My daughter and I have just returned from a holiday at Bitzaro Palace Hotel, Kalamaki.
Having read previous reviews, which were mixed, we were very pleasantly surprised by this hotel. On arrival we found staff to be extremely pleasant and helpful. The hotel is a little set back from the main strip, and it is a short walk to the beach, but neither of those things spoiled the holiday in the slightest.
The room was very clean and fresh and appeared to have been recently decorated. The beds are typical Greek style and therefore not as soft as travellers may have at home, however we had no problems enjoying good nights sleep.
Th pool area is clean and well presented, with a large shady sitting area with tables and parasols for respite from the heat. There are ample sunbeds, but we did notice as the hotel filled up, so did the sun beds very quickly!
The restaurant appears to have been recently refurbished and is in a very soothing shade of green with complimenting olive based decoration. By far the most striking thing about this restaurant however is the food. We simply cannot understand previous comments regarding lack of choice! Daily, there was every conceivable option for breakfast, including continental style, full English with bacon, sausage, tomatoes, several types of egg dishes, baked beans, fruit, cereals, bread products including French pastries and a selection of home cooked biscuits. No sooner had you digested breakfast, it was time for lunch. Every day there was an excellent selection of food available at lunchtime, and if you had room, you could have a 3 course lunch. Dinner was an experience in itself. Drink order is taken at your table and delivered to you. Next you are visited by George, the soup guy, with a very grand ceremonial presentation of his soup terrine. Should you decide to partake of the soup, you are rewarded with a beaming smile as if you have just given him a winning lottery ticket! Then (if you are really going for it) its off to the salad bar where you will discover a huge range of salad options which are different daily and fresh as can be. Next it's on to the main course, where once again the choice is huge with several meat options, a fish option, vegetarian option and a selection of side dishes. All are well cooked and well seasoned and flavoursome. There is a choice of three deserts and a full selection of ice cream and then, assuming you have any room left at all, there is a selection of fresh fruit available!
We found all of the hotel staff to be friendly and extremely helpful.
In terms of excursions, we would highly recommend the Jeep Safari. The 'off road' bits are an experience in themselves, and you also get to see the 'off the beaten track' places on the island. By far the best excursion we went on was a turtle spotting trip with Cruisemar (www.cruisemar.com). The boat is fabulous and the crew (owners) could not have been more helpful. I made an enquiry via their website as I have some walking difficulties and I wanted to know about accessibility. One of the owners, Nassos, rang me and explained that they would assist me onto the boat. He then arranged for us to be picked up at our hotel (at no extra cost) and delivered to the boat and to be retuned to the hotel after the trip. The cruise itself was a fantastic experience, and we did indeed see a turtle.
All in all, a fantastic holiday, and one which we would recommend to anyone.
