“Lovely holiday after a bad start”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013 via mobile

My boyfriend and I enjoyed the first week of September at summer palace. The holiday was lovely, however we did have a few problems.

We arrived about 9.30pm to be greeted by reception staff who told us we had to get into the restaurant to catch dinner before it closed. We were really rushed and her instructions were not very clear which was not appreciated after a long journey. We were pointed through to the emptt restaurant where staff clearly weren't expecting us and were desperate to close up. There was very limited food left and due to the rush we weren't feeling very welcome eating there. Not a good start. The hotel needs to cater for people who are arriving later. Our first impression of staff, particularly reception staff was awful.

We were then advised that our room was not sea view as requested. The room was fine but the location was terrible, directly above reception with a view of the road. We asked to be moved and were told there was no possibility until Saturday as the hotel was full. We reluctantly accepted this only to have a night of no sleep at all due to banging around the corridors next to our room, people's voices and cars/trucks/motorbikes pulling up outside reception from approx 5am (deliveries etc). At 8am we went back to reception to complain (again). We were told to come back to meet with the reservations manager at 10.30am. The supposed manager was a sour faced woman with zero customer service skills. She simply could not be bothered and had a terrible attitude, responding to my complaint about the lack of sleep due to noise by telling me that other people don't complain. We eventually did move to a sea view room (they miraculously found one in the "full" hotel!) but at no point did we receive an apology for our inconvenience. When I told her this she just shrugged.

Anyway... Despite the bad start and poor customer service we had a lovely holiday. Resort is really nice. Food quite repetitive but fine. I would Recommend Italian restaurant. On the second to last night my boyfriend got a sickness bug which must have been from meat he ate off the grill in main restaurant (only thing that he ate that I didn't). The bug wiped him out for 24hours which was not good.

Bar set up was not accommodating for big groups and definitely not enough space for everyone to sit outside. Entertainment is none existent but we met lots of nice couples so we all made our own entertainment! Staff in restaurant and bars work hard and were always friendly.

As stated by lots of other people the Russian guests were incredibly rude and seemed totally miserable. This didn't bother us particularly, we commented that it must be awful to be that miserable all the time!!

Kos is a lovely island and mitsis complex is great with lovely beach/pools. The best selling point has to be the view which is outstanding.

Overall lovely holiday in a good hotel. Sort the reservations manager out and it would be a great hotel!!

After staying at the hotel last year for a week and really having a great time, we decided to try two weeks this year, but we got off to a bad start when ourselves and and about half of our coach were told there was no rooms for us because of a flood, we were put into the Norida Beach, this must have have been the furthest room away from the hotel that they could find, they did manage to get us a room the next day after 2pm a total waste of a day and a great start to our holiday, they did try to compensate us with black bands for the other hotels and filling the mini bar every day, which is something you don't need staying in an all inclusive, anyway after all that the holiday itself was just ok, This year we noticed there was a lot more British which was not a bad thing as you had some people to talk to instead of the grunts from our Russian friends.
The staff all work really hard, the rooms are not bad but could be a lot better, it would help if you could turn the air conditioning off without taking the key fob out and all the lights going off.
I would like to mention Elina who work's at the nautalaus bar she never stops she seems to be able to speak every language, always has time to speak to everyone who comes to the bar and always has a smile on her face.

The best animators, they are funny, firendly, helpful, they are perfect. Gaming is always enough, leisure very active, volleyball, darts, handball, and even all kinds of endless entertainment. Animators are awesome :)

