“2nd visit - still love it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

Having found it too hot when we visited in early July last year, we went in mid September this year. The temperature was much more comfortable (still lovely and warm though), but of course it got dark much earlier. Like other reviewers have said, flies were out in numbers, but on the plus side we didn't see any wasps or mosquitos! We did notice the hotel seemed quieter, and getting sunbeds on the beach was less of a challenge.

I find the wide range of views on this hotel interesting, and I guess it depends upon previous experiences elsewhere and individual likes and dislikes - everyone's different of course. Perhaps I can sum it up like this - the hotel ticks our boxes because what we want is a week relaxing on the beach in the sun, swimming and snorkelling in clean and clear water, the option of activities and some entertainment in the evenings if we want it, clean and comfortable accommodation, options for lunch/dinner, and a range of food and drink of a good quality. In our view, we get all this and more at this hotel. We spoke to several English couples who had also returned for a second, third or even fourth visit, so clearly we are not alone.

Yes, some of the food in the main restaurant could be hotter, and yes one small part of the restaurant is a little akin to a canteen, but other parts (like the huge range of breads and salads) are beautifully presented with nice touches like carved fruit/vegetables. Yes, the planes go over the hotel, but the loud noise lasts seconds. The trade-off is the short transfer time!

On the beach, you get the best of both worlds. The hotel's beach has lots of rocks but these are teeming with life and therefore brilliant for snorkelling close to the shore - just wear swimming shoes to protect your feet when you enter the water. Just past the watersports, the sister hotel's beach is rock-free, with warm shallow water stretching out a long way over sand. We love the beach bar where you can get drinks, snacks, fruit, ice cream and a light lunch, and it's a lovely place to sit and relax out of the sun when you want to. The toilets there are also very handy when you're spending your days on the beach.

As I don't know how "stars" are awarded abroad, I think rather than trying to quantify whether somewhere is properly a five star, four star or whatever, I tend to consider whether the holiday was worth what we paid - did we get value for money - and the answer is a resounding yes. This is the first time we have ever gone back for a second visit to anywhere, and we would happily return for a third time, which I hope says it all.

We went with two of our friends and would agree with most of the previous comments about the hotel
We were surprised by the planes flying over head but it did not spoil our holiday in fact they drowned out the balcony singer which was not a bad thing
We all thought the hotel was 5 star but the food could be hotter in the main buffet hotel area although the choice was excellent
The staff were very friendly helpful and always had a smile
The rooms were clean spacious and tidy
We found it very relaxing with stunning views and pools
The pools are salt water but there is also a large fresh water indoor pool
We had great fun and with most holidays its what you make of it
Special mention to the best animators in the world Ania Francesca and Alessandro who really worked hard and gave their all
Still feeling the after affects from the WATER GYM !

Just returned from a nice relaxing holiday, but this hotel is no way a five star. Its a lovely hotel but needs a lot of tweeks to make it a five star.

1. you check in late at night and get left to find your room in a huge hotel... not good.

2. No where to get a drink if you check in after one, as the bar closes, only soft drinks and water in the fridge which is warm.

3. No water replenished in the fridge daily, you have to take your empty bottles down to breakfast and fill them up.

4. Only one pool bar in the whole hotel.

5. Dont bother booking the greek restaurant and the fish one as it it buffet style, no waiter service, and all the hotels we have stayed at, you get waiter service.

It was a ok holiday, but a lot of little things let this hotel down, I would rate it as an average four star, definatly not a five star. Turkey's five stars are far better.

Planes flying over don't really bother you, yes you can hear them but its not a problem.

Food in main restaurant was ok, nothing fantastic, and yes there were a few flys, you get them everywhere.

Be prepared if you are delayed coming home, (like we where), the airport is a joke, we would never return to Kos for this reason. Got to be the worst airport we have ever been to.

