“Wow... Fabulous views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

Stayed at Summer Palace from 14- 27 June 2013
From reading previous reviews we understood that the hotel was built on a hillside which could involve walking up some steep slopes to reach your room. Well we were lucky enough to have one of the rooms at the very top of the hotel and boy was it worth it. The views were stunning and you could see the whole of the coastline all the way down to Kardemema. The room was large, clean and bright with maid service every day. There is a fridge filled with soft drinks, beer and water every second day. There is a buggy that will give u a lift to and from your room should you need it which I have never seen before in hotels that are situated on hills. There is no charge and I never felt that the staff driving expected a tip.
I have never seen so many pools in a hotel and for the whole two weeks we never failed at any time of day to find a sun bed around the pools or on the beach. The cleanliness of the hotel is second to none.
Food was good and always able to find something to enjoy. Huge choice of salads. Toni the chef a great guy and very entertaining. Well worth giving the Italian and Greek restaurants a try.
Yes there were lots of Russians and I don’t disagree with some of the reviews but this has been the case in several of my last holidays in different countries. We are all entitled to have a holiday surely.
We really did have a fab holiday and received fantastic service with a smile from all staff there especially Dimitrios who went out of his way to make our holiday special. Nothing was too much trouble for him. We will return to the Summer Palace in the future.

Room Tip: room 391 has the best views

We arrived very late on the Tuesday evening and the staff we very good and helped us to our rooms. The rooms are very basic and would only consider them to be a 3*, the location was not ideal with a one year old as we had to go up and down several flights of stairs with no lift. The food wasnt good, my husband, mother in law and my daughter were very ill with tummy upsets which went on for days, this ruined the holiday for us and we ended up eating out most nights. There is some nice restaurants in kardemena so at least we could have a nice meal. We felt very much a minority here being British, as the hotel is over run by Russians who can be very rude. We did upgrade to black bands so we could use the other hotels but this did not include the blue domes which we were quite disappointed with. The norida is much better for food than the summer palace. The cleaning staff are amazing, they are very friendly and keep everything clean and tidy but apart from that we did not enjoy our stay at all. Very disappointing

Not a place for families with children. Must say it was a nightmare with our buggy and 2 small children. Steps everywhere and slopes galore. You can use steep slope and steps to beach or take two lifts and then another 20 steps then slope down to beach.

There is nothing to do of an evening except sit in reception where the only bar after 6pm is. Found the Russian guests don't know how to que but you get used to it.

Major plus are the staff Thomas and his team in the restaurant are fantastic especially Daria who welcomed us with a smile constantly and was great with the kids. Food is good just same thing everyday for 11 nights.

Rooms are nice and clean in fact whole hotel is immaculately clean

Not the worst place in the world 3 star not 5 star but I can't think of anyone I would recommend to visit summer palace.

Our 4th Mitsis hotel, and, unfortunately, not as good as the others. It's main problem is it's location, set in a hillside, means there are steps and slopes everywhere, plus a two lift system to get to the beach. There are 4 hotels on the Mitsis Village site, but Summer Palace is the highest, so if you want to go to the others, you climb a hill, then down another, then up another if you want to get to the only hotel worth going to - the Blue Domes. Not so bad going, but coming back is a nightmare. It is very telling that there are chauffeured golf buggies to ferry you around when necessary. The food was typical AI, very repetitive and not always very warm. The Grill Chefs were friendly, but cooked the same thing every night. Waiting staff were mostly friendly, as were reception and bar staff.

When we arrived we were given a room with a lovely sea view, but unfortunately it was next to the terrace of the bar, and our bed backed onto the entertainment stage - lovely. We asked to be moved, and we were moved to a room with a side sea view two days later, so bit of an unsettled start.

There are 5 or 6 pools doted around the Summer Palace site, and these were generally nice and quiet - the main pool by the Italian Restaurant was very claustrophobic. The Reception/Main Bar area is a nightmare, as it is the main Wi-Fi area, so you get the usual herd of screen-huggers sitting around, letting their kids run wild. The noise levels are horrendous as it is a double-height area incorporating an indoor swimming pool and entertainment area, so you often get different music/sound from the floor below, while the bar music is blasting away in competition. If you have a room in the main building this is awful as the sound carries throughout until about midnight.

The issue with Eastern Europeans is a normal one - if you are English you will feel in a minority - but they have as much right to be there as we have, and the Greeks need all the tourists they can get. Personally, I find that if you show them you have manners they will respect that, and if you try to talk to them, English allowing, they will respond cheerfully. I think sometimes they lack confidence in their language skills which comes across as rudeness. We met some lovely Norwegian and Dutch people who can always speak great English.

The beach is small pebbles (no sand), and quite a steep drop into the sea. It is extremely busy in the mornings, you will not get a sunbed after 10.00 a.m. But, for some reason, it empties out around 12.30 and you get the pick of the sunbeds. I think other nationalities must have siesta after lunch, because they don't come back until 4.30ish.