If you look through the reviews from Summer Palace, it never ceases to amaze at the variety of comments, how one person can rate it the best hotel in Kos, whilst others warn you to stay well clear. I guess its how your own perception of a 5 star hotel (in Greece!) is going to be. The Greeks have always been, shall we say, generous, with their stars! From the recent complaint from another holidaymaker that the rooms lacked bidets and the waiters spoke little English, then I'm sorry, but they're really going to struggle to tick all the boxes in Greece.
Our own Greek experience is of self catering, so we're probably at the opposite end of the spectrum, highlighted in the delight that the rooms had hot running water! The whole complex merges with Blue Domes, Norida Beach and Family Village, creating a small town, right at the very end of the Kardemena coast.
We stayed at the Summer Palace at the end of August and arrived at the hotel close to midnight and was then faced with the fact that all the bars shut at midnight so by the time we got back to the Reception there was no opportunity for any drinks. This is one area that needs improving. As is the fact that rooms have no tea / coffee making facilities. I'm guessing that as drinks are on tap at the bar, then they assume that all holidaymakers will just walk down when they want a drink....they obviously haven't worked out the English desire for a morning cuppa?
Anyway, back to rooms. They are without doubt some of the best we have seen in any Greek complex. Add on a sea view and they are simple stunning. We paid extra for a sea view but the vast majority seemed to be looking out to Nissyros volcano only a couple of miles over the water and we wondered if that premium had been a wasted one? The rooms are cleaned every day, with an abundance of towels, handy as each set of apartments has its own pool right in front of them. As many have highlighted, these are salt cleansed, but we never found this to be a problem. Add on to your near personal pool, the indoor one and the scenic outdoors one then you're not doing to spend much of your holiday dry!
The restaurant timings seemed early to us (lazy Brits?) with breakfasts starting at 07:00, running until 10:30, lunch from 12:00-2:30 and then evening meal from 6:30 to 9:30. We soon found out that if you attempted to gain entry near the end of a session then waiters would be clearing up, but if you made sure you're sat down at least half an hour before the end, then you will be treated to a banqueting feast. We couldn't understand how people could complain about the lack of variety at meals, there seemed to be so much that even granted the fact that many areas of the meal would be the same from day to day, the shear volume and variety meant that we were able to easily have different meals each time. The added bonus is that the cakes / pastries are absolutely delicious..and even available at breakfast :-) The waiters and waitresses deserve every praise they get, making sure that you're treated well. Ok, they speak little English, but if you take the time, effort and courtesy to learn a few basic Greek words / phrases then it will be certainly appreciated.
Drinks were slightly disappointing. We're not big drinkers, but no Mythos (which seemed to have disappeared from the whole island now?) and Alfa was the only draught beer, whilst the kids soon steered clear of the cola, which seemed to be a flat syrup!
Of course the other problem highlighted by everyone is the foreigners!! Us British are such a multi-cultural welcoming group aren't we? There seemed to be more Germans than Russians whilst we were there. Most of the German children did seem a little like Augustus Gloop whilst in the restaurant and I have to agree that the Russians don't seem to have caught up with the western culture of queuing? I can understand whilst it may annoy many, but watching them simply barge to the front at the Reception I found rather perversely entertaining!
If it all gets too much, there's the option of upgrading to be able to use all facilities, including Blue Domes, for 45 Euros for a family of four, for three days. We did have a sneeky look in Blue Domes and whilst its undoubtedly got the wow factor, the bar looked a bit too much like an episode of TOWIE for my liking and thought that me and my kids in Primark 3/4's and flip flops didn't really blend in.
The beach is also not the best, shingly and steep it's not really suitable for families with small children, though that shingle does make the water absolutely crystal clear, giving some of the best snorkeling in the area. If only the whole complex had been built next to Paradise beach (a 35 euro taxi away) then I'd probably not be writing this now, but serving the Alfa and flat cola to Russians!
Whilst the remoteness was perfection for us, seeking a bit of tranquility, (by midnight the whole complex was peaceful, with us playing Gin Rummy on the balcony seemingly the noisiest pastime) I can imagine the shock if you booked expecting to be able to walk down to the clubs of Kardemena, which is an 8 minute and 10 euro taxi drive away.
So there we have it, I've still moaned about this and that, but it really is a fantastic place. We will definitely be returning. I guess it just depends on what your own expectations are?

When we arrived at 10pm our first impressions of the hotel were very good..We were shown to our room with our 6 year old daughter by a lovely friendly guy and were delighted. I had particularly asked for a ground floor room by email before leaving the UK after reading about the courtyard accommodation with the quiet shared pools. A lady called Maria was very quick to respond telling me she would do her best to put us in one of these and she did! Rooms are not Uk 5 star by any means but were absolutely spotless, comfortable and from our front window we had a beautiful sea view and the back window with lovely blue shutters opened up a meter or so away from a large pool which all week never had more than 4 or 5 people in it at one time mostly from the courtyard accommodation.