Room Tip: Rooms 660 had an amazing view

I returned from a holiday at this hotel in the early hours of this morning, it is a 5 star in it's appearance and service but i had rated as 4 star as it is missing a few things. You are welcomed into a grand foyer with very helpful staff, we arrived at 9.30pm the time the restaurant closed but they remained open until we had had some food. Our bags were taken to our room by the bell boy we then had to find our room ourselves from a brief explanation from the reception staff in the dark we did eventually, some rooms have entrances from the back other like ours opened through the patio doors, very pleased with room spacious fruit basket and bottle of wine, mini fridge stocked with water and soft drinks, outside we had a pool just the doors + a sea view, what more could you want. Everywhere the hotel was immaculate, pools cleaned every morning which is no mean task as there is a total of 13. The main restaurant where you can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner, a fish and greek where you can eat lunch but need to book the day before and an Italian and asian where you can eat in the evening they also need to be booked the day before both worth a go. We did not try the fish or greek as only like a snack during the day after a big breakfast. There is also a geletaria which has wonderful ice cream. It does not have a very large Beach area but you are ok to use the Porto bello beach as they are sister hotels, there is a beach taverna snacks drinks etc and a pool Bar with the same. Food is of well in my opinion a very high standard i know some will disagree, there was always so much to chose from, desserts far to many to decide which to have and fresh fruit by the bucketful waiter service for drinks and if you wanted a bottle of wine no problem. cocktails included in all inclusive there are a few drinks that you have to pay for but just ask if included when ordering. Now the missing I feel this hotel could do with a few more pool bars with so many pools and with a fair distance between each it is quite a walk sometime to get a drink snack etc. probably noticed this more because we were at the far end of the hotel, and for someone a little older this could be a problem. The entertainment was very poor a singer who did her best but every song sounded the same, you could go to the theatre next door but there was an awful smell of sewage and although the animation team tried it just did not work for us. The animation team worked hard during the day but were not pushy. This is I would say a couples hotel not a huge amount going on for children a small kids area for little ones on the beach, but older children would get bored. James the thomson rep we met the first day and then that was it. this is the only hotel we have been to when we have not had a brief leaving meeting re checking out, late check out rooms, where luggage is kept showering if late flight we had to find this out ourselves. Well you have to check out by 12.00 take you card to reception bell boy will collected your luggage and take to a room by reception you can then book a slot for a courtesy room for shower and freshen up before you leave, all inclusive continues until the moment you leave. If you want a relaxing holiday this is for you it is so quiet all except when the planes go over but you soon get used to this and it is not all day everyday thursday was the worst day i used to like seeing them go over especially in the dark when all the lights were on.

Room Tip: I was in room 671 sea view plus opened up onto a swimming pool, but most rooms are very close to a p...

We have just returned from 2 wonderful weeks at this hotel and had a fantastic time. The staff firstly get a mention as they ALL went out of their way to be helpful. If you ever had a query or question they would do their utmost to help. The hotel is lovely, rooms great, (wonderful views) and pools wonderful and quiet, and I agree that there was never an issue to get a lounger. The restaurants were brill, we visited them all at least once and the selection in the main Ambrosia restaurant was huge . ! . Watersports good, Beach and views great. The only thing I would say re the beach/sand is that we found it best to go right when you get to the beach and head up a little way and there is a lovely stretch of accessible sea. The planes were not an issue, probably one an hour but we enjoyed it and used to comment that someone else was about to start their holidays, re the time for them to fly over , I actually counted the plane passing as someone else had commented they had to stop talking for 10 minutes while the plane passed over--- 5 seconds !!! and you didnt have to stop talking. Lastly I have to say that i scoured all the reviews on trip advisor before booking my holiday at this hotel and I am really glad that the positive reviews swayed me to take the plunge as we had a FANTASTIC time and hope to return. Thank you to all the staff.

Room Tip: 611 has view over the Italian restaurant and pool and to the left you have Nisyros and the sea also...

I have just come back from staying at the Portobello hotel. Let me start by saying that this review is based upon my own experiance - others may differ. However, I will look to give you some idea of the hotel etc.
It is difficult to see how the hotel is given a 5 star rating - I think that the attention to detail is not there as compared to the Imperial Princess in Rhodes which is from the same Atlantica chain of hotels, which is also classed as a five star.
We arrived at 10.30pm - check in was very good BUT we had to try and find our hotel room in the dark, no real directions etc. We were in the last bloke of rooms right at the bottom of the hotel and so it took us ages. It was downhill all the way mind and so not too bad. The room was OK, nothing special for a delux room for sure but clean, tidy and had a great view. Not much more that we wanted other than the fact the shower was ridiculous, very small - you basically had to show in installments!
Having arrived late we looked for some food - nothing was about. We were told that rolls would be at the pool bar at 11.30 - none arrived so we went to bed starving.