The Italian Restaurnt and Taverna are worth a couple of visits, but their menus are always the same, and personally, think there is too much food for lunch in the Taverna.

We stayed from 27 June - 11 July - very hot, nice and windy some of the time, but it was too long in one place. Kardamena is not very nice - pretty much run down and for young folk. Kos town was well worth the visit - so historic.

So, to summarise, not the best holiday we have had, but we have been going abroad for around 40 years, so some you win, some you lose - rated 5/10 for the whole holiday. Might change from Mitsis now to another chain.

Room Tip: Avoid the main building, especially below the restaurant due to the noise of cleaners in the early m...

Very clean hotel, friendly, helpful staff, especially in the dining room; Daria, who greeted us for every meal, and Thomas and Dimitris, who made sure we had a table overlooking the sea each time. It's a big hotel, spread over a large site on a hill, so lots of steep climbs, but the views make it worth it. Some of the blocks of accommodation have their own "private" pool, and our 2nd floor room had a ladder leading from our balcony straight into our pool. There are several other pools, so always somewhere different to sit. The beach is a bit disappointing, as the sunbeds and parasols are all very close together, and the "sand" is more like grit. 70% of the guests were Russian; they can be a bit pushy, and not at all friendly, but we did meet a few other British guests. I'd say this hotel is great for families and couples - if you're looking for night life, you need to go into Kardemena, as this hotel is part of a complex of about 5 hotels a couple of miles out of town. The buses are not very frequent.
The wind, which was present most days, kept the temperature very pleasant.
Food was ok, not excellent, but we could always find something we liked. All drinks were included, and were not limited to local spirits. Nice cocktails in the main bar! Tea and coffee available all day too. For a bit more luxury, the Mitsis Blue Domes, on the same site, offers a beautiful spa, and from what we saw is a superior hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room up the hill from main reception

We arrived late in the evening to be told we would only be on our room for one night as a much better one was available but not until the following day. We were tired from travellling did not want to make a scene so accepted this. Thankfully we did get to move the next day as the room situated above reception was noisy and sounded like there was a wind tunnel situated through the centre throughout the whole night. Our new room was mush better located, next to the Italian restaurant, near the pool and with a great sea view. There was no apology from reception for the inconveneince when I queried the delay later...I was infact told they were doing us a huge favour as we had booked the room above reception. Really....???
The hotel was spotlessly clean, with plenty of staff cleaning continuously, to the point that if you were sitting in the lobby the cleaner would come and give you a look ( No asking ) to lift your feet so that she could mop with her bleach infused mop under your feet. Surely this could have been done when we were all in bed.
The rooms are ok pretty basic, more 3*. The fridges only work whern you're in the room as your key keeps the power going so you always have warm drinks. The TV's have one BBC English talking channel, and even thats fuzzy. The double bed was 2 singles pushed together and matresses that were very old with lumps and bumps everywhere. The Air con however was good so you could keep cool overnight if that any consolation.
The restaurant was very hot so you have to sit outside for some air, and of all of the staff throughout the hotel the best ones are situated here. Darina, Thomas and the Grill chef were extremely helpful to assist. During my stay I became very ill on Night 3 of 7, which I suspected was Acute Food poisoning. I spent the whole night throwing up, to the point it was so severe I burst a blood vessel in my eye. This was then followed by a further 5 days of Gastroenteritis which really spoiled my entire holiday. I would go to the bar and retaurant with my boyfriend for meals and sit and nibble on a piece of bread, accompanied by the bottled water that I had to pay for as this was not included. So despite not being able to eat properly or drink alcohol for 5 days I still had to buy bottled water. The restaurant staff were very sympathetic offering to make me special meals but I had no appetite until my final day when I allowed them to make me some Chicken broth.( The best meal I experinced whilst here ) Reception were not interested in anything you had to say to them, only saying I could call a doctor out for 90 Euros, plus then i'd have to pay to go to Kardemana and pay for any prescriptions also. The local rep suggested they were a rip off and there was a really good pharmacy in the town plus a walk in mediacl centre that did proper English speaking consultations for 30-40 Euros.
We also experienced one night of Power cuts in the hotel when we were in the Lobby one night. It was pitch black, and people were using their phones as torches to get around. There was clealry no contingency plan for this, it was terrible and lasted for almost an hour. When I later saw the manager I suggested they buy some battery powered torches for such events, to be told it wasnt down to him but Head office ! But clearly its ok for Children and elderly people to not see where they are going. There was no communication or announcements to notify us of anything so just say there in the dark.
There was no entertainment for the adults whatsover, although some peolle paid extra for black bands to use the other neighbouring hotels which we heard were better.
This hotel has a long way to go to live up to what they sell. We read the mixed reviews on here before we left and were concerned. All in all, it has a great location, its clean and its ideal for a peacful break. But if you're looking for the usual combination package go elsewhere.

Room Tip: Do not accept a room over reception, and if you have your booking papers show them you have not requ...
