with spacious interconnecting rooms and the food quality was fantastic. Meals are however buffet, so be prepared for the hassle that comes from uncoordinated hungry families all wanting food at the same time. The hotel itself isn't Warner run (I'd guess 50% Warner guests) but the staff were really friendly and helpful. I did feel the hotel struggled with the sheer numbers of people, the restaurant looks like a badly designed canteen, the general decor uninspiring and the use of it's seating and hanging out areas unimaginative. I believe this impacted the 'vibe' and could be why we will only return for a week rather than two and also means I dont score the overall holiday as a 5. Also lots of complaints about lack of wifi in the rooms and where it did exist (in the lobby) was often unavailable or at best slow. As for the Warner clientele, well of course we are very well behaved bunch. Almost exclusively families at this time of year with a heavy teen presence due to the wide range of activities on offer to keep them busy during the day. The demographic is very Home Counties driven no doubt by price and the types of sports offered. To be honest I'd personally prefer more diversity but until sailing, windsurfing and tennis become more common place across social spectrum's then I suppose Mark Warner will attract a certain demographic. But I am generalising of course. Mid week I bumped into a like minded adrenaline junkie itching to get a bigger fix in a faster boat. The last two days were spent sailing the RS500 alternating between helm and crew in force 5 winds. On the last day we ditched the sailing regatta and opted to free sale out on the ocean accompanied by a few windsurfers similarly chasing their speed fix. What a boat, we didn't want to stop, eventually we were politely asked to return to shore so they could pack up. That boat left us tired wet, bruised and happy and I guess that's part of Warner ethos, you take and make what you want out of a Warner holiday. We we can, we will definitely go back.

We went with our two teenagers 15 & 17 as they both like to sail and are sporty. Brilliant holiday. They did beach volleyball, waterpolo and football daily in addition to the sailing, bike riding, wind surfing and scuba diving. Can not give enough praise to the Animation team in particular Stefano and Lalli.

This was our second holiday with MW. Last year we went to Levante. We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment.

Pros:
1. Excellent child care, could not be faulted.
2. All MW staff helpful and smiling.
3. Sailing excellent with good winds almost every day.
4. Mountain Biking with Brad was excellent, good fun guy and great scenic and interesting routes.
5. Rooms very clean and well serviced.

Cons:
1. Food quality and choice average or lower compared and to other MW hotels.
2. Hotel dated
3. Queues for a table in shade at breakfast since over half of the tables are in the sun with no shade or AC.
3. Life guard at the main pool was frequently distracted during the day with helping maintenance people and pedlars selling sunglasses etc around the main pool. Note he was not MW.
4. Wifi was free but slow.
5. You do have to pay for towels for the week, which is unreasonable since your paying £1000's for a holiday.
6. Limited shop and very expensive, for example brad towel 45 Euros.
7. Family 24 hour kitchen basically had a fridge and smelt.

We booked our first holiday with Mark Warner and went at the start of July for 2 weeks (family of 4). The holiday was just fantastic from start to finish. The hotel was excellent - the staff were very attentive and friendly. The Mark Warner staff were all excellent. Special thanks to the nannies, Mandy, Victoria, Charlie, Amelia and Amanda in particular were just great - our kids loved them. The sailing was fantastic. I also really enjoyed my biking trips with Brad - best job in the resort! The food was excellent. We will definitely be back next year.

Fantastic family holiday from start to finish. Worlds apart from our first family (Thompson) holiday. Despite resort being full, it felt far from crowded. Kids beach and adult beach with inclusive water sports available, various sizes of boat and canoes. Pay extra for sailing courses or tennis coaching.
From the minute we boarded the (BA LHR) plane we relaxed. The Mark Warner staff are numerous and extremely friendly and helpful, from airport transfers (you barely see your bags) to kids club and evening entertainment, which included kids theatre, discos and beach parties.
The whole atmosphere is as close as you can get to a smart adults holiday, but kids come too! Very relaxing and the food is of a good quality for a buffet and varied choices. Kids can eat tea earlier than adults and then be taken in their pyjamas for a sleep club where you collect them later sleeping!
Have booked to go again. This year!

Just returned from MW holiday. Nice hotel but large and lacks the "club" atmosphere of other MW resorts.
We had a suite in the hotel which was comfortable, clean and well appointed.
MW brochure stated free Wifi in room but in fact only available in public areas and then very intermittent.
No real complaints but not my favourite MW resort.

We travelled with Mark Warner - having been with them several times before. This was not the same as previous experiences - and having been to MW Sardinia last year we were disappointed in the Lakitira hotel.

This is not a Mark Warner exclusive hotel - though MW do provide a lot of the ancillary services. I'd guess that MW guests made up around 30%-40% of the total guests. Restaurant and bar staff seemed predominantly eastern european – presumably to handle multi-lingual dealings with the wide spread of guests (predominantly UK, Germany, Russia, Poland).

The MW staff were as ever friendly and hard working. Particular mentions to the watersports, diving and fitness staff who were fantastic.

The winds in Lakitira are pretty strong (for a relatively novice sailor), I didn't enjoy the sailing as much as Sardinia but serious sailors would do. In fact the winds were so strong there was regular damage to the dinghys, and the rescue boats were very busy much of the time dealing with capsized dinghys.

I think the beach was disappointing - you're OK if you're on the sand, or a way out to sea, but the near shore is heavily littered by large pebbles which are very slippery and painful to walk over. The MW staff do a fantastic job to help but this deterred me and the kids from wanting to go into the water. My advice is to take waterproof shoes/ boots.

Also the beach beds and umbrellas are way too close together, you can hear lots of conversations and cigarette smoke is annoying.

For MW regulars beach towels here are chargeable at 12 Euros for 2 weeks rather than being free. This caught us off guard though if you look in the brochure you'll see it doesn't state free beach towels.

Also, you won't get the normal free table wine with meals – and unlike Sardinia there is no Coke/ Lemondade available for free at the evening meal. The (evening and breakfast) buffet in the main restaurant is pretty canteen like – plenty of choice but somehow lacking in the quality we've had in past resorts. I suspect the main restaurant is too small and crowded so it ends up noisy and frantic rather than relaxing. If you wait to eat it is better. We went to the on-site taverna once – with a 60 Euro supplement for the four of us but there is much better fare and service available in Kardamena. The Italian restaurant was also disappointing. The bars have plenty of choice but it's at a cost.

Compared to other MW resorts this was expensive – our family of 4 over 2 weeks added over 1300 Euros excluding the optional watersports/ diving courses we did. That is way more than previous MW holidays have cost us.

Overall I would not return to the Lakitira. We have previously been to Kos and loved it – that was at a Grecotel. If you're into sailing this is maybe the place to head for but otherwise I would recommend choosing somewhere else.
