We (a family of 4 consisting of my parents, my fiancé and myself) arrived at the Sunny View Hotel at around 11pm (Greek time) and were greeted by the lovely little Sunny. Sunny is the resident dog at Sunny View, she doesn't like the sound of suitcases on the ground, she doesn't like suppliers of the hotel or people with large bags. When she sees/hears these things, she usually starts to bark which is the worst thing you will experience with Sunny. She really is a lovely little dog and wouldn't hurt a fly!
After saying hello to Sunny and the guests that we passed, we went to check in at reception. We were checked in by Frantzis. They do take your passports when you check in but you can request these back at anytime, without any hassle. My dad asked if there was any chance of us being fed that evening as we hadn't eaten since we were at Gatwick at around 1pm (GMT). Katerina said that she could make us a quick sandwich each but nothing hot as it was so late in the evening. Whilst ordering our drinks, we were informed that we could have Beef Stifado if we wanted, we all said yes! The Stifado was beautifully cooked and came with chips or rice (we only had the option of chips due to the time). The price for the Stifado was 7.95€ per person.
We had 2 rooms between the 4 of us and our room door handle fell off. We got used to closing the door carefully and then just genuinely forgot to mention it. One lunch time, we were sitting in the bar and the cleaner went to go into our room and the handle fell off. Frantzis immediately said "I am going to fix your door handle now, I keep forgetting!" and off he went. We never had a problem with it after that.
The rooms are basic but very clean and include a bed, a fridge (ours needed to be plugged in which was easy enough to do), a hairdryer and a TV.
Breakfast is continental and there is plenty of it! It is served between 7.30am - 9.30am. Coffee, tea, orange juice are the drink options (you can purchase other drinks from the bar). To eat, they offer fresh rolls, bread, cheese, ham, butter, jam (strawberry, cherry, apricot and orange marmalade), tinned peaches, cornflakes, coco pops and Madeira cake. There is a toaster if you want toast. Alternatively, you can pay 3.50€ for a fried breakfast, 2 sausages, 2 eggs, beans and plenty of bacon! If you order within the breakfast times, you can have the toast, coffee etc as well if you wish. If you order outside of the breakfast times, you can pay 5€ for the fried breakfast and get 2 slices of toast, tea or coffee and orange juice.
The hotel offers "Happy Hour" twice every evening, 7pm - 8pm and then again at 10pm - 11pm. During this time, cocktails are 2.50€ or 3 for 7€. Mythos and Fix beer is 1.50€ instead of 2€ as is Ouzo and Lemon.
I personally didn't have any problem with the WiFi in our room, it wasn't a strong signal but it worked fine for me. Frantzis does love his football and will show every match he possibly can, if you aren't sure if he will be showing a match you want to watch, just ask him and he will be able to tell you.
Tuesday night is BBQ night! It really is so much fun. For 12€, you can have as much salad and meat as you can eat. You then get given a traditional Greek sweet. Its a fantastic way to mix with the other guests. After dinner, Frantzis sets up the Karaoke! I had never done karaoke before but it was hilarious, we all got involved and just had a really great time. We couldn't wait for the following week!
Bugs and creepy crawlies weren't a problem whilst we were there apart from the mosquito's, a few people had infected bites including myself but that can't be blamed on the hotel, its just the way it is! We saw a couple of black crickets at the hotel which are similar in appearance to cockroaches....until they jump/fly at you! They were completely harmless however. A few wasps around (horrible looking red ones) but leave them alone and they won't cause a problem.
I have read some of the reviews of Sunny View where people have said that the owners only gave them the time of day if they were eating at the hotel every night. We ate at the hotel a couple of times not counting the BBQ's, we were out every other night for dinner in Kardamena and the family treated us exactly the same as people that were eating at the hotel every night.
The family were always interested in where we had been if we had been out for the day and they always asked if we had a good time etc. When we went out in the evening, they would ask where we ate, what we thought of the restaurants etc.
We felt that we could easily speak to any of the family, ask their opinion on restaurants, sights and excursions. If there's anything you want to know about Kardamena or Kos, ask George or Frantzis, they will be happy to tell you about the history of the island etc.
The hotel is situated on a main road, next to a potentially dangerous junction. The 2 weeks we were there, we never witnessed an incident. The hotel is directly opposite the bus stop for Kardamena/Kos and is where the coach will pick you up for any excursions you book (if hotel pick up is provided). The bus to Kos costs 3.20€ per adult and takes between 30 - 45mins depending on the driver! If you turn right from the hotel, walk a little way down the road and take the first right turn, you can walk straight down to the beach (takes about 5mins). If you walk along the beach, you can walk to Kardamena in about 30mins. This walk is really nice and there are a few camouflaged bunkers along the beach which is quite interesting!
If you don't want to walk into Kardamena (or don't want to walk back), a taxi costs 6€ each way. You can ask George or Frantzis to call for a taxi for you from reception/the bar.
As you can see from a lot of the reviews, Sunny View gets a lot of repeat guests, we were one group out of maybe 5 other groups that we spoke to that were there for the first time. Every one of these groups said they would definitely be going back.
After 2 weeks with Frantzis, George and Katerina, they feel more like friends than owners of the hotel. They will do anything they can to make your stay as good as it can be. If you have any issues or problems with anything in the hotel, tell Frantzis and he will sort it out for you as much as he can.
If you like cocktails, Sunny View offers almost 60 different ones. None of which are made with the ready made cocktail mixes unlike most restaurants in Kardamena.
Air conditioning is 6€ per night and we found it extremely worth the money!
Thank you George, Katerina, Frantzis and Sunny for such a fantastic 2 weeks. It was my first visit to Greece, it definitely won't be my last. We will hopefully see you again next year!
