“Sun, Sea, Sand, Turtles and Earthquakes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2011

Very smart modern frontage with typical Greek apartments and a lovely swimming pool at the rear. Situated 200m to the beach and close to the very best restaurants.

We were lucky and were given a large aprtment overlooking the main street, above the supermarket, and whilst we got very little traffic noise the smell from the restaurant extractor fans was most unpleasant.

Angelique on reception was very helpful and Maria and Vanna in the poolside bar were amazing. maria makes the best ever milk shakes and Vanna the best cheese omelette in the world; it comes with salad and fries and is huge - all for 4 euros.

Best restaurants: Hera, complimentary wine and small greek dessert of apple, honey and cinammon. I can highly reccomend the Kleftiko.

Zorbas, by the Crystal beach hotel is good. Excellent service, romantic sunset views over the sea. Highly reccommend the prawn cocktail, Moussaka and Greek Roast Chicken.

Crystal Beach hotel is a lovely spot to get out of the sun, enjoy a drink and look down on the beach.

Best Buys: Antibiotics, available over the counter form the pharmacy 5.5 euros, cotton, turtle print saroong 5 euros and fake designer sun glasses 3 euros.

Best trip: One hour boat trip around Laganas bay turtle spotting. So many turtles and it was truly amazing 7.50 euros.

Worst trip: Train ride, uncomfortable and boring. Were not allowed to get off and see the olive tres or earthquake ruins of 1953 and then had a stop over at a olive ooil processing plant :(

If you do the full day boat tour this is not really suitable fo children that get bored easily. Good though if you are a strong swimmer as there are plenty of opportunites to get off the boat and swim.

This was our first visit to Kalamaki and despite 3 earthquakes in one day (one measuring 4.8 on the rictor scale) we will definitely be back. Probably with the grand children.

Totally relaxing,I came back totally chilled out and was just what we needed. LOVED IT.

this is second time in Cavo doro,it's very nice hotel and people are kind. Eather you are traveling with your partner or with kids you will be pleased. Rooms are clean, mostly big and comfortable. There is one thing that am not saticefied-you have to buy your own soap and toilet paper. It's not a big thing but I dont think that there is need for that kind of stuff because the price is not that low. If you pay for breakfast you will get same meal every morning with some small changes. So if you dont have very big expectations you will be satisfied. They have very good personel too.

Room Tip: always take room upstairs

Afetr reading mixed reviews on here, we were a little apprehensive, however, many of our fears were unfounded. The room was on the small side, which didn't really bother us, after all, how much time do you really spend in your room on holiday? We were on the ground floor, and occasionally could smell the drains, although not in the apartment. We had the feeling of being "in the basement" on our terrace, which we didn't use, due to having no sun at any time of the day.
We found the pool to be clean, and maybe due to the time of year we travelled, no screaming kids, which was great! Pool bar is reasonable and good quality.
We had a few drinks in the hotel bar which is nice, but spent most nights in the Oceanic (amazing bar, Kev is a great host). Would definately recommend this bar, you have to try his "Jackhammer" cocktail, my fella lived off them!

Overall, we had a great holiday, basic hotel, but this did not detract from our experience, and we would stay there again as had a great location.

My husband and I returned from cavo on 16th Sept. Atfter reading several negative review on Cavo D'oro we were a wee bit anxious, but we usually pay little heed to bad reviews, as visiting Greek islands regularly we know what to expect we were very wrong on his occasion! The pool was very cloudy and appeared dirty to us(other guests commented also) so much so you cannot see the bottom of the pool. There are 120 rooms so this is a large turnover of guests expected to use this pool. Also pool area was over crammed with sunbeds so relaxation was the last thing you could expect. On discussing the pool with the rep,she stated management confirmed there was regular cleaning of the pool. Clearly a lie!. We could not and did not use it all but once and couldnt wait to get out..

There was also a permanent stench of drains, even during the night.
Unlike other reviewers we had a large clean room, however thats where it ends. On the way up the stairs there were crates of empty bottles gathering muck throughout our fortnight, on the other side broken bedframes and other garbage. Our balcony was a lovely suntrap, however over the roof of the shop and if bored you could view the tin can, spoon, discarded socks and football top. Our showr had no hot watef or most of the2 week (sinks produced hot water) On reporting FOUR times we were ignored and communication was nil until we made an official complaint, shower replaced on our last full day. Imagine the annoyance at returning from days at the beach covered in sand and oil!!!

All this said, Kalamaki is amazing ,relaxing, fab food,(zepos,....lamb kleftiko. buon amici) beautiful people. A walk along the beach to laganas, long but beautiful, loggerhead turtles...we seen TWO.

We WILL go again next year to Kalamaki and didnt get enough of it, however we will never go near Cavo Do'oro again.

Please bear i mind that there is a new modern reception/front and that is EXACTLY what it is ALL FRONT,FACADE and no substance!!!

We were in an apartment which we paid £160 to upgrade to.The room was on the ground floor looking onto a small garden which was shared by the other apartments. The apartment was ok but the toilet was terrible! The drains stunk and when the maid left the shower mat over it and was soaking with a terrible stench.Maids were great and got clean towels etc.We had a very noisey family that shouted and slammed doors and ran in and out of each others apartments so no sleep b4 you went out at night or relaxing time in the garden. We asked to be moved but decided not to as other rooms were next to or above them and wouldnt have made much difference.Thank god they didnt get up early!!
The pool area is small so you cant get away from the noise of kids in the pool(i have a child, but tell him to play quietly and not scream as overs want to relax etc).We went to other pools as did other guests as so noisey with screaming kids.(not the hotels fault).
The food at the pool bar is great and the girl who served us was very friendly. We didnt use the hotel bar as drunk in the Oceanic which was great.
We had great fun with all the kittens as there were LOADS of them .

Really enjoyed our stay in Kalamaki,Resort is very quiet and easy going ,which was just what we wanted.Studio was very small but that didn't really bother us ,we spent most of our 2week stay either around the pool,on the gorgeous beach ,which is great for kids.Easy to get around the rest of the island ,taxis and buses are cheep and easy to use ,Angelina and her family in the supermarket are lovely and so helpful ,lots of great places to eat in Kalamaki and definately recommend doing a tour around the island ,we booked ours for about 12 euros ,worth looking around for best prices ,We had awful flight times but reception staff were very helpful .Great hols, booked for 2011 already .

A very warm welcome from everyone at the Cavo D'oro. This is a message for anyone who is looking at booking the Cavo D'oro hotel in the future or who have recently booked witha tour operator. This year the rooms and the Pool Bar at the Cavo D'oro have been renovated and the bar area has been transformed into a funky and modern place to enjoy a pint or one of Richy's delicious Cocktails. This is definatly the most stylish bar in old Kalamaki and one of the only places with SKY TV to watch all the major sporting events.
The reception has also been fully renovated with a stylish touch and the welcoming reception staff Yianna and Matina are always here to help you.
Everyone and anyone is welcome at the Cavo D'oro and if you are an existing guest we look forward to seeing you again soon or if yo are staying at another hotel then feel free to pop in and have a drink.