The food at the hotel was generally very good - the buffet always had a massive choice, the staff were very attentive and of course the el fresco dinning was excellent. We tried the fish and Greek restaurant which are open at lunch times - these were not great. We also went to the Asian restaurant one evening - this was very good. There is an Italian but everybody told us it was rubbish so we just did not bother.

The swimming pool outside our room was clean but cold and all the pools are saltwater. Our pool also had an added extra in that the paint would come off on your feet, arms body etc. Apparently the hotel know that they have a problem and so did the rep but neither told anyone!

Sadly the biggest issue were the planes. It is incredible that not many people seem to talk about them. Everyday morning afternoon and night they are flying right over the top of the hotel. We are not talking about just a few - we are talking minimum of 30 and maximum 120!!! When you go away you want to relax - having jumbo jets flying over you on a regular basis is not great fun - they were only 1000 meters above the hotel - so low you could see the people in them!

Before I finish I need to mention the entertainment - I will be kind and so it was rubbish. It must be hard to try and entertain people when the hotel is set out in such a disjointed way - it is true that they do have 14 pools and the beach but that just means that everyone is spreadout so trying to establish any entertainment during the day is difficult and then after one show in the evening in an arena that was built before christ you just dont bother.

In summary - a nice hotel, very clean, excellent staff, it isnot a five star but that does not matter it is well worth going to as long as you can put up with the planes!!

My husband and I have just returned from one week at the Porto Bello Royal. We normally go on 4 star holidays (apart from Sensatori Tenerife at Christmas (5 star+)). Our overall opinion is that this hotel compared to the ones we have stayed at in the Caneries/Balearics is that this is 3.5 stars.

Hotel/Pool - this is the highlight as it is beautiful. There are approx 12 pools, no sunbed issues and it is like having a pool to yourself. It's very quiet and peaceful. The pools are saltwater and are a bit cool but the weather was so hot that it was a welcomed relief. There was water aerobics, stretching and step aerobics around the pool during the day if you want to join in. It is on the flight path but for us this was not an issue.. and there are no more than 15 planes that go over during the daytime.

Rooms - They are OK but not what I would class 5 star. They are just basic and a bit out dated.

Restaurants - This was such a let down. The main restaurant is all buffet and I agree with the comments on another review which compares is to a school canteen. However the most disgusting thing are the flies that fly around and sit on the food. There is no element of control over preventing this. It totally puts you off your food! We also ate in the greek taverna but again we had the same fly issues. We ate in the Italian restuarant one night and that was really nice. It is waitress service and no flies... and to be honest it was the only meal that that we really enjoyed!

Bars - The beach bar is again disgusting. We drank half of our drinks and left as they flies were there again.
The pool bar is OK but the service was slow due to under-staffing. (no offence against the staff as they were all lovely). However we arrived at 10.30pm and told that the only food available were sandwiches at 11.30pm at the pool bar. The only way to describe them were basic ham/cheese sandwiches on dried out bread. Not a great first impression.
The hotel bar is fine and the hotel bar staff are really friendly.

Entertainment - We didn't attend any of the evening entertainment apart from the singer at the hotel bar. She isn't the greatest but at least it puts a bit of atmosphere in the hotel in the evening.

Location - It is 15 minutes from the airport, brilliant! However it is about a 45 minute walk into Kardemena (though you can catch the bus from the hotel into the town centre). Kardemena itself is very run down. It has the typical tourists shops however there are a lot of empty shops and it is sad to see that the town is quite run down.

Overall, the hotel is lovely, the sun was shining, and it was a week off work... however, I wouldn't return to this hotel as for the price we paid, it didn't live up to the expectation. The hotel has a brilliant setting but it has to increase its standards, especially around the food. That alone is enough to put you off this hotel.

The final saving grace were the two crazy Geordie's we met who turned a disappointing holiday into a brilliant week with lots of laughter.