The whole place is spotlessly clean and very well maintained, the gardens are beautiful and the pink flowers that cover most of the buildings are just stunning, the grass is green and maintained with sprinklers. The pools are impressive, the slides at the water park are brilliant, we had hours of fun there with our daughter.

The food is nice, apart from the lunch time salads and soups and fresh fish nothing spectacular, although if you book the Greek and Italian restaurants it makes a pleasant change.... Book early 8 am the day before to get a reservation though! The main restaurant staff are very hard working and can't do enough for you. The two guys serving drinks at the beach bar are great and make amazing cocktails.

Top Marks for Mark the entertainment guy who tirelessly works with a genuinely happy smile on his face all day and evening trying to keep everyone happy...He does a great job at the water aerobics in the sea and seems to be a very good team leader with the rest of the entertainment people as he really does stand out....

Snorkelling is fabulous and you can actually sit in the shallow water and feed the fish bread, they take it out your hands, it's pretty amazing.

It did make our holiday extra special that we met such lovely people (Jo,Paul, Dave & kids...you know who you are!)

So lastly my only complaint would be the complete and utter rudeness and arrogance of some of the Russian tourists..Not only did they push in the food queues, Never ever say please or thank you, blatantly ignore you and never seemed to smile at anyone except each other....without going into too much detail we had a couple of unpleasant incidences involving being shouted at by them for ridiculous reasons.

All in all most people wouldn't have paid 5 star prices so their expectations shouldn't be too high...Think 4 star maybe and you won be disappointed.

My girlfriend and I booked an all inclusive holiday through lastminute.com for six nights in the beginning of June 2013 having checked out the hotel on tripadvisor and considered its five star rating.

Our check-in was relatively smooth except we were surprised to have to pay for the non-standard option of a safe, which we consider to be among the usual amenities provided by good hotels. Thankfully they did not surcharge us for doors, windows or a toilet seat

The safe, which cost about € 20 for the stay proved to be quite old and could only be opened with a large iron key. Electronic keypads/PINs anyone? Furthermore it was small and bolted into the bottom of a cupboard. Don't bother bringing laptops. They would not fit into the safe and anyway the wifi connection was too slow and only accessible in elusive, dynamic spots in the reception areas.

On a positive note, the hotel and rooms were very clean. The room was also spacious and had a great view from the balcony. Aficionados of two hard single beds pushed together would be in their elements. The same for those who require ambient plumbing noises such as whooshes and clanking in order to get to sleep. No need for a resident poltergeist.

For those interested in TV, the rooms had ancient CRT boxes with just a few channels. Please don´t consider getting ill. The hotel doctor would have cost € 90. Far better to go into town.

One of our main gripes was that the food was of poor quality and choice and we were surprised that other guests had not highlighted this before. Other similar priced hotels in Greece and Turkey have provided much better all inclusive experiences. By way of example, the breakfast buffet displayed cheap processed ham and cheese. Not much in the way of fruit. Plenty of white-bread and fries for those experiencing shortages at home and the yoghurts had delightful day-glo hues. Despite the hotel being next to the sea, the á la carte seafood pizzas were not garnished with fresh mussels and prawns.

Drinks were very basic as well in both quality and choice and as a result of the poor dining experiences we found ourselves drawn to the more appealing tavernas in Kardemena.

The hotel pool was good and enjoyable to swim in with the water at a good temperature. As already mentioned by some reviewers hotel steps could be an issue for those unfit. The beach water was clear, however, the drinks bar was often too busy. Music was also played very loudly from the hotel´s boom boxes and far from relaxing.

The hotel is definitely neither five nor four star, three at best, in considerable need of updating and we will not be returning.

All the rooms have an excellent view, the accommodation was very clean and comfortable, but I suggest you ask for any requirements to suit you. This is my seventh visit to this hotel, however, I have used the Mitsis hotels all over Greece, but this is may favourite. Clean bed linen and towels everyday and the most helpful and friendly staff, who go out of their way to help you. The food was varied and a big selection of everything was available. The water aerobics on the beach was excellent and also the cleanliness of the pools and these are checked on a regular basis throughout the day, I felt this was just as important as having a clean room etc, with all the pools used on a daily basis and all the people I talked to felt the same especially with children. Watersports were good and also the various trips available around the island

Room Tip: All the rooms have an excellent view, the accommodation was very clean and comfortable, but I sugges...
