We're on the last day of our 2 week holiday which we have loved.
Location: not for you if you want somewhere lively or where you can walk to the shops. Free shuttle to the nearest town of Kardamena though. Overlooking the beautiful sea with a couple of smaller islands across the water. Stunning scenery.
Rooms: we had a standard room which was fine, extremely clean, mini fridge and a terrace with good seating (not plastic!).
Food: very typical of a good quality AI - they're trying to cater for so many different tastes, nationalities, cultures etc that it must be difficult in the main buffet. We found there was plenty of choice and we were happy with the quality. We ate 3 times in the Asian - yes we liked it! Also, a couple of lunchtimes in the Greek Taverna. There are snacks available at the beach bar during the day and some in the pool bar as well. There's also a Gelateria where you'll find a good selection of ice creams and drinks.
Bars etc: in the evenings we tended to go the the lobby bar, comfortable seating and a good choice of drinks including a wide range of cocktails. At lunch and dinner, if you want wine, they bring the bottle! The pool bar is comfortable too, with shaded areas to get out of the sun if you want. The beach bar is surprisingly spacious, clean and comfortable. The live music in the lobby bar each evening was pleasant, good but not intrusive. We didn't go to any of the organised entertainment so I can't comment on that.
Service: we feel we've never been to a hotel where we could say that EVERY single member of staff was very friendly, helpful and efficient. Congratulations to whoever is responsible for staff training. We've been to some excellent hotels, had some really good service but this definitely came out as the best ever. Thank you. It's almost unfair to single anyone out but the cleaning staff are great. The porters were excellent. Penelope, who works in the buffet restaurant and George - usually in the lobby bar, we're superb, as were all the staff in the pool bar. I notice that someone complained about the wait in the pool bar - yes, sometimes we had to wait a few minutes, but we're on holiday and in no rush. Waiting in these beautiful surroundings has been no hardship!
Pools and beach: there are 13 pools including an indoor one. They're all kept spotlessly clean, in and around the pool. There are enough sunbeds- just! But more would create that 'sardine' feeling I think. Although there are notices not to reserve sunbeds, this was ignored and we saw the ultimate - 2 females taking the beds into their room at night (they had a ground floor room with a terrace straight onto one of the pool areas, like ours). The beach is sandy, with plenty of sunbeds.
Out and about: if you're travelling with a tour company there are always the optional trips but we generally avoid them - we did do the trip over to Bodrum in Turkey though but once there, just did our own thing. We hired a car for a couple of days so we could explore the island and that proved fun and interesting. Lots of hidden sandy bays, sites of archeological interest and wonderful views when we went up into the mountains. We used the hotel shuttle bus to go down into Kardamena a couple of times but there's a local bus too and taxis are reasonable.
General: free wi-if in the lobby area. It might be good to have this throughout the complex. There are a lot of steps here, the hotel is built on several levels going down to the sea. There are ramps and there's a lift to some areas but if you have mobility problems it's perhaps not ideal. Though it does help a little in working off the food! The hotel has been planned to give the best views across the sea towards a volcanic island. If I wanted to be really picky, I'd like better quality sunbeds. But that's really the only thing I can find that could be improved on!
We always say we won't return to places - there are so many we want to visit. But, we may break that 'rule' and come back here.
Thank you again to all the staff here for making our stay so pleasant and memorable.
